(And now for something completely different) today’s news that the Vatican is searching the Heavens for alien life follows previous announcements by the Vatican that belief in the existence of alien life and belief in Christianity are not incompatible.
Wow. Yeah.
So if you are the head of one of the world’s largest religions, and your leadership believes (presumably given the careful and slow nature of the Vatican, such a belief would be grounded in extensive research and fact) that alien life exists (while publicly stating alien life could exist), why would the Vatican be spending time and resources on this issue?
The answer is pretty straight forward, the Vatican is preparing for the day when the rest of the world knows — as opposed to believes — that alien life (that is intelligent visitors) exist.
The Vatican, and for that matter every other major religion, needs to be prepared philosophically and lay down a foundation of theology that is consistent with the existence of alien, intelligent life.
Simply put, the Vatican is preparing for the day aliens are revealed, or reveal themselves in an unambiguous manner.
Prudence dictates being prepared in this regard. Perhaps the whole Galileo Galilei inquisition thing has modified the Vatican’s approach to theologically disruptive discoveries.
(Also) looking at it through the other end of the telescope, the Vatican is preparing humanity for this knowledge by making public its efforts.
How do alien’s structure their society? Do they believe in God? (I think the answer is YES on that one, since they are intelligent — and oh boy, what fun that would be to tease the atheists on that.)
Do aliens use money? How is their society organized, are they a democracy? If not, how are resources allocated? Has technological advances in energy generation and space travel ended the need for working as humans do? Do telepathic powers re-define the political and economic structure of society — if everyone can read everyone’s thoughts?
My own view on the existence of alien life is that Earthlings will look back at the time when humans did not believe in the existence of intelligence alien life in same manner which we now look back at those who believed the earth was flat.
Wait, hold on, I think it’s EBE (Extraterrestrial Biological Entities) on the other line — uh, hello? (They want to talk, er communicate thoughts? on exopolitics on RedState.) ![]()

Whaaaat?
Scope Wednesday, November 11th at 10:56AM EST (link)The Vatican also believes Global Warming is real, and that we must do something about it NOW.
Having been raised, and educated, as a Catholic, I gave up on some of their teachings long ago, and, that was long before they started believing that the cute adorable ET is real.
A rather silly pursuit
alpharob1 Wednesday, November 11th at 12:05PM EST (link)Maybe if they read their Bibles they might get a clue as to how
history concludes. And no - it doesn’t involve aliens.
“Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.”
It is a highly unsettling thought
Dan Perrin Wednesday, November 11th at 12:07PM EST (link)though, isn’t it?
indeed.
Taniwha Wednesday, November 11th at 1:16PM EST (link)One of the first aspects of it that occurred to me is, if there ARE aliens, what are the chances that the very highest echelons of the Church know, even if the rest of us pishers don’t?
Put another way: perhaps, contacting aliens knew enough to go to them and not just the first dirtball they saw on the street. Making the requisite assumption about alien existence itself, I don’t find it all that unlikely.

If there was an alien-human meeting,
Dan Perrin Friday, November 13th at 9:25PM EST (link)and a delegation of representatives from the earth were to be invited, would you invite a representative from each of the world’s religions?
well again, arguendo...
Taniwha Wednesday, November 18th at 12:20PM EST (link)… perhaps the aliens are in a better position than us to know which religion is the correct one. If they did know the ‘correct’ answer, as it were, why would they then invite reps of the religions that they know to be false at best, and demonic at worst?
Thought-provoking, isn’t it?
————————
By the same token, there's no reason...
Taniwha Wednesday, November 18th at 12:40PM EST (link)… to assume the aliens aren’t themselves demonically inspired, and would show themselves to muslims as the 12th imam.
That the Roman Catholic Church is the one preparing us for the revelation, for me, is pretty encouraging. I can only hope they know something we don’t, which, as I said, doesn’t seem all that unlikely.

“Nature is not our mother: Nature is our sister. We can be proud of her beauty, since we have the same father; but she has no authority over us; we have to admire, but not to imitate.” - G. K. Chesterton, “Orthodoxy,” Chapter VIII.
It is prudent to

matt 5:22 for the uninformed:
22But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother[a]will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to his brother, ‘Raca,[b]‘ is answerable to the Sanhedrin. But anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell”
I have no chance of instructing such wise and knowledgeable folks but suggest they might want to read their bibles prior to pursuing such a silly pursuit as chasing after aliens. Appears quite inconsistent to me
as it relates to Scripture. Perhaps you have a different opinion? One
that’s supportable?
My apology...
Read Chesterton in New Improved Jersey Wednesday, November 11th at 1:13PM EST (link)I assumed you had actually read the AP article referred to in the diary, when actually you were just taking a cheap opportunity to be smug and condescending in showing off your Christian faith.

Even the casual misconceptions about Galileo come off as anti-Catholic...
Read Chesterton in New Improved Jersey Wednesday, November 11th at 12:08PM EST (link)Is Wikipedia the best you could do on Galileo? The “conventional wisdom” is always sure to fail to mention that Galileo’s observations on heliocentric motion were begun by Copernicus, a Catholic monk who never lost standing in the church. Galileo’s problem was a matter of church discipline, not heresy. He was ordered to revise his book - which probably would have been published and used only in Catholic universities anyway - to clarify that heliocentric planetary was still, technically at the time, a theory. It wasn’t scientifically proven until the 20th century. His other problem was that his book was written in the form of a dialogue portraying the pope as a moronic clown - OK for the Reformation era Europeans, not so much for a man of the church who wanted to remain in good standing. He eventually took his church discipline like a man with a house arrest in the papal mansion, still being treated like the rock star of his time that he was.
As for this or that being declared by “The Vatican,” please learn to be sceptical about that. The MSM will take the word of any secretary or cleric as papal ex cathedra doctrine if it fits their agenda to ridicule and discredit the Catholic faith.

I run BOINC on my PC because I use to contribute to the @home SETI program.
The_Gadfly Wednesday, November 11th at 12:10PM EST (link)I didn’t believe in ETs when I started, and I still don’t. They’re great for sf novels and all, but once you stop suspending disbelief and start looking at the astrophysics of it, nope. Space is too big and the speed of light is just too impossible a barrier. I contributed to SETI because at the time they were the only program I knew of where you could contribute PC time to astronomy research. I even had an email exchange with somebody at the home office to make sure the research was useful for other things and was assured it was. I stopped contributing not because of my non-belief, but because their feed servers kept disappearing for extended periods of time. These days I contribute to Einstein instead. They look for pulsars using gravitational wave data.
Shameless plugs:
If you are also interested in contributing checkout their website at http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/.
Of course the BOINC system is now being used for lots of other stuff. They list a bunch of stuff at their website (http://boinc.berkeley.edu/projects.php) and you can get the software at http://boinc.berkeley.edu/
We’ve been called racists enough now that it shouldn’t bother us any more.

Thoughts From a Fallen World
Jon 14:6 -
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.”
It’s not intellectual to believe we evolved from hydrogen gas.
The Alien Life Form Question In Valid.
Swamp_Yankee Thursday, November 12th at 12:01AM EST (link)This is a very valid and worthwhile pursuit. NASA just rammed the moon in pursuit of ice belts. There is a high probability that some form of life may be found someday, even if its microscopic. Its a thought provoking and interesting debate. The ones who will look silly are the ones who seek a literal explanation in the Bible.

Aliens...must be sinless. Or have a different Savior
Derek V. Baker Saturday, November 14th at 12:25PM EST (link)Very interesting indeed. Your comment: My own view on the existence of alien life is that Earthlings will look back at the time when humans did not believe in the existence of intelligence alien life in same manner which we now look back at those who believed the earth was flat.” seems to suggest quite a confidence in the existence of ETs.
I had always thought the idea was at least plausible until I began to consider the implications to my faith and what Scripture said about mankind and our sinful nature. To wit, all men originated from one man, and sin entered into men by that man (Romans 5:12). Genesis also records the story (reality, in my opinion) of all creation. I’ll admit that God did not comment as to whether he created “other” non-humans (though that’s a fairly large omission), but He did share to other items of note: 1) God created angels, which serve Him and are unseen, and 2) man’s sin creates a barrier between man and God, which requires a Savior, Jesus Christ.
So what’s the point of all that. Either aliens are 1) sinless and not in need of salvation, 2) God created another Messiah or Jesus died for them too (extremely problematic Scripturally), or 3) sin doesn’t exist.
From the perspective of a Christian with a high view of Scripture, I cannot reconcile the existence of other intelligent/alien life with the creation and redemption of man through God’s only Son.
And on a side note, I’m very unimpressed with these intelligent beings if they haven’t made it earth by now,… or they have, but they’re just so darn shy they won’t reveal themselves.
Minor rereading of John 10:16, maybe... nt
mschmitt Saturday, November 14th at 12:36PM EST (link)I was wondering when someone would comment
Dan Perrin Tuesday, November 17th at 8:29AM EST (link)on that sentence.
Yes, I believe that intelligent alien life exists, and have visited Earth for many centuries.
As far as the theological implications, I would add a fourth and fifth possibility: 4) that Christ appeared no where else in the known universe and the aliens (EBEs) are actually miffed that Christ showed up here, among us violent and so un-evolved spiritually humans. This could mean that Christ meant for humans to carry his message to the EBEs, but all will become clearer over time.
and 5) any clarity about these questions is not possible until they reveal themselves, or they are revealed, which is what I think is the best posture to be in now.
