Electoral Reform- Part 6: Redistricting

The Constitution requires that every ten years, the country must conduct a census of its population. In the most recent census, several of my more conservative friends believed this to be some liberal conspiracy of varying sorts and asserted their intention not to return their census form. Of course, they do so at their own political peril. The purpose is to first determine the number | Read More »

The Disturbing Trend Series- Part 3:The Voting Rights Act of 1965 Penalizes for the Sins of the Past

Recent reports out of some websites indicate that the Justice Department under Eric Holder and Barack Obama is under orders to vigorously defend the Voting Rights Act of 1965 from challenges. This extends from redistricting considerations to voter ID laws, especially the latter. The ostensible reason behind their opposition to voter ID laws is that they disenfranchise minorities, students, and seniors. Voter ID laws per | Read More »

The Battle For the House 2012: An Early Take

To hear Nancy Pelosi talk, she will again be Speaker of the House in 2013 after the 2012 election results are in. Rep. Steven Israel (D-NY) notes that gaining leadership of the House is certainly within range and there is a grain of truth to that statement, although somewhat unrealistic. Pelosi and Israel constantly note that the Democrats merely need to win a net total | Read More »

The Supreme Court and Three Cases They Decided Not To Take On

On Monday March 19, the Supreme Court denied three cases of interest- two involving religion in the abstract and another involving reapportionment and the census. The latter is a case being pursued by the state of Louisiana which seeks to invalidate the 2010 Census results. They claim that is inherently unfair and unconstitutional to count illegal immigrants as part of the population for reapportionment purposes. | Read More »

Around the U.S. in 50 Days: Florida, part 2

A lot has been written in the conservative blogosphere about redistricting in Florida, most of it conspiratorial regarding the 22nd District represented by Alan West. To summarize, many believe that the House redistricting chair Will Weatherford is deliberately screwing West because he is a Romney supporter. In actuality, Weatherford originally endorsed Pawlenty and switched to Romney when Pawlenty dropped out. Additionally, Florida picks up two | Read More »

Around the U.S. in 50 Days: Texas, Part 1

Texas gains four seats in the House bringing their total to 36 (and thus 4 electoral votes raising the total to 38). With approval ratings consistently well below the national average, Obama stands little to no chance of winning their 38 electoral votes. Additionally, some of these votes come at the expense of states that Obama carried in 2008: Ohio and New York (2 apiece), | Read More »

Around the U.S. in 50 Days: California

Redistricting in California is simply a mess. As some left leaning publications have reported, the Democratic Party gamed the allegedly non-partisan redistricting commission while the inept California GOP fell asleep at the wheel and got taken to the cleaners. Perhaps this is a hard lesson learned for California Republicans, but one that may very well undercut the gains made in 2010 and hurt the GOP | Read More »

Roberts vs. Obama & Holder: Round 1

While we are concentrating on the GOP nomination battle and all that entails and the drama towards the big prize in 2012, the Supreme Court has taken on a trio of cases that are highly politically charged that may have more far-reaching effects than who wins in 2012. In the first match up, Justice Scalia has accepted and placed on the docket a case involving | Read More »

    The Other Midterm Concerns

The census is being completed and this sets up the next, possibly more important battle in politics in 2011.  As everyone is aware, despite the advertisements about steering federal dollars your way, the census is mandated by the Constitution.  It is determine the population of states for representation in Congress.  Additionally, under our electoral system, it determines the number of electoral votes each state receives | Read More »
