Fun with Honest Budgeting

Dana Milbank of the Washington Post is funny, in his rendition of Majority Leader Reid and his quest to put $250 billion in ObamaCare off-budget, adding it to the deficit. It really is worth the read, here are his first paragraphs:

“I will not sign a plan that adds one dime to our deficits, either now or in the future — period,” President Obama told Congress in a health-care address last month.

Well, that depends on what the meaning of “plan” is….So Democrats hatched a novel scheme: They would pass the legislation separately, so the $250 billion cost wouldn’t be part of the main reform “plan,” thereby allowing the president to claim that that bill wouldn’t increase the deficit.

Or this: “Finally we’re coming to the first vote on health-care reform, and what do the Democrats propose to do?” Sen. Lamar Alexander (Tenn.) asked at the microphones. “They propose to raise the national debt by . . . a quarter of a trillion dollars, plus $50 billion interest.”

There is plenty of good stuff in the piece, especially the quote by Senator Reid who essentially said — I did it because the White House told me to do it (he lost the cloture vote on the motion to proceed 47 to 53, Reid needs 60 votes to shut down a filibuster.)

OK, I cannot resist to quote Milbank’s Senator Stabenow stuff:

“The sponsor of the doc fix, Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.), seemed unconcerned that the fix had put the party in one. “It really is about honest budgeting,” she said at a news conference Tuesday morning. On one side of her stood the AMA president. On the other side was a poster framed by a flag. One of its bullet points: “Honest budgeting.”

Honestly? A decade ago, Congress passed legislation designed to limit health-care costs by slowing the growth of Medicare payments to doctors. Each year, Congress passes a “patch” to prevent the cuts from taking effect. Stabenow proposed to make this system “honest” by eliminating the cuts permanently.

Medicare is hurtling toward insolvency, but Stabenow would essentially repeal past cost-cutting efforts. And even granting that it’s a good idea not to cut Medicare payments to doctors, it’s a strange interpretation of honesty to separate this $250 billion cost from the health-care bill and then claim that the other bill doesn’t raise the deficit.”

is a remarkable piece of work. I saw her performance with the chart on CSPAN today. It was comedy gold.

and since the doc fix will add 2.5 trillion dimes to the national debt, INoAmBush aka BsCare* can claim he’s just delievering what he promised.

The next time he chooses a single point number to avoid, INoAmBush aka BsCare should pick $516.32**.

    * The letters in INoAmBush aka BsCare can be rearranged to form the name of a certain Democratic politican.

will end up being the equivalent of President Clinton holding up his pen at the joint session of Congress — you know, his I will veto it speech

Is that how I should read this “…he lost the cloture vote on the motion to proceed 47 to 53, Reid needs 60 votes to shut down a filibuster.”

I called both my Dem senators for what it was worth.

    • Dan Perrin

      and thanks for calling!

    • The_Gadfly

the big THANK YOU for calling.

Technically they could call the bill up at any point or vote on another cloture motion, but Reid was doing a very very impressive imitation of Baghdad Bob today. News clip I saw said he only brought it to the floor because the AMA had assured him of a number of Republican votes for the bill and he was sure he’d win the vote. Instead he not only had unified opposition, he had 3 of “his” people voting against it. If this had been the actual Senate healthcare bill, it would have been defeated for the congressional calendar year. This was a huge victory. The AMA won’t support the unified healthcare reform proposal unless the Medicare reimbursement rates are set high enough so doctors aren’t losing money on the procedures. Putting those changes into the bill breaks it. They either wind up explicitly making even bigger tax increases or the CBO scores it as a budget buster.

His reform would not add “one dime” to our deficits either now or in future. 250 Billion is not a dime. Don’t try to indulge in mathematical trickery.

I met Sen Stabenow 10 years ago in DC. She struck me as being not very intelligent. Apparently I was a good judge of intellect.

What does that say about the people who keep on voting for her?

      • antisocial

The problem is with people who challenge her politically. The perception is the key. Perhaps her challengers can’t get their message out effectively.

Maybe I am wrong but I refuse to believe most people are stupid. It’s just that not everybody is as involved in politics as some are. They are so busy in their daily lives that they don’t pay enough attention. They base their judgment on the limited knowledge that they get during campaigns.

If you were not so involved would you be as informed?

I’m from Michigan and she is on my list. I send emails to her weekly and get her boiler plate answers to everything. I vote against her, I communicate with her and I am done with being passive and want to go viral. Somebody in the SW Oakland county contact me so that I can assist in her demise.

…that many elites were educated beyond their intelligence.

Stabenow is empowered beyond her competence.

    • Ausonius

      Who was her Republican opponent?

I lived in Toledo right across the border for 30 years and heard the gruesome nature of Michigan politics very often: To call Stabenow a cow, however, is an insult to our bovine friends!

      They at least are useful!

on Detroit, once the Arsenal of Democracy and now an empty shell of itself. I use Detoirt as a example in discussions with lefties as a model “Democrat run entity”. Hard to argue the point that we are better off with democrats in charge with that vision. Michigan un-employment is near 16% and climbing and Detroit is a huge chunk of that number. Republicans and conservatives (I keep the two separate) have a great opportunity in Michigan in 2010 starting with the governor where two Republicans are polling near double digit leads over the leading democrat, Cherry.

        • Ausonius

“Spencer Abraham is who she beat, a pretty good conservative.”

The danger of democracy is that sometimes it is dumb.

          Like last year.

Of course, maybe many of the conservatives have left Michigan, so only Dems are left to fight among themselves for the few remaining entrails.

          Like in Detroit.

Another case for eliminating the direct election of senators, but we all have our fantasies!

  • Republican_Michigander

My very first non-primary election, I voted against her for Congress. Then I voted against her for Senate after than. Then six years later I did the same thing, and I plan on voting against her in 2012 as well.

She’s an idiot. The only good thing was that Mike Rogers took her spot in Congress.

Does anyone else besides me think we have hit upon a really great rallying cry to oppose this government boondoggle they call health care reform?

    Not One Dime!
    Not One Dime!

I can hear it now.. being shouted at town halls throughout the nation.

We need to really hit them hard on this. We have to show how duplicitous Obama is. He likes to pretend he’s all hands-off on health care, but he’s behind this.. make no mistake. They simply cannot fund healthcare without increasing the debt massively. We cannot let them pull this crap.. everything needs to be on the table as part of one healthcare plan and let the CBO rate that!

    Not One Dime!
    Not One Dime!

    Not One Dime!
    Not One Dime!

One of my proudest moments politically was voting against her in her first run for the Senate. I think she has put on a hundred pounds since then.

I don’t live there any more so they are stuck with her now. How the once proud state of my youth keeps voting for these same tired ideas is a mystery to me. I think it is because most people with any sense have already bailed on the state.
