I voted for it, to improve it

They could have saved themselves, but instead, they followed a tortured inside-the-beltway logic that will be lost on the likely voter — I voted for it, to improve it. Uh-huh.

Did members cut spending? End funding of abortion? Enforce the prohibition against illegal immigrants getting the new health care benefit? Cut the $759 billion in new taxes? Curtail the gun health care database? Stop the Medicare cuts? No, oh. I see.

Sounds a whole lot like that famous line, “I voted for it, right before I voted against it.”

Blue Dogs and other Democratic Members of Congress are deluding themselves if they think they can state publicly they voted yes, to improve it. Or that a conference with the White House, the Senate and the House will produce a bill closer to the U.S. Senate’s version.

Instead, they are looking hard for excuses to do the wrong thing.

And if they are looking to end the unending political pain of the Speaker’s health care politics — then the way to end it is to end the bill, and vote no.

Otherwise, they will have to defend their vote in their election, and vote again on the Conference Report — if the bill makes it through the Senate, a very dubious proposition.

Instead, they will be walking the plank, the bill then dies in the Senate — and many of their number will then die in November, 2010.

Isn't that exactly why Olympia Snowe voted to get it out of Committee

Scope Friday, November 6th at 7:18PM EST (link)

so she could “make it better.” Hasn’t she done this before, just so she could get more perks for Maine, all to the detriment of the Republicans? Those of you that think she is not a dangerous vote, and much less dangerous than McCain, might need to rethink your positions. She may have her arm twisted back at this point, but, she will screw us again. Although, Maine just voted against Gay Marriage, she may be vulnerable after all.

hate to say it but I am really worried now

if this garbage can get through the house, there is a likely chance that something can get through the Senate, and with reconciliation you can bet that the final version will look more like the house than the senate.

This is A Number One bad news.

Right now, Pelosi

does not have the votes, and it doesn’t look like they are going to get the votes.

Keep up the pressure.

Unless they have zero political sense, they have to know their opponents will portray their vote as nothing short of a full endorsement of the bill (which is completely honest)

The problem is, some of these weak Democrats may think it’s wiser to cast their lot with Pelosi and promises from the Dem machine than take their chances as a “maverick” without help.

The reality is, the Democrats don’t have nearly enough resources to protect the 40 or so Dems that would likely be wiped out if they vote for this bill. Just look at Corzine, he outspent his opponent 3 to 1 and got beat handily in deep-blue New Jersey. Do you really think Pelosi can protect all of these Democrats in deep-Red states like Indiana or Arkansas?

If I was Democrat, I would vote against and take my chances, especially since it’s very likely this thing could die in the Senate anyway.

I have serious doubts that

Pelosi will find the votes by waiting.

First the vote was going to be Thursday, then Friday, now Saturday, and we are hearing now maybe Sunday.

So now the approach with moderates seems to be “That’s okay. You know it will get watered down by the Senate. So you’re safe to vote for it.”

That is the line they are pushing

Exactly, but it is not working.

I voted for your opponent, to improve Congress

the “maybe, possibly, perhaps” no’s Congressmen are being told we will forget by 2010, or other events will overtake this. We need to tell them if they get this wrong, they are wrong on EVERYTHING! They will have a better chance of absolution from the Pope than re-election from us.

If they vote for it,

the Dems will lose control of Congress

…because they will have gotten what they wanted,
