It’s a Short Trip From “I Won” To “I Screwed Up”

Where's the handle on this thing?

The great baseball writer Bill James once opined, only partly tongue in cheek, that the one among the Lord’s divine duties that He really seemed to enjoy was punishing arrogance and hubris. Certainly history tells us that the Oval Office has served up a steaming plate of humble pie to many better men than Barack Obama over the years, and now it’s his turn. Recall the swagger of Obama as recently as January 23:

As the president, he had told Kyl after the Arizonan raised objections to the notion of a tax credit for people who don’t pay income taxes, Obama told Cantor this morning that “on some of these issues we’re just going to have ideological differences.”

The president added, “I won. So I think on that one, I trump you.”

To this, just eleven days later:

President Barack Obama on Tuesday abruptly abandoned his nomination fight for Tom Daschle and a second major appointee who failed to pay all their taxes, telling NBC News: “I screwed up.”

“I’ve got to own up to my mistake. Ultimately, it’s important for this administration to send a message that there aren’t two sets of rules — you know, one for prominent people and one for ordinary folks who have to pay their taxes,” Obama said on NBC’s “Nightly News with Brian Williams.”

It’s a little late for that last one, of course. More lessons will undoubtedly be on the way. Unfortunately for Obama, every day is not Inauguration Day.

Ben Domenech has more detailed thoughts on this point.

He should have asked Pres. Obama if there really aren’t two sets of rules why is Timothy Geithner still Treasury Sect.?

would have the stones to get in his face and ask THAT question?

      Seems very un-presidential to me.

Shouldn’t he have something more important to do?

You know, one thing the Obama crowd did always manage to do well was stagecraft….but I think they’re even losing their touch at that.

I’m watching CNBC, as BO announces the new limits they’ve conjured up on the salaries of bank CEO’s (part of the Democrat party’s “bonus derangement syndrome”) . And who does he have as his sidekick to announce these profound, momentous changes?

Yep….his resident tax cheat, Tim Geithner. Of course, when you cheat on your taxes, you’ve kind of desinged your own bonus, don’t ya think?

Unbelievable that the day after the fall of Daschle and the other nominee, Obama would make Tim Geithner the poster boy for punishing Wall Street CEO’s—the majority of whose only sin was apparently being well paid. But as Barack told us a few days ago, now is not the time for profits.

I think we are going to get many opportunities to say that. And he’s only been in office 2 weeks.

That doesn’t seem such a leap, either.

Every time he speaks, it seems to me, Obama demonstrates he knows very little about the economy, is not prepared to lead, and generally is in way over his head.

I have come to believe his learning curve is even longer than Clinton’s was in 1992 and it took Slick Willie at least a couple of years to figure out that the less he listened to the Far Left, the better off he and the rest of us were all going to be. Something tells me that Obama might not get it as quickly.

and grasping for a life preserver. The life preserver being the passage of the Porkulus bill. Ads on his behalf are running everywhere for folks of their state to call their GOP Senators and tell them to vote for this monster. Assuming the Democrat Senators will fall in line and just vote as the House did. If the Democrats would read the darn thing instead of the GOP ,talk radio, and a handful of the media exposing the spending for them, they might think twice about their re-election in 2010. How long will they prop up thier incompetent Leader and risk their careers?

I wonder how many of the induhviduals (thanks Dogbert) who voted for the former junior senator from the State of Illinois are thinking exactly that right about now. Oh wait, if they were thinking they wouldn’t have . . . never mind.

They were screaming to the high hills about Sarah Palin being too inexperienced to be second in command.

If course, they couldn’t be bothered to see if this guy was really ready for the top job – “That’s just Republicans being their nasty, partisan selves. Pay no attention, they see they’re about to lose and they’re grasping at straws.”

    Hmmph.

but I turned on CNN last night and they had the big title saying Obama: “I screwed up.” Upon seeing that, I wondered…is he talking about the stimulus, the appointments, or overselling his ability to bring immediate change during the election?

Apparently, it’s the appointments. Fair enough.
