Mitch McConnell wants to tax pain

Sen. Mitch McConnell has asked the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to consider pulling cheaper generic versions of some pain medicines off the market before they become available to consumers in 2013.

The controversy involves release of prescription opiates in generic form lacking a tamper-resistant feature intended to prevent some abuse of brand name drugs like Oxycontin.

The very best possible outcome of this action is increasing costs for innocent pain sufferers, while the state of Kentucky is already under a severe pain medicine crackdown responsible for a surge in heroin use. The war on drugs has been a particularly expensive failure for Kentucky. This kind of nonsense is good for press releases, but not constituents.

At least he has a decent reason. Drug abuse is something we should try to be consistent on.

But, eh, doesn’t that prove “if you tax something, you get less of it” false? :P

Persisting with the status quo on our drug policy in the name of consistency reminds me a lot of Obama’s campaign threat: “Forward!” Off the cliff…

Nah, I’d prefer if it were on the state and local level, but Washington politicians would never have that, so they might as well try doing what they want to do well.

All kinds of evil and harm are done by people who have ‘a decent reason’.

People should go kick Mitch McConnell in the knee then deny him any and all pain medicine.

Nothing like creating a shortage of pain relievers to justify a campaign for more government regulation of pharmacy companies. Wait – this is a conservative Republican going down this path? Did I fall down the rabbit hole?
