MEMBER DIARY

Dems Still Do Not Have the Votes

The Democratic Leadership told FOX News this morning they do not know which members will vote Yes, but that they will have 216. Rep. Wasserman Schultz also admitted the vote count was, uh, “in flux.”

The truth of the matter is that the vote count will be in flux up until the gavel comes down to end the vote.

The Moderate Voice is suggesting the vote be delayed, because they are very worried about losing the vote. (And they wrote the post when FireDogLake had the No votes at 208, but FireDogLake is now at 209 No votes.)

The Hill’s Whip Count is showing 37 Democrats voting, or leaning No. 38 Dems voting No is the magic number — at that point it is over for the Speaker. The Dems lose. The Hill has 15 Members at undecided.

The Washington Post has only 31 Dems voting No and 24 undecideds, but they know the Dems are still without the Yes votes they need.

RollCall cites setbacks for the Dem Leadership of Rep. Space, Rep. Matheson and Rep. Nye all voting No, as well as the fact that “there are no other easy targets for leadership among Democrats who voted ‘no’ in November.”

FireDogLake has the No votes at 209, with 204 Yes and 10 leaning No and 8 unknown. FireDogLake puts the Speaker down by 12 votes, and the No side down 7.

I know, from sources on both sides of the House aisle, the Dems do not have the votes.

Bottom line: The Red Queen Still Does Not Have the Votes.

theirr vote once they’ve voted. In other words if they’re given 10 minutes or whatever and immediately vote one way do they get the option of pulling it and then changing it. Giving HER time to harrass our people.

According to Fox News. He is buying the Executive Order BS. He as looking for such a deal according to Life News:

      http://www.lifenews.com/nat6158.html

Also from the Hill is a report saying they are close to a deal: http://thehill.com/homenews/house/88079-stupak-we-are-close-to-deal-with-the-white-house

Due to the timing and the fact I just heard this on Fox, it seems they may have reached a deal. Melt the phone lines of the Stupak bloc and do it now. The voters are not stupid. Executive orders are temporary and governement controlled healthcare will, at some point in the future have federally funded abortion. The only soltion is to KILL THE BILL.

This guy must be an idiot.

apparently, it is true, you do have to be a fool to be a Democrat. OR maybe just totally corrupt.

I don’t see how Kaptur was going to vote “no.”

      • JHancock

He is married to leftist ideology, for which he is considering throwing the unborn under the bus.. Not too surprising….at the end of the day there is no one who the Left will not sacrifice for “The Good of the Many”

and run and hide. Dump their Blackberry in the trash, so they do not get lo-jacked and found.

They need to go to somewhere they have never been before, like a park. No staff, no phone.

      • eburke

If you’re voting no, and you don’t want to be turned into a pinata, vote early, get the hell out of the chamber, turn off your phone, and hide.

10 minutes later or however long the vote is kept open. We need an up-or-down vote, just as the President asked.

STUPAK or should i say stupidpak

    • Sundayjack

Stupak gives the impression that some sort of executive order will satisfy him, and he also sounds like that’s an eventuality.

      That’s discouraging.

      • Dan Perrin

If Stupak caves on this and Right to Life lets him, there needs to be a revolution.

What a JOKE — an Executive Order is a complete JOKE.

If it meant anything at all, the pro-aborts would oppose it.

        • RealQuiet

All those appearances on the media networks and news outlets. Just so you can show to the world that you are the definition of FRAUD.

          • Sundayjack

I guess you rely on what you know. Bart Stupak isn’t a conservative, and never was. Where his website tells us (on healthcare): “I believe every American has the right to health care coverage.. . . ” I guess we should take him at his word.

Vote NO. You ar e selling out those that voted you in.

    • http://www.FranBaker.com frankieb

But it hasn’t seen the light. At least not yet. The gist of my post is that there aren’t enough doctors or dentists NOW who are willing to take Medicaid patients. Just wait till you get millions more of ‘em!

      • http://www.FranBaker.com frankieb

I hold Power of Attorney for my surrogate aunt – a woman I?ll call Mary. Mary and my mother became friends in 1938 and, before she died in 2000, my mother asked me to look after Mary in her stead. That explained, Mary now has an encroaching case of dementia, lives in a nursing home, and is a Medicaid recipient.

Mary needed dentures a little over a year ago. Because there is only one dentist in our county who accepts Medicaid patients, we had a over a month’s wait for an appointment. When we arrived and filled out the papers, we joined approximately 40 other patients in the waiting room. Some were adults, many were children, all were on Medicaid.

I should have guessed by the way the children screamed after they were taken in, but I didn?t know until Mary was called into the dental chair an hour or so after our arrival that she would not be given prescription pain medication for the extraction of half her teeth (the other half would be extracted some weeks later). Need I add I was horrified at the thought of her going through this without something to dull the pain? The dentist was kind enough to give her some Tylenol, but even in her foggy mental state, Mary suffered terribly through that first extraction. To dull her pain before the second extraction, I gave her an extra-strength Tylenol and the dentist gave her one after. But she still suffered and she still bled, horribly.

This is the painful truth about Medicaid. There aren?t enough doctors or dentists or nurses now. Where will we get even more to take care of the massive flood of Medicaid patients we?re likely to see if and/or when this bill passes? And with our high unemployment numbers and lower tax revenues, there isn?t enough money to pay for all these new Medicaid patients.

There are sensible things we can do to expand coverage but this country is in danger of going bankrupt for real if we don?t do this right. And the bill that?s up for a vote today is not the right way to solve the problem.

    • peg_c

Doctors and pharmacies are doing that right now on their own.

Today we must man the boats, and like General Washington, cross the Delaware. They do not have the votes; and now we must take the beaches like our Soldiers and Marines in Normandy, and the Pacific. We must attack and attack and attack all day and through the night. Our weapons are the phones, e-mail, and faxing. Leave voice-mails if necessary.

Below are our targets. E-mail this list to your friends, neighbors, and relatives. Take this list and strike for your country; strike for our heritage; strike for your children; strike for our future. Never give in; never let up. Like the 101st Airborne Division, “Strike Fear!” We are Americans, and we do not quit – not ever!

If they flip the Stupak group without losing any pro-choice hawks, we are toast. Even if some surprises emerge (i.e. Sanchez), Pelosi will get over the finish line if she gets to the Stupak 10.

    • swami7774

In the end, he’s a Democrat. He’s got a price and will get it.

      This is why elections matter.

      • thurman

It’s obvious that the Dims do NOT have the votes without Stupak’s bloc and this has held them up all along

My only hope was that by caving to him, they would cause a revolt with the pro-abortioners, so they were in a Catch-22

But it’s obvious from everything he’s said all along he desperately WANTS to vote for HCR if Pelosi will just give him cover

I don’t understand this Exec Order BS but I’ve been pretty pessimistic all morning now– it’s obvious he’s feeling the heat and just wants any excuse to vote aye

        • earlgrey

          around noon today.

  • Swamp_Yankee

I believe the Dems have about five yes votes in reserve, guys like Pomeroy, who want to stay out of the fray and let some other Dem stick their neck out, so the Dem leadership can release him.

Pelosi and Hoyer are sitting on a bunch of guys going “I’m a yes, but get the other guy to say he’s a yes first”. and the other guy is samying the same thing.

But if one or two more fence sitters come out with solid NOs it may keep them on the sidelines, especially if they come from outside the Stupak Bloc.

I’d love to have some wildcard come out as a no like Lynch or Sanchez, maybe Foster, or Michaud

    • swami7774

The Red Queen knows she has about 218 votes. That way none of her lackeys will be tarred with “he/she was the deciding vote on this bill” in the fall campaigns.

    • nessa

If they are forced to stand and state their vote I don’t think all the promised Yes’s will come through. They may not come through anyway. Some of Nancy’s promised votes will have to be guided while Steny whispers calming words into their ears, their eyes rolling like a horse inside a burning barn.

      • http://www.suvstrategery.blogspot.com SoFiMil

I agree though, I think amost the entire democratic congress doesn’t want this vote. Maybe one of the Dems can create another internal scism or something that will help them “save face” to get them out of this vote.

  • annas

The talk shows seem to be rolling over saying it is a done deal. All the Dems are beaming on there saying this will be a plus for them in November as people will see what a wonderful give away program it is for them and will be delighted. PLEASE say you think people will finally see that these give away programs cost us all dearly! Even as I write this, I think Wasserman-Schultz is right–people will be delighted they are getting something for nothing (nothing being us “rich people’s money”).

    • proudgop

just announced she is voting yes

      • miconservative

then the White House has no reason to negotiate with Stupak. Peeling off his coalition without any deal.

    • miconservative

I think we are going to lose? Not going to happen. They have to express confidence in order to secure those who are wobblying. The fact that Obama is apparently negotiating with Stupak tells you they are short. Need to bombard Stupak with calls telling him not to sell out.

  • miconservative

In response to Dan’s earlier post…I would bet that RTL is waiting to see what comes of these ridiculous Stupak negotiations with Obama on an Executive Order. The Exec order would mean nothing and should provide absolutely no relief to RTL. This is the most pro-abortion legislation in the history of the Republic. Also the Admin could simply rescind the order or change the way they interpret it immediatly after issuing.

This thing is so fluid, but it seems like Stupak desperately wants to vote for this and will take whatever he can get. He has been strong so far but it could be just the same as last time when he caved for an amendment that he knew would never see the light of day in the Senate. And now he has been told to pound sand by Pelosi, etc, yet he continues to hold out hope that an agreement can reached that protects the unborn. Whatever agreement he reaches isn’t worth the paper its printed on and Bart will pay a dear price.

    • JSobieski

There have been so many news stories over the past couple of weeks on Stupak’s “optimism” o r on reaching an “agreement” that turned out to be false.

Lets explode is phone lines, and pray to God people voting today don’t lose their senses.

    • RealQuiet

Ace believes Stupak is begging for cover and I have to agree with that. The pro-choice caucus basically said that Stupak has been desperately trying to get some sort of cover deal per NRO last night. It all makes sense. I’ve had it wrong all along. Stupak wants to satisfy his pro-life constituency, unions, and liberals. He wants to keep his job and is afraid that losing any one of these segments will torpedo his re-election chances. What a WEASEL if this winds up being true. Funny, but the image of him waving a useless executive order toward Catholic and pro-life constituencies tells me it that it isn’t going to be so believable. Of course, that is an understatement.

      • miconservative

on the 4th Sunday of lent. Those supposedly pro-life dems who have been threatened chairmanships or promised other rewards should take heed of the bible reading from my church today. From Paul’s letter to the Phillipians:

Yet whatever gains I had, these I have come to regard as loss because of
Christ. More than that, I regard everything as loss because of the surpassing
value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss
of all things, and I regard them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ
and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from
the law, but one that comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from
God based on faith. I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection
and the sharing of his sufferings by becoming like him in his death, if
somehow I may attain the resurrection from the dead.

Not that I have already obtained this or have already reached the goal; but I
press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Beloved, I do not consider that I have made it my own; but this one thing I do:
forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press
on toward the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus.

      • writeblock

…He wouldn’t be negotiating in the first place if this weren’t so. It’s patently obvious the EO won’t prevent government sponsored abortions.

  • jaykali

This executive order BS is that just. Seriously after all this time Stupak is going to take an IOU on anti-abortion language? Does he think that’s going to satisfy anybody? Why did he hold out so long?

If the Stupak bloc goes (and it will) you we can announce the death of the pro-life democrat bc they are as extinct as the ‘conservative’ democrat. I hope people will learn that if you vote democrat you are voting for a liberal/progressive agenda. What makes me crazy is people who vote for their so-called conservative democrat and think that will influence policy – it absolutely doesn’t matter – all it does is draf these things out.

    • miconservative

Tell him a sell out will not be forgotten. Need to bombard RTL and tell them to get into the game as well. Dan had it absolutely right in his previous post.

companies should have gone loudly public with their projections about the layoffs that would result from it because of this travesty. They waited until it was too late. Is it possible Scott Brown’s election may have caused them to put down their arms, allowing Pelosi to re-load while they slept?

Or did conservatives and the GOP simply not do a good job of getting the employers which are near or in these Dem districts to speak out about layoffs?

The old “all politics is local” is always true; thus, the biggest ammo the opponents of the bill had were the employers of each House district.

I think a congress critter can be more famous for casting the winning “NO” vote than the Winning “YES” vote.

Certainly looks that way, as there is Great Fear of the 216th “Yes” vote…..more so than the “NO” side of voting.

Guaranteed re-election (at this point in time) versus the polls and high probablility of beng a NJ, Va., Mass. instant replay participant, on the Deemocrat side.

  • usedtobelib

politically was to front load the provision about insurances having to offer coverage for a “child” until the age of 26 since so many are unemployed. This will please middle-class Americans and off-set much of what they hate about the package. However, it will extend neotony, something we have enough already.

I believe the GOP needs to be more direct in its sloganeering. People need directness:

“Fifty percent of this country now pays the way in life for fifty percent of everyone else. The welfare state has done nothing but grow. What makes you think, America, that the fifty percent who do the paying, most of whom are middle class just like you, will continue to be stupid enough to not join the other side”?

Man, I would have loved for someone on our side who got camera time to have said this, over and over.

    • avgjo

It is the middle class that doesn’t want this. The rationing, death panels and increased premiums don’t make up for these ‘benefits’ and they know it.

      • mavericktime

because it’s so bad, but he thinks we must make a start – that things can be improved down the road. I wonder how many Democrats are buying that argument – I bet a lot.

        • avgjo

but i could care less about the dems. we need the middle class to throw these bums out and restore the country, and yes, REPEAL this if it passes.

    • Hera

Back when I was in college you could stay on your parents insurance policy up to age 23. I’m sure there are people besides me who know that. The taxes, increased insurance premiums, layoffs and rationing start this year. Just how smart is that?

    • eburke

that even the American Idol dolts among us can figure out:

The bill has 10 years of revenue and only 6 years of expenses. You do the math.

The bill will mandate that every American buy health insurance and that provision will be enforced by the IRS.

The second one is golden, I guarantee you. I dropped that on a life-long Dem co-worker of mine who thinks this bill is the cat’s meow. Watching his jaw drop open and his eyes bug out was priceless. You could’ve knocked him over with a feather (no mean feat since he ways about 375)

Keep it simple, folks. And say it again…and again…and again.

      • avgjo

We need a massive, consistent and continuous program of discredit. And these things you say are the foundation.

Let me know what you’re working on.

put “smartest” in scare quotes. As just about every provision of this bill is, it’s devastating to the health of our republic, but…it is a politically smart thing to have done. It gives just enough middle class voters, people who realize this bill doesn’t benefit them in any other way, an immediate benefit.

Take a look at this Gallup finding: http://pollingmatters.gallup.com/
    From the link:

“Who will reap real-world, tangible benefits from the new legislation?

” Americans appear to have an answer to this question: The pending healthcare legislation is the functional equivalent of a Medicaid bill. The legislation will help the poor and those who currently don?t have health insurance, but at the cost of a net negative impact for most other groups affected.

“This conclusion comes from the remarkable findings of Wednesday Gallup polling. The survey question asked Americans if the ?bill now being considered in Congress? would make things better or worse for a list of 10 different entities.

Results: Only two entities would gain more than they lose if the healthcare legislation now being considered in Congress is passed into law. These are:
Americans who do not have health insurance
    Lower income families.

All other entities tested are perceived by John and Jane Doe out there across America as being net losers from the passage of the new bill. ”

That last sentence boggles the mind–voters know they are the “net losers” yet the Dems are voting “yes” anyway. So, why would a Dem congressman feel relatively secure in voting “yes” even though the average American sees himself as a “net loser”?

Because polling shows that only 33-35% of registered Democratic voters are opposed to the legislation. What that means is that the Dem representatives believe that their Democrat constituents are very, very altruistic, that even though they realize the legislation will not benefit them, they are willing to bear the burden for their less fortunate or their lazy neighbors.

Add to that reasoning the thought of being an outcast in their own party on the Hill should they bolt, and you have the reason for their “yes” vote.

I am one who believes that only a handful of true believers in the Dem House really likes the direction in which this bill takes the country. The others hate it but had no coalition to fight the Speaker or the President. Face it: our Congress is not made up of the brightest bulbs in the pack. The days when really intelligent, serious, thoughtful people of action went into politics were over long ago. There were no strong coalitions other than the Stupak one because the others are NOT leaders. They had no agendas. They were content to let a speaker, any speaker, lead them. They simply like the perks and the title of “Congressman.”

One of the best things to come out of this is that a guy like Paul Ryan has gotten face time. People are impressed.

  • treeofliberty

    Stupak better hold…

  • DRayRaven

I have the nasty feeling this is going to pass.
I feel like Congress is voting YES to our children and their children’s children living in an economically stagnation and poverty. The Dem Party is destroying the middle class and creating a two-tiered system – the wealthy elite riding the backs of a poor and oppressed populace existing on scraps from a federal government that is going bankrupt under the crushing weight of debt, entitlement, and regulation.

For America, the best is OVER folks.
    It’s all downhill from here.

Actually, it was all downhill before this vote even happened. Obama and his socialist cohorts are stomping on the accelerator. Sadly, they are taking the rest of the world down with them. Goodbye, freedom and prosperity. The Chinese will run the new world order.

      • DRayRaven

        Bravo!!!
It’s easy to take cheap shots.

Take a good look at our national debt.
Then take a good look at our projected deficits.

Now – do you REALLY think the GOP (or anyone else) will ever commit themselves to doing what needs to be done to fix this? Do you really think Social Security will ever be seriously reformed and eventually eliminated? Do you really think Medicare will ever sent packing via privatization?

The minute the GOP tries, they’ll be tossed out of Washington on their ears and these whack-jobs on the left will have complete control again. I could see an eventual fair tax being passed into law, but that’s about it.

I hate to clue you in, but we’re in too much trouble to grow our way out of this debt. We’re in too deep. And the American people want it fixed, but they don’t want to give up their toys, either. Now this Obamacare boondolggle is throwing fuel on the fire.

Even worse, we’ve got clueless people over here on the right looking to progressive Republicans like Romney as their next leader. Jesus save me.

Whether it’s ten years from now or thirty years from now, America will NOT be the economic superpower we grew up in.

        • ocleverone
        • mavericktime

I agree that the country will not be the economic superpower that I grew up in. This just accelerates the decline.

        • conservativemusician

Other than venting, none of what you are saying here is going to make a difference because it is defeatist. I’ve grown tired of reading these types of posts from you and others like mavericktime. You are a classic example of the self-fulfilling prophecy and you seem to have resigned yourself that all is lost. Why even post at all if this is how you really feel? Well I for one don’t subscribe to this whining, self-absorbed pity party. Take it somewhere else. The lefty blogs are reading this stuff and laughing their butts off, so I am sure they would love to have this type of post come straight from the source even better.

Look. Everyone here knows the obstacles we face as a country, but this type of talk will not inspire anyone on our side to stand up on principle and take our country back. My suggestion to you is to take some time off from posting here for awhile or just sit back and listen to the wisdom of others before you post again. We all lose our way at times, so get some perspective.

As I said in an earlier post, the GOP leadership is finally stepping up to the plate and fighting for us and I say better late than never. Yes they have made mistakes that have been well-chronicled by Erick and many other posters here, so let’s not relive their past stupidity and lack of smarts in not seeing the Dems for the snakes they have always been. Instead of griping about what you think they are not doing, call them to encourage them in this fight. If you have constructive suggestions, give them. Otherwise, as the bible says in Proverbs, even a fool who keeps silent is considered wise.

Have a good night…and yes, Jesus saves. CM

This will lose in the courts of lose by passion and state’s rights. Regardless, it will fail in the end. Maybe not today – although I am not giving up yet – but if we have to take an MLK approach to nullificaton (non-violent passive agressive nullification) then enough states refusing ObamaCare can kill it. I have a diary with information on the topic and will be writing more as time goes by.

Think of David and Goliath. None of the Israelite’s would fight Goliath, but David saw Goliath from a different perspective. We must change our perspective and become an army of David’s. Like David, we must use the tools at our disposal, not slingshots – or guns – but our minds, our passion, and our resolve. This can be faught and the war can be won.

Do not despair or we will lose. It is not over is we lose the battle today. The war over our constitution and liberties has just began. I use the word war as a mental set of battles, not in the literal sense. Gird you loins. There is a realignment occuring and we are right in the middle of it. Lot’s of opportunity for us here.

We live in interesting times. Prepare your spirit, prepare your mind, FEEL the calm and work towards liberty in a deliberative manner. Battles will be lost, but we will win.

  • saltlick

For America, the best is OVER folks.
    It?s all downhill from here.

It’s definitely all downhill for quitters. They’ll live the rest of their lives knowing they abandoned the fight when things got tough. That kind of thing will eat away at our soul until the people at your funeral can hardly remember who you were.

    • DRayRaven

Take a look at the debt, genius.
Take a look at deficits projected over the next ten years – and then think about the fact that those obscene numbers are OPTIMISTIC.

I didn’t say anything about abandoning the fight, but I can look at facts and face reality. The left has flushed this county’s future down the crapper. And most people don’t even know it.

Oh, I forgot – Mitt Romney will save America.
      If not him, then Huckabee.
Yeah, right. Good luck with that.

I hope that gives you warm feelings when your job goes overseas.

          • ocleverone

I can assure you, my job will never go overseas.

And by the way, take a macroeconomics 101 class to learn about jobs heading overseas.

          • DRayRaven

Why won’t your job go overseas?
You must be a lawyer. There will be plenty of room for pond scum in the new economy. Hell, they got us into this mess in the first place. It’s no coincidence that most politicians are lawyers.

Oh, and by the way. I have forgotten more about economics than you will ever know. For example – I know that taxes and regulations have already made America an unfriendly place to do business. And Obama is making it worse. Once the inevitable consequences of monetizing our own debt begin to occur, it will get worse still.

Keep “fighting” (whatever that means) all you want. If you actually do know anything about macroeconomics, you’ll know the laws of economics can’t be abrogated. Sure, the effects can be delayed – but consequences inevitably occur. And we’re screwed.

I am not a political activist, but I, like a lot of others, am thoroughly distraught over the revolution that is being waged against America’s traditions and values. I have not involved myself until very recently, but will contribute steadily, reliably and resolutely for years, if necessary, to oppose this leftist revolution.

Hopefully soon opposition leaders will organize themselves, so that people like me can get behind them and support them,. Like any army, we need leadership, planning, and organization to identify and concentrate our forces on enemy weak points, and rally the common folk (like me).

The tea party movement is wonderful, but now, the way things look, we need something more focused and directed.

  • usedtobelib

I feel the same way. I really wish, however, that the GOP learns to speak the language of truth, to lay off platitudes and PC language. Reagan was able to talk of welfare queens and yes, he was pummeled by the Left, but he stood tall, didn’t waver, and the public voted for him because he spoke the truth, wasn’t afraid to confront it.

The welfare state we have created crosses all racial lines or perhaps I should say, it knows no race, no gender, no ethnicity. It robs initiative and exceptionalism. It destroys confidence and self-reliance. It produces the unproductive, the dependent.

There is nothing wrong with saying that vast numbers of us, people who dutifully go to work, support our children and nurture our families, are tired of giving housing vouchers, food vouchers, and now, health insurance vouchers to the slackers among us who have no intention of ever supporting themselves or their offspring. Failure to say this outright to a nation yearning to hear a politician who WILL say it, is one reason this mess will pass.
