The Debt Ceiling Deal One Year Later

By: Daniel Horowitz (Diary)  |  July 25th at 03:44 PM  |

As we approach the 1-year anniversary of the disastrous debt ceiling deal hatched late last July, it is worthwhile to reflect on what we have gained from that legislation.  On August 1, 2011, the House passed the Budget Control Act with support of 72% of the Republican conference.  The Senate followed suit on August 2, with support of 60% of the Republican conference. Buoyed by | Read More »

Ron DeSantis for Congress in FL-6

By: Daniel Horowitz (Diary)  |  June 18th at 12:03 PM  |

Editor’s note: Here is my latest endorsement on behalf of The Madison Project Florida has been shaken up by redistricting more than most states, leaving behind a number of open and newly drawn districts.  While the state sports a large Republican delegation of 19, only a few of them are conservative.  This year provides us with an opportunity to invigorate the delegation with some bold-colored | Read More »

Charting a Path To Reauthorizing Free Markets and Ending Statism

By: Daniel Horowitz (Diary)  |  May 17th at 12:44 PM  |

When it comes to free-market fiscal policy, Republicans are always manufacturing excuses to exempt themselves from their own doctrine on numerous issues.  There are always excuses why specific industries must be recipients of government interventions.  They say that exporters cannot function without the Ex-Im Bank; farmers cannot subsist without government welfare despite record high prices; the financial markets cannot survive without bailouts.  The latest exception | Read More »

It’s Game Time in Indiana and North Carolina

By: Daniel Horowitz (Diary)  |  May 7th at 10:45 AM  |

The presidential primary is ostensibly over, but there are still many primary elections taking place that should be of interest to conservatives.  We often find ourselves bemoaning the lack of conservative members in Congress during the legislative session.  Well, it is during primary season that we have the opportunity to shape the orientation of Congress.  On Tuesday, Indiana and North Carolina will be holding primaries.  | Read More »

Eric Cantor Tries to Stop Stalwart Scott Keadle in NC-8

By: Daniel Horowitz (Diary)  |  April 27th at 10:40 AM  |

This has been a tough week for conservatives in Washington.  Republicans in both houses are caving on the postal bailout, highway bill, appropriations, Ex-Im Bank, Violence Against Women Act, and the student loan bailout.  It’s not going to get easier when they come back from recess in May.  This is why we need game-changers like Scott Keadle in Congress.  Keadle is running in NC-8, the | Read More »

Mark Meadows for Congress in NC-11

By: Daniel Horowitz (Diary)  |  April 16th at 01:01 PM  |

Editor’s note: This is the next endorsement on behalf of The Madison Project PAC in a continuing series of conservative endorsements for the 2012 congressional elections. Earlier this year, Heath Schuler decided that masquerading as a conservative Democrat in the era of Obama and Pelosi had become too cumbersome, and summarily announced his retirement.  This western North Carolina district has become even more Republican after | Read More »

Tom Cotton for Congress in Arkansas District 4

By: Daniel Horowitz (Diary)  |  April 2nd at 10:47 AM  |

Editor’s Note: Tom Cotton has already received the official Red State endorsement.  Here is mine on behalf of The Madison Project PAC. Our problem with elected Republicans in Washington is not just the lack of conservative idealism amongst their ranks.  There are many Republicans who intuitively understand what we must do to shrink the size of government.  The fundamental problem is that there is a | Read More »

Scott Keadle for Congress in NC-8

By: Daniel Horowitz (Diary)  |  March 19th at 04:39 PM  |

Editor’s note: Here is the latest bold endorsement on behalf of The Madison Project. There are few states that will provide conservatives with as many electoral opportunities as North Carolina will this year.  Due to successful Republican redistricting, vulnerable blue dog Democrats, and several retirements, we have an opportunity to elect up to 5 new Republicans. In past years, to the extent that we were | Read More »

All We Want From Our Party is Consistency and Contrast

By: Daniel Horowitz (Diary)  |  March 14th at 12:54 PM  |

When Republicans were completely shut out of power a few years ago, they railed against the absurd policies of Pelosi and Reid and the out of control spending proposed by Obama.  The Tea Party rallied to the cause of freedom and limited government, and helped elect a Republican majority to the House just two years after they were relegated to the ash heap of history. | Read More »

Carl Wimmer is the Winner for UT-4

By: Daniel Horowitz (Diary)  |  February 21st at 08:00 AM  |

Editor’s note: In our continuing effort to spotlight conservative fighters running for Congress, I’m posting some more endorsements from The Madison Project.  Today’s candidate is Carl Wimmer in Utah’s 4th congressional district. Almost every Republican candidate this season will pledge to repeal Obamacare, but none of them have done more to fight the healthcare behemoth than Carl Wimmer.  During his tenure in the Utah House | Read More »

New Debt Limit Brings New Opportunity for Cut, Cap, Balance

By: Daniel Horowitz (Diary)  |  February 20th at 08:14 AM  |

When Republicans agreed to raise the debt ceiling last year, not only did they credit Obama’s credit card by $2.1 trillion, they also gave him a lifeline until after the election.  At the time, it was projected that $2.1 trillion in new debt allowance was sufficient to last until January 2013, sparing Obama the embarrassment of raising the debt ceiling right before the election.  Well, | Read More »

Let the Full House Decide Major Legislation

By: Daniel Horowitz (Diary)  |  January 26th at 01:01 PM  |

We have a legislative process, often referred to as “regular order,” for good reason.  The committee, floor, and conference committee stages of the process are designed to maximize transparency and allow all members of Congress to offer their input on the impending bill. In recent months, there has been a disturbing trend among House leaders to jettison the floor process in the House in favor | Read More »

Congressional Republicans Can and Must Force Obama’s Hand on Keystone Pipeline

By: Daniel Horowitz (Diary)  |  January 23rd at 04:00 PM  |

Immediately prior to the congressional recess in December, Congress passed an inefficacious two-month extension of the Social Security tax cut.  Additionally, they reauthorized another two months of unprecedented long-term unemployment benefits, along with more spending for Medicare ‘doc fix.’  None of it, including the entitlement spending, was paid for in any meaningful way. Nevertheless, you might ask, didn’t we get the Keystone pipeline as part | Read More »

Can a Nonexistent Congress Issue $1.2 Trillion in Debt?

By: Daniel Horowitz (Diary)  |  January 13th at 11:56 AM  |

Pursuant to the Budget Control Act, brought to you by the GOP leadership’s sellout, Obama notified Congress yesterday that the federal debt is approaching the statutory ceiling of $15.194 trillion. [The actual total debt is already $15.237 trillion, but a small amount is not subject to the limit.]  As such, he is calling on Congress to grant him another $1.2 trillion in debt, conveniently enough | Read More »

Oh Yes, It’s in Article 1

By: Daniel Horowitz (Diary)  |  January 10th at 01:31 PM  |

At the beginning of the 112th Congress, as part of an effort to inject more transparency into the legislative process, the House adopted a rule requiring that each bill be accompanied by a Constitutional Authority Statement.  The purpose of the rule was to expose the cavalier attitude of those members who desire to legislate ‘just because they can.’ Well, after a year of legislating under | Read More »

    The IRS as Tax Preparers?

By: Daniel Horowitz (Diary)  |  November 14th at 07:58 AM  |

When conservatives and liberals advocate tax reform they are referring to radically divergent concepts.  Conservatives desire a low, flat, and universal tax code, while liberals desire reform that would result in increased revenues.  The obvious way to achieve that goal is to impose radical redistributive tax increases, such as the ones Obama has recently proposed.  However, there is a more subtle way that is beginning | Read More »

Joe Walsh as the Model for 2012 House Candidates

By: Daniel Horowitz (Diary)  |  October 3rd at 08:12 AM  |

In order to ‘fundamentally restore’ America, we will need to win back the House and Senate in 2012, in addition to the White House.  Yes – you read that correctly.  We don’t control the House yet. There is a popular misconception that all of the 87 freshmen members are intrepid conservatives – members of the “Tea Party Congress.”  Sadly, many of the newbies are ‘business | Read More »

    Obama Lied, AIPAC Died

By: Daniel Horowitz (Diary)  |  May 24th at 08:06 AM  |

At the AIPAC conference on Sunday, Obama continued to propagate his lies and ignorance regarding the history of U.S. foreign policy towards Israel.  Undaunted by recent criticism, Obama doubled down on his demand that Israel return to indefensible borders by creating a contiguous Palestinian state.  As such, he continued to display his ignorance of the geographical reality that a contiguous Hamas-Fatah state bordering Jordan and | Read More »

Congress Can Implement Attrition through Enforcement Illegal Immigration Policy

By: Daniel Horowitz (Diary)  |  November 15th at 02:18 PM  |

The pro open borders advocates in both parties often present the American people with the false choice of amnesty or physically rounding up every last illegal alien.  They assert that deportations are so unpractical and distasteful that the only way to solve the illegal immigration problem is by legalizing them.  Those with some sense of sanity have always realized that the source of the problem | Read More »
