The Left’s War on Food for Poor Continues

As we observe the efforts of the left to drive up the cost of food, there is no wonder why so many people are having trouble feeding their families.  Their policies mandating the use of corn as fuel, as well as the inflationary aspects of the Fed’s recent QE2 policies, have kept the cost of food high for a long time.  Now, Obama’s EPA is working on a proposal to increase the percentage of ethanol in gasoline from 10% to 15%.  What about its effect on food prices?  Let them use food stamps, says Obama’s government.

It’s ironic that the government plans to augment ethanol mandates even as poor and developing countries are facing skyrocketing food prices.  There is no doubt that ethanol is one of the culprits behind the economic upheaval that led to the political turmoil in Egypt.  Egypt has to import most of their wheat, and with grain-based commodities rising as a result of increased ethanol production, Egyptians simply cannot afford a loaf of bread.  Almost 40% of corn produced in the U.S. is used for this substandard fuel, yet it is still not enough of a poverty enhancer for the left.  Yes, the very same left that purports to care about the impoverished and the third world.

In addition to its disastrous effects on the food supply, this decision could turn out to be dangerous for motorists.  Higher bio-fuel blends have already been tested and have shown a propensity to melt the gas pumps and storage tanks!  Furthermore, even the EPA has come out with a long report detailing the negative environmental effects that ethanol production has on the water and soil.  So, we have a situation in which mandates, tariffs, and tax credits enrich the government/corporate complex, while driving up the cost of fuel and food on the poor and actually harming the environment.  Who are the ones to care for the poor and the environment again?

Meanwhile, potential presidential candidate Newt Gingrich gave a speech defending ethanol in…Iowa! (The WSJ has a great write-up on Newt’s corn boondoggle here.) He can join Senator John Thune as a presidential candidate who is willing to peddle corporate cronyism in order to win Iowa.

It seems that most reps (regardless of party) from corn producing areas and presidential candidates (who need to pander to Iowa due to our stupid primary system) support ethanol subsidies and mandates. The lunacy of ethanol is such that it needs BOTH a gigantic subsidy AND a mandate of its use in order to be profitable (and it isn’t even that profitable then). It may be time to force our reps to sign a no support for ethanol pledge much like they sign a no tax increase pledge.

subsidies that have been paying people not to grow and to destroy food since FDR.

Go car shopping and ask about it. Most manufacturers are telling customers that ethanol in excess of 10% will damage engines in newer cars.

I’m a farmer, dammit, and I have seen the way Iowa farmers plant corn rows going straight up and down hillsides — not even planted on the contour, much less with any terraces!!

Iowa farmers should come visit Kansas, where we at least TRY to not ship all our topsoil down to the Gulf of Mexico.

I know I’m setting myself up for a hatefest here — bring it on, Iowans — but your grandchildren will curse you for eroding away all that topsoil that they will need for growing their OWN food!

And the fact that so much of this waste and ecocide is done for the sake of …. ETHANOL? Ethanol — which doesn’t even YIELD as much energy as it takes to grow it and process it! In other words, we are SPENDING fossil fuel to produce a substance that doesn’t even net us any energy on the other end!

THAT I blame on the federal government, and the way it lets ADM lead it around by the nose. And, hey, Iowans, I know you guys are just trying to get by, and feed your families and pay your bills, and we all get forced into doing things we know are bad practices because of federal farm policy. Here in Kansas, while we may do a little better with soil conservation, we are irresponsibly draining the biggest deep aquifer in America, the Ogallala aquifer, to irrigate that same damn crop, corn, one of the thirstiest crops there is — and one of the most fertilizer-and-pesticide-intensive, too (so we get nitrates in the groundwater, and atrazine in the rivers!)

It’s up to us farmers to show up at our Congresspeople’s town hall meetings and let them know that WE do NOT support these insane policies. THEY think we’re just out for ourselves, and that we WANT ethanol. They won’t know otherwise unless we tell them in no uncertain terms that we know that it’s nothing but a scam to benefit ADM, and we want no more of this insanity.

…because this is a HUGELY important topic!

We’ve simply got to stop the ethanol scam. When even Al Gore admits ethanol’s a bad idea, you KNOW you’re chasing unicorns!

I think the key will be getting everybody in the Midwest (read: Corn Belt) to stand up against the lunacy. As I implied in comment above, farmers go along with it because the govt. more or less forces them into it. When farmers themselves start rising up against it, we might make some progress.

right now and really since the late 60s.

See John McWhorter on how LBJ adopted the failed NY state system that kicked the man out the house and made Uncle Sam daddy.

They advocate known failed policies for 40 years, yet they say conservatives and republicans “don’t care”?

One of my main themes since converting the the GOP 10 years ago is how the fact that I care about the poor and lower income families defines a main reason I came to the GOP: Reagan policies work!

I don’t know who you actually are, but coincidentally, another major aspect to my strategy and why this diary is so great is that I agree with David Horowitz (who i interviewed in ATL in 2003) in his “How to beat the democrats” chapter of his book Left Illusions..

The GOP needs to play the moral card and embrace the undedogs in American politics.

If Republicans will get out there and argue using facts — SHOW how Dem policies have kept poor people, esp. blacks, ON THE PLANTATION, and how Rep policies give people a chance to get out of poverty — and let real, live, living success stories such as Star Parker make the case…

we can claim the moral high ground we deserve, and start winning what should be the natural constituencies of the party of Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King!

        Hey guys,

I’ve been away the past view days and I still need to review the discussion already in progress. I just wanted to clear up one thing. I’m Daniel Horowitz, but I do admire much of David’s prolific work. To my knowledge, I am not related.
