MEMBER DIARY

Michael Williams (R-TX) for Senate

Promoted from Diaries. – Moe Lane

I’ve been a big fan of Michael Williams’ for the last couple of years. I don’t quite remember how I, living in Oregon, came about knowing who the Chairman of the Texas Railroad Commission was, but I support him to replace Kay Bailey Hutchison as the Senator from the great state of Texas.

First, Hutchison is starting to set up a run for Governor:

Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison on Thursday took the first step toward her anticipated run for Texas governor, establishing an exploratory committee that will allow her to raise money for the 2010 campaign.

I suspect that she could knock off current governor Rick Perry in the Republican primary. What is not known is if she will resign her senate seat to do so. If she does, then a special election will be called.

Whether by appointment or by special election, I support Michael Williams for the seat.

I know what you’re thinking, Chairman of the Railroad Commission??? The title is a little misleading, the Texas Railroad Commission is actually an energy commission (dropping rail oversight in 2005, but not changing the name), and the commissioners are elected statewide:

The Railroad Commission of Texas is the state agency that regulates the oil and gas industry, gas utilities, pipeline safety, safety in the liquefied petroleum gas industry, and surface coal and uranium mining. Established by the Texas Legislature in 1891, the commission is the state’s oldest regulatory agency.

He was first elected in 2000 to fill out the final 2 years of a 6 year term, reelected in 2002 to a full term and then reelected this year for another 6 years. He’s conservative (all three legs), he’s well spoken and a proud, outspoken Reagan conservative. He addressed the Republican convention this year, but I give you the video of his address to the Texas State Republican Convention:

I’m pretty sure that after you watch the video, that should Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison either step down to run, or become governor, you’d join me in supporting Michael Williams for Texas Senator .

He’s a true conservative star in TX and we need more like him in DC!

All I can say is NO. I will not vote for her in a primary or general election for governor, no matter whom she is running against. I will do what I can to see her defeated.

Why couldn’t Dan Patrick have formed an exploratory committee? Where is he?

I have to ask and I am prepared to face the barrage

Hutchinson has been a very reliable Republican vote in Senate so why the hate? What issue do Conservatives really disagree with her on?

    • SgtKirk

My problems with her come from two areas. First she is pro-choice, and second she is very weak on illegal immigration. She is good on gun rights and and is very pro-military though.

I’m floored. I’ve never heard of Michael Williams. All I know about him is this video, but if it’s even close to “who he is” Michael Williams is a treasure.

I absolutely love him thanking Obama for opening up “wider possibilities…”

My only concern about Michael Williams is the idea of wasting him in the Senate, but if that’s the best job we can find for him right now we should recall KBH.

…we’re going to want to elect as many people with heavy energy chops in Congress in ’10 as we can.

  • maddog

He’d be good, too. Great Congressman. No RINO. He was E.D. of NRSC when Gramm was chair in 1991-92 cycle so he knows the Senate camapign process

Mr. Williams is a tried and true conservative and is all about “Drill, Baby, Drill!!” He ran some good ads this year for re-election, and won handily. I, as a Texan, will definitely consider him for Senator if he chooses to run. The only person I would choose above him right now would be Rep. Gohmert. But this all depends on whether Kay Bailey can beat Perry in the Primary. Perry isn’t the most popular Governor, but Hutchison has some problems too.

  • Darin_H

so I can’t speak intelligently about him. One of the things I like about Chairman Williams is that he has won statewide office more than once already (though that may be less necessary in red Texas).

  • AceInTX

but if making her Governor would give us a Senator Williams in DC…Bring on Governor Hutchinson!

  • SgtKirk

Gohmert is the one that is trying to put through the plan to give a two month income and payroll tax holiday in January and February.

  • SgtKirk

We can do better that Kay Bailey and Perry.

  • TxCon

I trade Hutichison for perry if it gets us Williams in the Senate. 10 years is to long to be in the governors mansion and I’m worried voters may feel the same if Slick Rick is on the ballot.

  • SgtKirk

I could put up with Hutchison as Governor if it gets us true Conservative representation in the Senate.

    I’ve long been a fan.
