Alexandria, Virginia Can’t Handle The Truth

Jim Moran Wanted To Bring Terrorists To His District. His Constitutents Are Not Thrilled.

Jim Moran's District, the new GitmoNorthern Virginia is pretty much the classic example of an upscale suburban area that has gone much bluer in the past 4 years, and exactly the sort of place where it has been fashionable to be horrified by the detention without trial of enemy combatants at Guantanamo Bay…without giving a second thought to what you would do with those detainees if you closed the place. As long as George W. Bush was president, it was safe and easy to complain about Gitmo without facing those realities.

That was then; Bush is gone now, and with his successor actually entertaining the daft notion of bringing detainees stateside for trials in our criminal justice system, an idea long championed by Congressman Jim Moran of Virginia’s 8th District (which includes Arlington and Alexandria, “the heart of Northern Virginia”) suddenly the residents of Alexandria are awakening to the problem:

“We would be absolutely opposed to relocating Guantanamo prisoners to Alexandria,” Mayor William D. Euille (D) said. “We would do everything in our power to lobby the president, the governor, the Congress and everyone else to stop it. We’ve had this experience, and it was unpleasant. Let someone else have it.”

+++

Alexandria Sheriff Dana A. Lawhorne, who operates the city jail, said federal security requirements for housing suspects could “overwhelm the system” if multiple detainees are brought there.

City officials and some legislators are concerned that terror trials would take years, shut down roads and cost millions and could invite attacks from terrorist sympathizers. Business owners in the dense area around the courthouse — newly filled with hotels, restaurants and luxury apartments — fear disruptions amid a declining economy.

+++

Moussaoui, who spent 23 hours a day inside his 80-square-foot cell, was constantly monitored and never saw other inmates. An entire unit of six cells and a common area was set aside just for him.

“It was a real hassle,” said Alan Yamamoto, one of his lawyers. “Bringing even two or three or four people over there is going to be a major headache.”

+++

The 450-inmate jail was locked down every time Moussaoui was moved to the back of the nearby courthouse in a heavily armed convoy. Traffic was stopped as snipers watched from rooftops.

Read the whole thing. Of course, the Alexandrians say for now that they just want this to be some other community’s problem. But it’s going to cause trouble no matter where you go, and everybody’s got a Congressman and two Senators who will be getting an earful.

Elections have consequences. Perhaps the people of Northern Virginia are starting to realize that.

    Want to do wind energy, but not off of Massachusetts, will interfere with Teddy Kennedy’s view of the ocean while he is downing some of daddys stores of used to be prohibition alcohol. Want to do solar energy, not by setting up solar cells in the Mojave Desert where you are guaranteed sun for about 8 – 10 hours a day because you will hurt a turtle according to Senator liberal idiot Feinstein. Now close GITMO, but don’t put detainees in my little piece of heaven in Norther Virginia, although I voted for the douchebag that can make it into a reality.

      What? You don’t like douchebags, even though you voted for one?

      They keep your honey smelling sweet. That’s got to be a good thing. Same thing with douchenozzles. Please accept my apology in advance if your honey is a man, and in no need of either a douche bag or nozzle

      And since I’m defending unpopular things, Feinstein worked hard in her career for the Mohave Preserve. That, and the purchase of the evaporation ponds around San Francisco Bay are going to be remembered as her legacy long after her time in the Senate has passed.

      I use the Mohave Preserve a couple of times a year. It’s a great place that would not be improved by photovoltaics (although all the ranger stations in it have them). If you want to pave a place with photovoltaics, I suggest the Nevada Test Site. 1300 square miles, limited access, and unarguably the most blighted place in the United States, with no regard whatsoever for endangered species. Conservatively, many gigawatts are available with just a small set-aside of 200 square miles.

      Finally, send the Guantanamo detainees to San Francisco for trials. We welcome immigrants and criminals of all races and creeds, and I doubt that you could find a bluer place in the nation, except maybe for Ann Arbor, Michigan. Ann Arbor doesn’t have a cool federal prison like San Quentin, though.

        For my point of douchebags, I was referring you your boy Obama, who wants to run the country on unicorn farts apparently because any time someone wants to put up anything that would be required for alternative energy another democrat idiot or envrionmentalist jackass wants to put the kibosh on it. And my point of view was more from the voter in Virginia voting for Obama in the first place.

        And I am sure about the GITMO thing that if anyone said to release them to San Fransisco or anywhere in Californina, they would pitch more of a bitch than they did when Prop 8 passed.

    Virginians dropped the ball last November. I’m still not sure how and why the majority of Virginia’s voters thought it in their best interest to elect a community organizer with no administrative resume, marinated in left-wing politics his entire adult life and has nothing but sustain for the US military.

    Northern VA is gone to the poltically correct liberals, transplants, D.C. retirees, and progressive youth who had no problem voting for Obama and would do it again. Its just the beginning of what I label “GEN PC”.

    Its like a plague and these newcomers are changing the poltical and social demographics which is directly what cost the Republicans VA. This is only the beginning for I fear they have lost it for at least a generation, probably two.

    Specific counties that are ruined are Prince Edward, Facquier, Fairfax, Alexanderia, Arlington, and Prince William. For examples of how they vote look at the recent elections of Sens. Webb and Warner both Dems in a typically blue state but contemporarily red. To me it aint even the South any more there.

    They’ve opposed cracking down on illegal immigrants in Prince Edward county, opposed the ban on gay marriage that the rest of VA supported, and got The One elected in Nov.

    In sum, NoVa has a Northern culture and isn’t Southern at all.

    That’s the last year the 8th District was represented by a native-born Virginian.

    All of Northern Virginia is overrun by carpetbaggers, but the 8th is the worst.

    But since it’s so liberal, the GOP can’t even seriously challenge Moran here.
