Finally, a Real Star Trek Captain

From the diaries by Erick.

For those of you who have watched the various television and movie versions of Star Trek, and have been wondering when are we going to see a real Star Trek Captain, finally we have one.

James Tiberius Kirk is back.

For those who like to give the middle finger to the world of the politically correct, buy two tickets, and settle in for a great show.

Parents who want to teach their children examples of leadership and courage — and sacrifice, take the whole family.

James Tiberius Kirk has always been a leadership role model, a character of great courage and vision and purpose.

There are far too few examples in today’s world of you-can’t-shake-hands-at-graduation because you might get a mild flu.

To those looking for an antedote to the wimpy, lets live in a risk free world, hang-wringing whiners — this movie is it.

It will be the biggest Star Trek ever, and finally brings some flaws, humor and humanity back to Star Trek, instead of the oh so morally superior, preachy Captain Picard.

The great thing about the movie is that the crew, not just Kirk, rocks.

There is great texture, depth, pain, suffering, defeat, triumph and grayness in each of them — and the movie brings them out to create a highly effective and personally appealing crew.

This is the control-alt-delete Star Trek, rebooting the entire story and time line.

The director J.J. Abrams has given Star Trek another two decades of life — hats off to the entire team.

Seeing it at 3:30 today. I was looking forward to seeing it anyway as a fan of great summer movies. But, your synopsis intrigues me even more!

The people never give up their liberties but under some delusion. — Edmund Burke

It does not require a majority to prevail, but rather an irate, tireless minority keen to set brush fires in people’s minds. — Samuel Adams

So is that a thumbs up or a thumbs down?

Me too.

I particularly liked Patrick Stewart in First Contact. He seems like an “actor’s actor” to me. Also, he has the kind of British accent that makes him seem very intelligent. I know that sounds silly, but don’t act like you don’t think the same thing.

Ok, this diary, Moe's, and Erick's has finally convinced me

TNJim Saturday, May 9th at 9:30PM EDT (link)

to go see it. My sticking point was the alternate timeline/parallel universe subplot I had heard about. Frankly, that’s a plot device that has been overdone by the franchise IMO. It was OK in “Mirror, Mirror” from the original series and “The Voyage Home” but after that I think they let it get a little out of hand, especially in DS9, which I generally liked otherwise. The brief glimpse of what Earth would have been like had the Borg been able to stop Zefram Cochran from making “First Contact” was OK, too, as was that whole movie, but those 3 instances were plenty for me.

But now my interest is piqued so I’m going to give it a chance, possibly tomorrow. Plus it’d be interesting to see the Enterprise lift off from Earth (That’s not a spoiler, the shots of it being constructed on the planet’s surface has been in most of the trailers).

Meanwhile, in another parallel universe...

Its all good, for all we know in one of the 18 Parallel universes out there, it all began the way it does in this 11th Star Trek movie

;)

Utopian Future?

Vannek Saturday, May 9th at 10:36PM EDT (link)

I saw it yesterday, in IMAX. Absolutely stunning, loved it. What really bugs me is I keep seeing reviews by hope’n'changey liberal writers that talk about Star Trek’s diversity and refer the series as showing a hopeful, “utopian” future. Utopian? Give me a break. Creatures are still at war with each other. They destroy whole planets and their populations (inadvertantly or intentionally). They beat the living daylights out of each other and kill each other. How is that utopian? Only in the warped reality of a liberal mind.

Also, Newsweek has a comparison of Star Wars/Star Trek to the Bush/Obama administrations (http://www.newsweek.com/id/195414) in which Obama is compared to Spock. I’ve always suspected that the Vulcans were a representation of the Jews (Nimoy’s use of the “live long and prosper” hand sign), and I think the new movie confirms that (6 million Vulcans killed with on 10,000 surviving). How can that relate in any way to Barack Obama, who is destroying our relationship with the Israelis in favor of appeasing Islam?

Getting above 90% on Rotten Tomatoes is not easy whatsoever. It’s a hit.
