Obama’s ‘Whistle-Stop’ Tour Warns of Challenges

While on his ‘Whistle-Stop’ tour, Obama addresses people along the same path Abraham Lincoln took, to voice challenges that his administration would face.

Historic in its own right, the path to the inauguration of Barack Obama echoes much the same path and content as that of President Abraham Lincoln. With a train ride to Washington D.C., to the very bible that Lincoln was sworn in on, Obama looks to mimic Lincoln in as many ways as he sees fit. Even to rhetorical quotes of the past, Obama reminds that:

They were willing to put all they were and all they had on the line – their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor – for a set of ideals that continue to light the world: That we are equal. That our rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness come not from our laws, but from our maker. And that a government of, by, and for the people can endure.”

The challenges Obama warns that the people must endure are that we will continue to face a troubled economy, and that we are still fighting two wars – one in Afghanistan, the other in Iraq that he plans to draw down and begin bringing troops home in the masses. As the country faces these huge challenges, the incoming White House press secretary says that all won’t be taken care of in week one or even month one. This comes as Obama says while in Philadelphia, “our problems may be new, what is required to overcome them is not.”

One problem he referenced was the already devastated economy. And, along with Congress, Obama is already working tirelessly on the passing of a gargantuan stimulus package that would cost $825 billion or more.

In a Fox News report, some goals Obama would like to have appear in the bill would include:

Doubling renewable energy production ($8 billion).

Making public buildings more energy-efficient ($31 billion).

Bringing high-speed Internet service to more communities and rural areas ($6 billion).

Extending health care subsidies for the recently unemployed under the COBRA program, and for former Medicaid recipients under programs such as TMA, or transitional medical assistance ($39 billion).

Extending supplemental grants for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families ($2.5 billion).

As Obama laid out these goals, incoming White House chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, said “we have got to invest in things that work in a different way.”

nor for his deep understanding of political thought.

After all, this is the fellow who said that we needed to bring back the habeas corpus rights that were given during the Nuremberg Trials. And the fellow who claimed that the world “stood as one” against communism. (These are two examples among many.)

No, he doesn’t appear capable of more than platitudes about our Founding, and, because he has insulated himself for years among hard leftists, his calls for renewal of our Founding end up sounding a lot more like calls for replacement of our Founding.

    Thanks all for your comments!

Cheetah, you hit it. If Obama really wanted to mimic Lincoln, he WOULD have to “change” himself. Lincoln was one of the Founders of the “Conservative Movement” in the US. Obama is the reverse. As Lincoln strived for a smaller less expensive government, Obama plans to expand and spend his way through the Presidency.

I “hope” a Republican Senator will get on the floor of the Senate and remind people what Lincoln was about, and then say they would welcome this “change” in Obama.

Census 2010……….. a.k.a. The Redistricting Of The USA to make each village, town, city, county and state bluer than someone at 100,000 ft. without any breathing/pressure gear.

The courts are going to be overrun with abjectly insane challenges and charges of racism, discrimination, etc.

Remember, folks, all The One needs right now is one more Supreme Court Judge on his side and the way-to-the-left-of-the-far-left has this country totally.

This idea of an ongoing Democratic majority is as wrong as the assumption by the Repubs in 94 that there would be a permanent Repub majority. You/me haven’t a clue what will happen in 2010, let alone later on. It depends, do we have another 9/11, do things go further in the crapper after all the bailouts, and the answers to that are …maybe. I know that if I were higher in the food chain, I’d say no to anything and everything remotely related to the bailouts. Take ownership of that now! Make it the leg you stand on in 2009. It is correct politically, correct morally, and correct practically. Folks here are underestimating just how unpopular this thing is across the board. Beyond that, wait, see, and organize.

All the way up until election day, we heard how Obama had a detailed plan for how to fix all of George Bush’s problems. As soon as the election was over he started backpedalling, saying he wants to hear from everyone to determine what plans are the best, don’t expect anything to get much better in the economy for a few years, we’ll be in Iraq a few years, Gitmo may stay open a few years, don’t ask don’t tell might go away in a few years, he’ll kinda sorta end torture in a few years, etc.

Midterm elections will be here before we know it, and in 2010 it’s hard to see voters falling for the “we need more time” argument. He’s got huge majorities in both houses, so he gets a free reign for all practical purposes to implement all his grand plans that he claimed were loaded with details.

But then again in 2010 we could have the Dems ripe for the picking and the GOP shooting themselves in the foot yet again.

I’m sorry, but I’m in mood to make some sacrastic remarks about the impending Obama presidency — you know the end of world stuff…

The One may not want a civil war, but he’s gonna get one if he keeps running down this Socialist nonsense and Congress actually starts passing laws taking away our rights, freedoms and sovereignty.

If Obama is going to mimic Lincoln, can’t he start with changing his party affliation to GOP? That would send a massive shockwave throughout Democratic Party and crashing liberal parties come Tuesday…
