I’m a pretty positive person by nature. I don’t think I would be a conservative it that weren’t so. I was more disappointed 2 years ago than I was last night. I figured that a Democrat would occupy the White House this term, but when the 2006 election happened we were facing a Democrat President and a Democrat Congress. Thankfully we will still hold the power to filibuster in the Senate, and the House losses weren’t as bad as I thought they were going to be.
We have a strong minority. Mitch McConnell didn’t get Daschled. Smith may yet hang on in Oregon. Norm in Minnesota. We picked up a few seats back in the House that we had lost in 2006 (TX-22 and FL-16).
With all that in mind I just want to say something. I plan on being the most patriotic American I can be over the next 4 years.
“Dissent is the highest form of patriotism.” – Howie Zinn.
“I’m sick and tired of people who say that if you debate and disagree with this administration, somehow you’re not patriotic. We need to stand up and say we’re Americans, and we have the right to debate and disagree with any administration.” – Hillary Clinton.
I’m not going to have ODS. However, I’m going to have fun with this.

Energy stocks fared pretty well.
Steve Maley (Diary) Wednesday, November 5th at 4:21PM EST (link)Oil went from $3.50 to $35 after the second embargo. Natural gas went from 20 cents to $2.00.
This all despite Nixon’s price controls and Carter’s Windfall Profits Tax. The more the government tried to repeal supply & demand, the better for the industry.
Not that I want it to happen, mid you. Those were challenging times. Only when Reagan decontrolled oil & gas prices did stability (and low prices) come back to the market.

You get a good sized dividend and a relatively safe sector.
If you have a longer time frame (10+ years) I would just be buying VTI (total stock market ETF) and trying to accumulate as many shares as I can.
Do your homework though, don’t just take my anonymous advice.

New memo from the Supreme Unicorn...
CSUFBomb (Diary) Wednesday, November 5th at 5:20PM EST (link)…as of Inauguration Day 2009, blind obeisance and genuflection will offically replace dissent as the highest form of patriotism.
Dissent will be considered just cause to elevate the offending party into a tax bracket high enough to cause tears of fairness to fall from the eyes of the poor, the downtrodden, and the perpetually unemployed.
