Eric Hovde’s Fuzzy Memory Regarding His Donation to Doyle

There is a sad reality we must confront.  We have less than 10 reliable conservatives in the Senate.  If we ever hope to improve our fortunes in the “House of Lords,” we cannot become complacent and squander even a single opportunity to grow our numbers.  We’ve enjoyed successes in Texas and Indiana this year, as well as Nebraska (to a certain extent).  The next battle is in just 6 days when we will have the opportunity to add Mark Neumann to the DeMint caucus in the Senate.

As Erick noted yesterday, it’s time to discard the sense of ambivalence in the race between Mark Neumann and Eric Hovde.  In recent months, it appeared that Hovde was the only horse to ride in order to save us from Tommy Thompson.  However, the latest polls show Hovde stalling and Neumann surging, especially among Tea Party voters.  Now is the time to go with the man who has a solid conservative voting record as oppose to a blank slate who has donated money to a leftist governor.

Erick has already detailed Hovde’s willingness to pay higher taxes and his support for green energy, bailouts, and stimulus.  What I find most disconcerting is his tortured explanation for donating to Democrat Governor Jim Doyle.

On March 9, Hovde told a local TV station that his donation to Doyle was “a total mistake” and that he wanted his money back because Doyle “was a lousy governor.”

Four months later, he couldn’t even remember the mistake.  He complained to the Daily Caller that “they’re hitting me for one $500 check that I gave to a governor of the state back in 2005 that, frankly, I can’t even remember.”

Finally, just several days after failing to remember the donation that he once deemed a mistake, Hovde told a local radio host Charlie Sykes (starting at the 15:30 mark) that “Yes, I made a contribution back in 2005…probably done because of being hit up and strong-armed by Doyle…one year I capitulated.”

What??!!

Who are these Democrats that are strong-arming him?  And how do we know that these same hooligans won’t strong-arm him into supporting things like…bailouts, green energy, and stimulus.  This is not the sort of courage that we would expect from a self-described outsider who wants to crusade against the ways of Washington.

With Mark Neumann surging in the polls, we don’t need to settle anymore.  Yes, I’ll take a man with a tortured memory or even Tommy Thompson over Tammy Baldwin.  Fortunately, we have 6 days to ensure that we won’t be forced to make that choice in November.

It’s clear that Neumann cannot inspire grassroots Conservatives with his negative image, while Hovde is just confused and inexperienced.

Tommy Thompson, on the other hand, has a proven record of reforming government to make it work for the people of Wisconsin. School choice and welfare-to-work, and the chance to defeat big government liberal Tammy Baldwin.

As I said yesterday, Hovde owns Hovde’s properties, a real estate company that purchases, develops, and manages real estate properties in and around Madison.

Its headquarters are one block away from the State Capitol, and two block away from my apartment. His company works one-and-one with both state and local government in regards to all manners of zoning, licensing, rental laws/codes and you name it day to day operations. Dealing with the government and the Governor is hard to avoid, impossible to avoid when you’re living in downtown Madison.

Strong-armed by Doyle. Yes, Dan, Hovde and ALL of us were strong-armed by Doyle. Apparently you haven’t ever lived in Wisconsin or know the slightest about Wisconsin politics, Dan.

Doyle ran Wisconsin state government like a heavy-handed dictator. His 2009-2011 budget was one of the most egregious, most all out socialist budgets in the entire nation that year and Doyle shoved it down our throats with glee. That was Doyle’s style of management.

The most notorious was Doyle’s DNR. These guys persecuted small business owners, developers, landowners and anyone within 1000 feet of a lake. Every single job creator was Public Enemy #1 in Doyle’s DNR – Can you imagine, oh let’s say, own a real estate company that is sandwiched on a isthmus between two stinking lakes?

Hovde is a business man. His priorities are succeeding in business. One does not do that if one is being targeted by his state government. Giving $500 stinking bucks was the price Hovde had to pay to get Doyle and his cronies off his back.

about this post that I can just not quite put my finger on what the smell is.

Reminds of a farm, farm animals, more to the point, farm animals of the bovine making. Seems to me I have smelled this smell before, but I just can not quite come up with what it is.

Can someone help me name the smell and in turn it will be the right word to describe the above nonsense.

“Giving $500 stinking bucks was the price Hovde had to pay to get Doyle and his cronies off his back”.

      Sounds like a bribe.

Yeah, that’ the kind of politician I want in Government.

(and do you have proof that is the way Doyle ran Goverment)

      • Freiheit (ZachV)

It was Doyle’s grease. Nothing got done in the State of Wisconsin without someone giving a donation to the Doyle campaign. In his entire eight years, there probably wasn’t a single transportation contract was awarded in Wisconsin that didn’t have an accompanying donation to Jim Doyle.

(and do you have proof that is the way Doyle ran Goverment)

Ask any informed conservative Wisconsinite. Mark Belling if you know him. I don’t know how many countless stories I’ve listened to about Doyle’s DNR or cronies yet again screwing another business.

          I’ll just ask for links.

Or do you subscribe to the ‘Harry Ried’ school of thought.

          See here.

Folks can certainly decide for themselves whether or not Hovde’s donations bother them, but as a voter, it’s something I’d want to know about my candidate.

” you have proof that is the way Doyle ran Goverment”

Funny thing … a guy called me last month, cant give you his name, and told me Doyle was a pay-for-play governor.
He also told me Harry Reid was corrupt and tied to the Vegas mob. It’s been making the rounds.

I dunno. I guess if Doyle wants to prove his innocence …

        • gekster

          Do you have any links.

I’m just trying to get educated on the subject.

And as with anything you say, I always take it with a barral of salt.

Who else would you like to defend? Chris “Larceny” Larson? Mark Pocan? Little Boy Weishan? Kathleen Falk? Jeff Wood? Graeme Zielinski?

Knowing that Doyle was pay to play is about as obvious and well known as how toxic to business the Obama administration is.

But, hey, apparently Texans like yourself can’t rub your whole two brain cells together and Google the damn thing.

          • PowerToThePeople

for stating a democrat was corrupt and had you ended the conversation there, you would have been congratulated on your insight.

What you are being mocked for is your silly excuse as to what a so called conservative did what he did including why he donated $500 to the dems campaign.

Maybe you should rub two cells together and figure out the difference.

… about how national conservatives are not understanding that “Neumann = conservative, Hovde = moderate” isn’t true.

Neumann a conservative, you are putting words in my mouth. In fact, just for the record, I do not like either. To me, this race is another Sharon Angle type race where you are choosing between bad and worse and then the dem ends up winning.

I simply stated that your excuse for Hovde and his donations does not hold water and is laughable. You should be at least somewhat smart as you are in a decent university so you should know what you stated is moronic.

  • Freiheit (ZachV)

Why aren’t we talking about Mark Neumann’s threat to kill the Republican’s chance to win the 2010 Governorship by running as an independent? Or the billion other instances of Mark Neumann being a liar?

?Mark Neumann, you have already destroyed your credibility amongst conservatives and active informed Republicans. You have become a laughing stock among my conservative friends. Like our gaff-prone VP, Joe Biden, so much of what you say, is a demonstrable lie. With each proven falsehood, you look more and more foolish? instead of Sarah Palin saying to Biden, ?Oh Joe, there you go again,? the rest of Wisconsin is saying, Oh Mark Neumann, there you go again??

How fast things change when you get out-of-state money and couple of out out-of-state conservatives, who know little about Wisconsin politics, to make an endorsement.

  • Change Jar Conservative

that may lead to a candidate who cannot win.

Hovde gave 500x more money to Republicans.

    He is self-funding.

    He has business instincts.

Two things: Neumann isn’t as conservative as people seem to think he is and he has already tried to win in a statewide race and failed.

My first point: he isn’t a conservative tax cutting hero. PolitiFact Wisconsin posted an article yesterday that showed while Neumann claims he has never voted for a tax increase, he has. In just two bills Neumann supported, they increased taxes by $130 billion. They rated his claim of never voting for a tax increase as FALSE.

Along the same lines, remember that stimulus bill that we conservatives were strongly opposed? Well, Mark Neumann didn’t seem so opposed to it. His companies received over $650,000 in stimulus money and his company SunVest Solar (which he is listed as the owner) lobbied Nancy Pelosi for more.

My second point is that he has already tried and failed in running for statewide office. Voters in Wisconsin aren’t going to easily forget how he viciously attacked Scott Walker just two years ago. Plus, he’s already tried for U.S. Senate and lost in 1998.

We can’t afford to have that happen again. We are so close to winning back the Senate to put our hopes in Neumann.

  • joyceking

Ok, logically, if I’m weighing the evidence to discern who is the better candidate:

I don’t think Hovde giving a $500 donation to appease someone who could have made it virtually impossible for him to do ANYTHING positive for the people of Wisconsin somehow means that he is more likely to be “strong armed” into “bailouts, green energy, or stimulus”.

If he was going to vote for those things, he wouldn’t need to appease him with a donation. And he certainly didn’t compromise his conservative values with his votes then- actions speak louder than unwarranted accusations. Neumann didn’t have to buy their affection, he won it by VOTING WITH THEM.

Forgive me if I’m being irrational here, but you’re telling us we should be more concerned about Hovde taking stimulus money based on a weak, thrown together correlation between two decisions that don’t have anything to do with each other, rather than be concerned about voting for someone whose own company has, -LITERALLY- ALREADY TAKEN OVER HALF A MILLION DOLLARS IN STIMULUS MONEY?!
