Around the U.S. in 50 Days: Nevada

This is the thing that bothers me about the this idea of pre-clearance under the Voter’s Rights Act and all that. Well, actually three things bother me about it. First, this law was enacted in 1965 during a very different time in our history. I am not saying that racial prejudice or racism in general has been eradicated. However, the government has basically tried and | Read More »
Around the U.S. in 50 Days: Oregon

First things first. Before discussing the general election in November 2012, there is a special election to fill the term of David “Tigerboy” Wu in the 1st Congressional District. Many, usually those on the Left, have pointed to this race, like every other special election held thus far usually in response to a resignation over some sex-related scandal, a bellweather for the November elections. Around the U.S. in 50 Days: Utah
By: davenj1 (Diary) | January 4th at 08:55 AM |
In Utah, besides the Presidential election, there are two statewide races: Governor and Senate. Given his popularity and the fact that Utah is staunchly conservative and decidedly red, there is little drama in the Governor’s race as incumbent Republican Guy Herbert should win easily. The only chance the Democrats have of winning is if Joseph Smith ran on their ticket. At the present time, there | Read More »
Around the U.S. in 50 Days: Montana
By: davenj1 (Diary) | January 3rd at 09:23 AM |
The 2012 elections in Montana will be closely watched and may determine the balance of power in the Senate. All three races are statewide in nature: Governor, at large House seat, and Senate. Starting with the at-large seat, current Republican incumbent Denny Rehberg is leaving his job to challenge Jon Tester for his Senate seat thus producing an open race. Thus far, the best Republican | Read More »
Around the U.S. in 50 Days: Idaho and Wyoming
By: davenj1 (Diary) | January 2nd at 07:17 AM |
Why two states in one day? Two reasons: both are no-brainers and some states like California, Texas and Illinois might require a two day analysis. So, this will be a fairly quick entry that involves two Republican strongholds. In Idaho, only the two incumbent Congressmen are up for re-election. They are Raul Labrador (what? A Hispanic Republican?) and Mike Simpson. Redistricting has not greatly affected | Read More »
Around the U.S. in 50 Days: Washington
By: davenj1 (Diary) | January 1st at 10:08 AM |
The political situation in Washington will be well-watched in 2012. Considered safely blue by most pundits, a large portion of the population lives in the Seattle/Tacoma area and Democrats hold a decided advantage in this region. Once out of the area, however, the population is less sparse, more conservative and more Republican. Still, Washington’s 12 electoral votes will go to Obama continuing a trend that | Read More »
Around the US in 50 Days: Alaska
By: davenj1 (Diary) | December 31st at 08:13 AM |
Just as Hawaii will be a slam dunk for Obama, Alaska will be a slam dunk for the eventual Republican nominee. Alaska is a fairly reliable red state and its three electoral votes will go to the GOP. The running count thus far is Obama 4, GOP nominee 3. Unlike 2010, there is no Senatorial drama this time around. If one remembers, incumbent GOP Lisa | Read More »
Around the US in 50 Days: Hawaii
By: davenj1 (Diary) | December 30th at 08:45 AM |
In Presidential politics, there is no doubt that Barack Obama, who lays claim to Hawaii asa one of his homes, will garner the state’s four electoral votes. The state is deeply blue as evidenced by their recent voting behaviors in Presidential elections and the fact their entire Congressional delegation is Democratic, along with their Governor. The Senate race will be spotlighted this year since long | Read More »
Roberts vs. Obama and Holder: Round 3- Arizona
By: davenj1 (Diary) | December 28th at 09:22 AM |
As expected, the Supreme Court has decided to weigh in on Arizona’s illegal immigration law- SB 1070. As most are aware, the law was signed into effect by Governor Jan Brewer and was immediately challenged in federal court by Holder’s Justice Department. The District Court then issued an injunction against certain sections of the law and the very liberal Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals has | Read More »
Roberts vs. Obama and Holder: Round 2- Obamacare
By: davenj1 (Diary) | December 22nd at 02:46 PM |
The single act that broke the camel’s back and galvanized the Tea Party into electoral action was the passage of the Affordable Care Act, more commonly known as Obamacare. Some in the Democratic Party have objected to the term “Obamacare” as being derogatory. However, if you want to lay claim to it as your signature piece of legislation, it is quite hypocritical for your Party | Read More »
