“I’m Moderate David Dewhurst, and I Approve this Message”

It’s game time for the conservative movement.  With the Wisconsin recall fizzling out by the day, it appears that the runoff between Dewhurst and Cruz will be the most important battle for conservatives this year.  We must not sit this one out!

Last night Dewhurst won by just 10.4 points, despite enjoying a bigger lead in the polls throughout the entire duration of the campaign.  He garnered 44.6% to Cruz’s 34.2%.  There will be a runoff July 31, which gives us plenty of time to make up the margin.

I noticed that many supporters and detractors of Cruz expressed their surprise over the fact that Dewhurst still won by 10 points.  After all, they contended, if Cruz is such an attractive candidate, why didn’t he come out on top?  How is he going to make up the margin in the runoff?

There are a few points to consider.  First, although Cruz is a household name among conservative activists, he was an unknown quantity to most voters, even Republican primary voters.  That’s why he was polling in the single digits for a long time.  Dewhurst, on the other hand, is the sitting Lt. Governor for a decade who has full name recognition and the backing of the entire establishment, not to mention Rick Perry.  He has unlimited personal wealth to go up on the air and distort his record and the record of his opponent.  Ted Cruz has made steady progress throughout the campaign, and last night’s results reflect that upward trajectory.  The votes cast on election day itself split  41.4% for Dewhurst and 38.1% for Cruz.

More importantly, we must remember that moderate Republicans never run as moderates anymore, at least not in the primaries.  While it is patently obvious to those of us in the field that Cruz is a conservative star and that Dewhurst helped grow government in the Texas legislature, that is not necessarily the narrative that is communicated to the majority of voters.  In fact, Dewhurst has used all his money to evince a conservative image while painting Cruz as a pro-amnesty China-loving pinko liberal!  Fred Upton is doing the same in Michigan, as he sends out think mailers every week painting his conservative challenger as a tax and spend liberal.

I love how establishment pundits make snarky comments about our candidates whenever the moderate Republicans do well in elections.  They view the results as a vindication of their belief that our “extreme” candidates cannot win at the ballot box.  The problem is that these guys never run as moderates.  Far from it, they actually attempt to outflank the conservative challenger on the right.  I doubt that most of the voters who selected Dewhurst would tell you something like this: “You know what?  We need more moderates like Dewhurst who will vote alongside Mitch McConnell.”  In fact, Dewhurst rolled up some of his widest margins in some of the most conservative counties in the country.

Unfortunately, Dewhurst will continue his campaign of deception throughout the next two months.  He’ll have millions of dollars to spend on TV ads running to the right of Cruz.  You’ll never hear an ad from him with the following disclaimer: “I’m David Dewhurst, moderate from Texas, and I’m running for Senate because we need more moderates who will stand with Mitch McConnell against extremists like Cruz and DeMint.”  Candidates that have chosen that strategy, like Dick Lugar and Bob Bennett, lost in a landslide.

Fortunately, Dewhurst’s TV ads are not enough to carry the day for him on July 31.  In a low-turnout runoff election, everything hinges on the most dedicated, high-intensity voters.  We can overcome Dewhurst’s inherent advantage by building a ground game second to none in an effort to turnout all the devoted Republican voters.  There is no question that the use of “Gravity” in the field for Cruz was a serious asset, and it will play a larger role in the runoff.  We all need to pitch in to help the Cruz campaign with the GOTV effort for the next two months.  But he will still need more donations to help cut Dewhurst’s advantage over the airwaves.

This election, especially in a state like Texas, is too important to lose.  As Senator DeMint said last night, “a Republican majority is pointless if it isn’t achieved with conservatives who will fight to stop the spending and debt.”  Let’s win one more for the Gipper!

Texas conservatives need to understand just how dishonest Dewhurst’s campaign is.

Ted Cruz is THE choice for Texas Conservatives!

even cutting $10 million in 2003 and $15 million in 2011.

As a very Conservative activist in Texas who has seen Dewhurst in action, I can testify that the Lt. Governor is Conservative and gets results. DOMA, Voter ID, Tort Reform, a 1/3 cut in property taxes, and defunding Planned Parenthood are not “moderate.”

Texas Right to Life is supporting Dewhurst for his Pro-Life record.

BUT, Dewhurst did stand in the way of the TSA bill and the sanctuary cities bill making it to the floor during the last session.

It may not be black and white to most people. Cruz has some distinctions to make about himself. But the nasty tone of Dewhurst’s adds have turned off a lot of folks I’ve talked to. It will be interesting…

      • http://wingright.org bnuckols

at different times, but the problem was more along the lines of coordination with the House. In the Special Session, the TSA bill was passed along with the budget and a landmark omnibus medical finance bill. The budget would have passed in the Regular Session if it hadn’t come down to the midnight filibuster by the Dems.

The 82nd Legislature was incredibly effective, banning drivers licenses for illegals, getting Voter ID,

In fact, the TSA Bill was an example of the power of Dewhurst. He is said to have “twisted arms,” along with the Governor Perry, to get the vote to the floor, even going so far as to try to “suspend the rules” to bring it up out of order. The Dems block voted to prevent the 2/3 vote necessary. All Republicans voted for it.

How can Dewhurst be called a moderate, yet Gov. Perry is a conservative? Gov. Perry and Lt. Gov. Dewhurst share the same record since in order for Perry to sign something into law it has to go through Dewhurst first, right? If not, what exactly do the Lt. Gov. do? I’m confused.

    • thx1138v2

Look at Perry’s record in office. Not just a subject or two but his entire voting record, and you will see a pattern and the pattern is Progressive. He says one thing and does another.

You are correct about the relationship between the Gov. and the Lt. Gov. There’s nothing to be confused about. They are the same thing but they just changed the terminology to suit the audience. Perru didn’t get anywhere running as a conservative so Dewhurst will try some other lable.

      • windwaker24

their records cannot be bad. We’ll agree to disagree about Perry. I believe he is Conservative and a man of his word. I wish more governors were like him.

  • thx1138v2

The left in this country has gone so far left that the vaunted “center” is now between communism and socialism. That makes even the traditional liberal a right winger. It’s gotten so bad that Hugo Chavez considers Fidel Castro to be to the right of our president.

Anyone running under the banner of a “moderate” in the Republican Party is no more than a Progressive plant. If the Progressives can have both canidates in the Republican and Democratic races, they win no matter which political party wins. That, to a large extent, is what has gotten us to where we are today which is further from a Constitutional Republic than ever before.

If conservatives don’t make a stand now, there will not be another chance.

    • http://wingright.org bnuckols

As a moderate. Those who oppose him make those claims. As above, the accomplishments of the State of Texas and the Senate of Texas are outstanding, not moderate.

      • anonymousbosch

If Dewhust is such a strong conservative and has done all these great things for Texas, why would they want to lose him to become an irrelevant and meaningless Junior Senator?

According to you he’s been effective and instrumental in so many things that it would seem to me that Texas should want to keep him where he is and set him up to take over for Perry and continue the conservative direction.

If he goes to DC he’ll be one of 100 Senators. As a Jr Senator he’ll have little power or influence. No chairmanships. No nothing. He’ll be almost 70 when he takes office and almost 75 by his 2nd term. He’s not long for the Senate.

Cruz, otoh, is young. He can grow and position himself nicely to contribute and make a difference. We primary Cornyn in 2014 and all of a sudden Cruz is the Sr Senator with much more power.

Cruz helps the party by adding another rising hispanic star to a roster that includes younger hispanics like Martinez, Rubio, Herrera, Sandoval and some others. Another almost 70 yr old rich white guy doesn’t really do anything on that front.

Cruz would also gain valuable esperience for a potential Supreme Court appointment.

Seems to me TX can really have the best of both worlds here. They keep tthier strong conservative LT Gov in Austin where he continues to work with Perry in growing the economy, adding jobs, and moving the state in a conservative direction in preparation for running for Gov on his own…and they send a younger, strong conservative to DC where he learn the ropes and work with guys like DeMint, Lee, and Rubio in rejuvenating the GOP Senate caucus and fixing things from the inside. Everyone wins in that scenario.

Heather Wilson in NM we have a solid conservative candidate Greg Sowards, who Rand Paul has endorsed. We cannot let this one get away.

      That’s the problem.

until the votes are cast. But the fear of losing is never a valid reason to do the wrong thing or keep the wrong person in office. Republicans are nearing a point where if there is not a clear distinction between them and the dems, our party will fade away in most of the country. People are fed up with being fed BS and being told it is a steak. In their opinion, if we are going to sink, may as well go with the party who openly spends and promises all a part of the pie.

We need quality over quantity and that will lead to us taking power for a long time.

stopping a RINO there may be a pyrrhic victory.

Wish I was wrong … but OTOH the Democrats in Texas havent won statewide this century, and wont this year.

That means Ted Cruz can be our next Senator if he survives the runoff.

I don’t have the demographics in front of me, but .. I suspect they’re getting bluer due to blue-hair and other immigrants from the east and west coasts….

Should have stayed to run for the Senate rather than burning bridges with conservatives.

you’ll only change my mind on this if/when Romney actually wins it in Nov.

Logic has it that Dewhurst?s lead is too big to overcome, but 2 months can be an eternity in politics. Despite being not near as well known as Dewhurst,Cruz came within 3 points of him on election day votes. I believe the fertile field for Cruz will be those who voted for Dewhurst by habit, not by conviction. For every vote switched, Cruz gains 2.He should go after the Dewhurst voters who mistakingly believe that the Lt. Gov. is a conservative.
The 31st of July is a very hot day in Texas. People who are not really motivated may stay home or go to the beach.
    Go get ?m, Ted !!!

    • http://travismonitor.blogspot.com Freedoms Truth

In early voting, Dewhurst led by 17 points.
On election day, it was only 6 points!

As more people realize that Dewhurst attacks ads were a bunch of lies, they will lose their bite and the simple question – “Who would make the better conservative?” – would be answered … TED CRUZ.

  • msctex

. . .can be argued all day, and have been above. But make no mistake about it: he ran this initial race against Cruz like a dyed-in-the-wool Democrat, being perfectly willing to bend or ignore the truth wherever it either served his purposes or — more to the point — obscured his own weaknesses.

    • http://www.hakubi.us/ Neil Stevens

He’s run the Senate for years, and just look at the results.

      • texashistorian

there is no debate regarding Dewhurst, but he did as well as he did because of name recognition alone. Because Texas overall does well as a red state, Dewie gets credit. It’s not hard to assign him the credit when you stack Texas up against California or Massachusetts. We that follow state politics closely know better: he and Speaker Joe Straus are cut from the same moderate cloth. Cruz’s challenge will be to force run-off voters to look more closely at Dewhurst and not simply cast a vote for him because he’s a long time Lt. Governor.

  • abeldred

isn’t his lack of Conservative credentials on the whole. He believes in things we all do like the right to life. However, he is a long (long, long, did I say long) time politician for starters. And he tends to be one of those “go along to get along” kind of guys. The last thing we need is yet another one of those in DC. He has been a member of the “boys” club in the TX Senate for a long time as well and he will take that mentality with him. He is not one who is ready to do battle for the people’s concerns as was evidenced in the last Legislative session when he chickened out in the ace of Federal threats when we tried to pass a TSA Anti-Groping bill. It sailed thru the house and was held up in the Senate. It was only in the special session, forced by Gov. Perry, that DD brought the watered down version to the floor and it passed. By then, however, it was much too late to get it thru the House (and Spkr Straus didn’t give it any effort…another story), so it failed. Thanks Dewhurst.
Dewhurst blocked sanctuary city legislation in the Senate and a slew of other important Conservative bills from the House. He did us no favors and just played good ol boy. He will NOT serve the people, he has proven he has no regard for the people by his total disregard for almost every forum, debate etc. throughout this process. NO! We can do far better with a man like Ted Cruz. I hope many in the GOP will see this as we move forward over the next 2 months. We need recruits! We need boots on the ground! We need financial support! I hope we can count on folks all over this great nation to put him over the top!

It is astonishing to listen to out of state conservatives bang on Dewhurst for being “moderate”. Erickson and other Red Staters are blowing hot air when they accuse Dewhurst of supporting a state income tax and favoring in state tuition for the children of illegal immigrants [Mexicans]. Dewhurst wasn’t even in the legislature when that bill was passed for Pete’s sake.
Granted, Dewhurst’s ads linking Cruz to the Chinese and amnesty are yucky but the fact remains; Ted was more than willing to represent a Chinese company [and yes he was involved directly in the litigation] and we all know that Ted knows that means representing the Communist Party of China. Cruz has also been more than a little shifty in the way he’s portrayed his Dad as a refugee from Cuba. His ads and some of his public endorsers have certainly lead us to believe his Dad fled communism while in reality his Dad was exiled by the Battista regime for engaging in violence in support of Castro.
This whole fight is more of a fiasco than a principled stand for individual liberrty, states rights and limited government . Dewhurst isn’t perfect but he sure as heck isn’t Dick Luger; something I wish well intentioned national conservatives and Tea Partyers would figure out before they start shooting their own people.
