MEMBER DIARY

First Palin, then Angle, Now O’Donnell

If you are a conservative woman who has the audacity to seek public office, be warned. You will be held to a higher standard than your male counterparts. You will be ridiculed by both Republicans and Democrats. You will be scrutinized by the media to an extent usually reserved for celebrities who are being stalked by paparazzi.Case in point:the journalist who actually moved to Alaska and rented the house next door to Governor Sarah Palin last summer. What is it about these conservative women that creates such angst? From Olbermann to Maddow, from Rove to Krauthammer, the reaction is apoplectic.

Adjectives such as“inexperienced,” “incompetent,” and “dishonest” are thrown at these women as soon as they enter the national spotlight. The intellectual elite paint them as crazy, right-wing nuts, especially if, heaven forbid, they are Christians. If they win an unwinnable election, the establishment calls it a fluke. (Republican Congressman Mike Castle has yet to call and congratulate Christine O’Donnell.)Their hairstyles and wardrobes are ridiculed; their personal lives are put under a microscope. Obviously, the conventional wisdom goes, they did not deserve to win.Undoubtedly, the pundits warn, they will cause Republicans to lose in November.

In an era in which our Vice President is more famous for his gaffes than his accomplishments, Congressman Charlie Rangel wins reelection despite a pending ethics trial, and Americans elect a community organizer to be President, the double standard for conservative women candidates is not only undeniable, it’s glaring. And disappointing.

Sure, politics has always been a good ‘ole boys club. But these courageous women, who ignore the naysayers and fight the good fight, are not a fluke. They are conservative heroines who deserve our admiration and support. As Senator Jim DeMint said, “I’ve been in the majority with Republicans who didn’t have principles, and we embarrassed ourselves and lost credibility in front of the country. Frankly, I’m at a point where I’d rather lose fighting for the right cause than win fighting for the wrong cause.”This conservative woman agrees.

She has lied … specifically about graduating from college and some other things.

And it’s not just people complaining about these three … Maes who is very male is getting ripped a new one in Colorado as well for lies.

wrong side of the tracks. People all over town are saying unflattering things about her. Sadly the things they are saying are true, but your brother married her anyway, and is not about to dissolve the union.

Your family is eligible for membership at the town’s best golf club. There is one space open, and you are competing against a family full of jerks who hate your guts and cheat at golf. Your new sister-in-law’s bad reputation is putting your family’s chances for getting that coveted space in jeopardy.

What are you going to do?
      1. Keep your head down and hope for the best?
      2. Promise the membership board that you will keep the little vixen in line?
      3. Demonstrate how every member of the competition jerk family is less worthy of the position than your sister-in-law?
      4. Do some mental gymnastics to make apologetic arguments in favor of your brother’s wife’s character?
      5. Remind people who seem to like her how hopelessly flawed she is?

I recommend #3. A good offense is the best defense.

That’s fair. This article, and many conservatives (not you, to my knowledge), seem to be doing #4, which I for the life of me cannot understand.

I was an apologist for all things Republican in 2008, except for Sen. Stevens.

I won’t take part in apologetics this year, but after the dismissal of the Stevens guilty verdict, I don’t have a problem with others coming up with extenuating explanations in support of Miss O’Donnell.

(And if you want, I can tell you my football picks so that you can choose the opposing teams : ) )

It doesn’t bother me when people acknowledge what they are doing (which is what you did here). It is troublesome when people do #4 or #3, believe their own propaganda, and then call you the flawed conservative for not detaching yourself from reality (which you have not done, but which others, unfortunately, have felt that they had to do). In the analogy you used, it would be as if you tried to convince your mom and dad (who are on your side and know your sister-in-law’s flaws) that your sister-in-law is perfect for brother, the best thing since sliced bread, etc, and going on a tirade against them when they, concerned, try to ground you in reality.

O’Donnell may not be perfect (who is) but she won the primary and she’s now our devil.
Castle and Murkowski should be deluged with mail urging them to get on board, the ethical and moral action to take.

I agree completely with the Diarist. There is nothing wrong with Christine O’Donnell’s character, Mike Castle negative TV ads and pro-Castle articles notwithstanding, she has extremely high character. The reason she hadn’t ‘officially’ graduated from the college was due to a financial issue, she hadn’t been able to pay all her bills. That’s because unlike Castle she isn’t a limosine liberal, she’s just a normal human being. This isn’t a Blumenthal situation, its a ‘throw mud at the opponent because my candidate is a super-liberal and I cant talk issues without going down further in the polls’ situation. For those who believe that not being rich is a character deficiency in and of itself, then yes Christine is guilty. But for the rest of us, we know what its like to have money problems, and we know that in no way makes you a bad person. Quite frankly Christine O’Donnell’s character is FAR greater than Mike Castle’s, you just have to witness his post-Primary behavior to see that. But I’d like to think that the sore losers in Castle’s camp could move on and stop spreading lies about her. Of course we see that Rove and a few others have not, but it would be appreciated if they could get over being ‘beaten by a girl’, and do what’s right and support her as the nominee of the Party. That’d be swell.
