“There is a worry that Sen. Nelson means business,” — Dem Aide says

And all the kings horses, and all the kings men, couldn’t put Humpty Dumpty together again…OK, we aren’t there, yet.

But the left is starting to flex its muscles and are beginning to be annoyed, and really concerned about all the compromises that have been made thus far.

The pro-abortion forces know that there is a good chance the bill will not go to conference, where the leadership can change it at will. The first thing that would go would be the abortion restrictions — but having a House-Senate conference is not a certainty. The fastest way to the President’s desk, is to send the Senate bill directly to the House for an up or down vote – if it passes.

As you, dear reader know, I do not think the bill will make it past the Senate floor, but many on both sides disagree — pessimistic opponents and rose-colored-glasses-wearing-proponents. I am mentioning the “ping-pong” strategy of skipping conference because the pro-abortion forces cannot take the risk that Senator Nelson’s demands make it into the bill and the bill goes to the House, without going to (as they see it) the cleansing conference. (I am assuming, in this the bill will die prediction, that the Senate GOP Leadership stops their insane agreements to Senator Reid’s unanimous consent requests. As long as ObamaCare is on the Senate floor, Republicans must stop agreeing to any unanimous consent agreements regarding votes on amendments — but more on this in another post.)

Enter, on Friday, Senator Nelson’s “line in the sand” comment and Politico’s story with the following quote:

“I don’t ordinarily draw a line in the sand, but I have drawn a line in the sand,” Nelson said Friday.

There are those who will say that Senator Nelson will fold like a house of cards and cave on his demands, but here is what Politico is reporting:

“There is a worry that Sen. Nelson means business,” said a senior Senate Democratic aide, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss strategy. “Unlike with public option, there is very little ground liberal Democrats are willing to give on this issue. Abortion, not the public option, may be the cause of our first official defection.”

The dirty little secret among the Democratic Senate leaders is that their consensus call on the abortion issue, their collective and conventional wisdom was that they could roll the pro-abortion Senators. Maybe they could have if Stupak had not passed the House, but now the pro-abortion forces must win. They have no choice. (From their perspective, they are incredulous that they are facing massive abortion restrictions when their friends and allies are running the show — President Obama is in the White House and the Democrats control both Houses of Congress. Political shock to any constituency usually means anger.)

Senator Nelson, however, is effectively kicking sand in their face by making sure that God and everybody knows that he is going to prevent abortion being funded by taxpayer funds in this bill.

The size of the loss of the by the pro-abortion forces in the House was another shock to both sides of the debate, and if the pro-abortion forces lose again in that Senate they will begin to face a series of restrictions on abortion in the years ahead since they are clearly weak, (and weakness invites pain in Washington,)

So again, the health care debate hits the pause button on the issue of killing babies with taxpayer funds.

And over the next week we will find out if the pro-abortion forces will be rolled in the Senate, as the Democratic leadership believes, or, if the pro-abortion forces will find a Senator or Senators to draw their own line in the sand.

Stay tuned, but the Senate health bill is weak on its feet, and swaying with the repeated body blows it is taking, as the Democrats in Congress and the President continues to sink in the polls.

The fact that the entire health bill has been a political failure for the trillion-dollar President and the Democratic Congress is beginning to catch up with the Democrats. This is merely a symptom of a that political failure.

The Dems safest political option is walk away and let the bill die. It will surprise me if the risk adverse members of the Senate do not take the safest route, pounding their chest about abortion or the public option as the cover story for letting the bill die.

And given Obama’s political weakness, his cries about destroying his Presidency are moot, since he and his Jonestown Kool-Aid gang (here, drink this, everything will be fine — we promise we can revive you) at the White House has had the greatest hand in its destruction. Congress is not responsible, nor can it undo the self-inflicted damage — except to stop continuing political injury being caused by ObamaCare.

I don’t care how it dies, but the ‘Democrats can’t simultaneously buy off the various extremities of their various constituencies’ is a particularly satisfying one.

Agree, it must die at all costs. However, i do prefer immensely that it die on the rocks of abortion funding. That would make me happy. Very, very happy.

That’s a new one on me too.

I thought code speak for that was “True Conservatism”, as opposed to fiscal, military or law and order conservatism, the other two legs of the R stool which are so unimportant to the SIVV folks.

“as the Democrats in Congress and the President continues to sink in the polls.”

Obama, per yesterday’s rasmussenreports poll, is at exactly the same approval as before his Afghanistan strategy speech. Per RR, he received NO bounce from his speech at West Point.

The dithering seems to have been drug out due to concerns about the domestic agenda, notably HCR. Shocking that political ploys no longer sway the electorate.

The PResident’s sinking approval is key because, for one thing, promising a cushy position in the administration to those who fall on their swords would be more attractive if there is more than just The One (term).

“There is a worry that Sen. Nelson means business,”

This is sad test testimony to the state of affairs in Washington. Imagine, a senator actually mean what he says! And the funny thing about it is it utterly stops the political machine in its tracks. We are in desperate need of politicians with the courage of their convictions.

Andrea Mitchell tweets that a Dem told her the strategy is...

to get either Snowe or Lieberman and blow off Nelson.

I fully expect this to happen

Bill S (Diary) Sunday, December 6th at 5:18PM EDT (link)

They will compromise on the public option to get the Maine twins and Lieberman on board. Then Nelson is irrelevant.

I think we underestimate both Reid and Pelosi’s ability to manipulate their respective sides of Congress. This will get reconciled, somehow. It is not going to die.

Yeh, and it's just about semantics too.

jeffreywturner (Diary) Sunday, December 6th at 5:46PM EDT (link)

All they are trying to do now is change the wording of the public option to something Snowe and / or Lieberman will accept.

IE: they are trying to find a way to have the public option, but just call it something else. You know, they same way they came up with the term “public option” as a disguise for their way of eventually inflicting single-payer on us. Well, it is the same thing now, only they are taking it a step further and trying to find a term to disguise the public option.

I Doubt There's Any Upside for Snowe To Bail The Dems Out...

IJB Sunday, December 6th at 5:48PM EDT (link)

…So I doubt she will do it.

Ditto Lieberman.

Bottom line: If the Dems can’t pull Nelson of NE and Lieberman into the “Yes” camp, they don’t lose this vote by 2 – they lose it by 15.

Actually, Snowe has really only "hurt" us once,

with the TARP vote and IMO she voted YEA only because she got cover from Specter. If you examine her voting record – and Collins’ – they vote other than we’d prefer alot but they’re never the deciding vote. They also have no clout in the Senate and don’t “start” stuff lime McCain or Graham. I’m in Arizona and I’d gladly swap McCain for either Snowe or Collins. McCain HURTS us, The ME Girls are just an irritant.

Scope you are a pinhead.

In point of fact, Snowe and Collins are the best we can do in Maine. Unless you’ve got a list of names of conservatives in Maine who can give them a run for their money.

Snowe and Collins vote as part of the Republican caucus for Senate leadership. If we pick up five Senate seats in ’10 you’ll just love the Me Girls.

Now then, neither of them has yet to sponsor legislation that hurts the country or the Party – see John McCain on a whole raft of crap and Lindsay Graham working with Kerry on Cap’n'Tax.

I’ve read her vote history. It makes more sense and is substantially less offensive than your pathetic posting history.

Using cover to let the bill die

countessolenska Sunday, December 6th at 4:48PM EDT (link)

I have a feeling that Senator Nelson’s strenuous objections to federal funding for abortion in the health care bill are to a large degree about wanting to find some excuse to kill this bill. Maybe he’s willing to take the fall for the Democrats in the Senate. I don’t know for sure, as I don’t know a lot about Senator Nelson’s previous voting record on abortion, but it just seems too convenient.

Andrea Mitchell usually has the inside scoop, but I don’t see how Lieberman is going to be “gotten.” I believe he is sincere that he thinks this bill will be bad for the economy.

And, I don’t think Obama is getting a bounce from his West Point speech because his strategy doesn’t really satisfy anyone – left or right. It’s pretty much what people expected it would be.

And besides, I can’t help but think that the things that are REALLY bringing Obama down are continuing resentment about the bailouts and the unpopularity of the health care reform efforts – in addition to general feelings of bleakness about the economy.

Close to deal on public option compromise?

countessolenska Sunday, December 6th at 5:19PM EDT (link)

Feingold stated on ABC that the Dem Senators were close to a deal on the public option. It would involve a plan supervised by the Federal Employee Health Benefits Plan, but all of the options would be non-profit.

And, Obama made a visit to Capitol Hill today (with Biden and others) talking about the historic nature of the bill – nothing this important since FDR created Social Security. Great, but despite Social Security’s “successes,” it’s unsound financially.

izoneguy (Diary) Sunday, December 6th at 9:55PM EDT (link)

It’s outrageous that it’s still “politics as usual”. This is like political payoffs on steroids. And you know when these politicians get voted out of office then the deals will die with their political careers. Harry Reid is on thin ice himself. I would not trust that slime bucket for a nano-second.

WHAT will really be interesting is to see where Dirty Harry ends up after Jan 21, 2011……

Those who had once simpered: “I don’t want to destroy the rich, I only want to seize a little of their surplus to help the poor, just a little, they’ll never miss it!” – then, later, had snapped: “The tycoons can stand being squeezed; they’ve amassed enough to last them for three generations” – then, later, had yelled: “Why should the people suffer while businessmen have reserves to last a year?” – now were screaming: “Why should we starve while some people have reserves to last a week?” – Atlas Shrugged

But isn't the US Treasury his private casino? nt

voters here in Nebraska are FURIOUS that he voted to allow the bill to move forward. Typical Ben move, saying he voted in favor of it just to move the debate to the floor, while he licks his finger, sticks it in the air, and sees which way the wind is blowing to save his fake-haired rear end.
This abortion amendment by him isn’t a line in the sand; it’s a way to get back in our good graces. This guy hasn’t seen an earmark he doesn’t like (your tax dollars helped pay for a parking lot for our museum here in Omaha) and he’ll sell his vote to the highest bidder. Nebraska had a big opportunity to get this turncoat out of office in 2006 and blew it.
If this passes andhe even votes against it, he’ll still have hell to pay in two years, and I intend to make him unemployed with my last breath if that happens.

strikeeagle (Diary) Monday, December 7th at 7:38AM EDT (link)

The ONLY way to prevent Federally-funded abortions is to NOT give the Federal Government:
1. The AUTHORITY to define health plan benefits (public or commercial/private plans)
2. The FUNDING to pay for health plan services
The current Democrat health care reform plans provide for both.

To support HCR even with the Stupak Amendment cedes the Pro-Life Agenda to:
1. An Administration that will define and interpret what services are covered in health plans
a. Re-interpreting the Public Law without regard to original spirit and intent or other components of the administration striking the provision down; e.g. Attorney General, Civil Rights Commission, etc.
b. A politically-appointed Secretary of Health and Human Services defining benefits and writing the implementing regulations; e.g. determining abortion is in the best “emotional/mental” health of the mother . . .
c. Not enforcing, ignoring or turning a “blind eye” to violations of the law; e.g. it wasn’t an abortion, but a “D&C” . . .

2. The Congress that can change the law at a later date (or even in the Conference Committee)

3. The Federal Courts and relying on them
a. Not striking the law down as unconstitutional
b. Not having activist judges (appointed by President Obama and confirmed by the Democrat Senate) interpreting what services health plans should cover and what are “necessary” services, or by accepting challenges to Stupak
c. As our experience with them is thirty-six years later, Roe versus Wade is still the law of the land

These risks are not only with abortion, but euthanasia and assisted-suicide services as well.

Plain and simple, the Pro-Life Movement cannot support bestowing this much power to the state and most oppose ALL health care reform efforts that include the Federal government. It is naïve to believe Federalized health care will not lead to Federally-funded abortions and assisted-suicides.

I happen to agree with you strikeeagle.

mbecker908 (Diary) Monday, December 7th at 8:07AM EDT (link)

And I’m assuming that you’re responding to my comment above.

For the record I wasn’t talking about people who are “pro-life”, I was talking about “single issue values voters”. The difference would be a Huckabee supporter who, when confronted with the fact that Huckabee is nothing more than Huey P Long wrapped in pro-life platitudes were perfectly willing to ignore the fact that until Obama entered the race he was easily the most liberal person running. They hinged their support on his platitudes about a Human Life Amendment, which he never defined and of which there are seven versions.

SIVVs are generally incapable of rational thought and would look at a government controlled health care system that did not allow abortion to be funded as a major win. They are incapable of processing the three important points that you make, both of which are absolutely true, and I think #3 would happen within six months.

Change

Sadly, it wouldn't be the first time we won the battle, only to lose the war - nt

strikeeagle (Diary) Monday, December 7th at 12:42PM EDT (link)

The reason for that is exceedingly simple.

mbecker908 (Diary) Monday, December 7th at 9:13PM EDT (link)

Too many people on “our side” are unwilling to recognize and admit that we are, in fact, at war. They look at “legislative battles” when they should be planning how to fight the war for the soul of the nation. And, like it or not, abortion is only one skirmish in the larger battle.
