Mitch McConnell Supports Schumer’s Amnesty/Immigration Deform Bill

By: Daniel Horowitz (Diary)  |  May 21st at 03:43 PM  |

It looks like Mitch McConnell’s pass from Chuck Schumer to publicly remain silent on the amnesty bill has expired. While McConnell has come out of the witness protection program to attack the ‘low-hanging fruit’ IRS scandal with alacrity, he has remained silent on the most profound threat to our Republic – the Schumer immigration reform bill.  How can the sitting GOP leader remain silent on | Read More »

    Defund Obamacare Now!

By: Daniel Horowitz (Diary)  |  July 3rd at 06:44 AM  |

The most important legislative goal for conservatives is to fully repeal Obamacare.  If we’ve learned anything from past experiences, it’s that no government entitlement program is ever repealed once the dependency takes root.  Once Obamacare is implemented, any discussion of enacting entitlement reform will be moot.  It will be too late.  That’s why we must act before we run out of time. By now, we | Read More »

The True Meaning of Bipartisanship in Washington

By: Daniel Horowitz (Diary)  |  May 1st at 06:38 AM  |

We are constantly hearing the DC chattering class bemoan the toxic partisanship that is endemic of congressional politics.  These supercilious wizards of smart contend that if we just had a little more bipartisanship in Washington, all of our public policy troubles would dissipate in short order. The reality cannot be more antithetical to this ubiquitous line of thought from the media.  We suffer from a | Read More »

Romney Must Coalesce Around Conservatives, Not Vice Versa

By: Daniel Horowitz (Diary)  |  April 25th at 08:37 AM  |

There is an interesting factoid that was overlooked from last night’s largely pro-forma presidential primaries.  According to University of Minnesota’s Eric Ostermeier, Romney was the first GOP frontrunner who failed to reach 60% in contests “conducted after his last major challenger dropped out of the race.”  Romney won just 56% of the vote in Delaware and 58% in Pennsylvania. Over the past few months, we’ve | Read More »

    Mitch McConnell Does it Again

By: Daniel Horowitz (Diary)  |  April 20th at 10:45 AM  |

There’s got to be some way to create a legislative scorecard on committee votes. Last month, House Republicans almost unanimously passed the “Ryan” budget resolution for FY 2013.  It established the topline discretionary spending level at $1.028 trillion, just $15 billion below last year’s levels and $19 billion below the cap set in the Budget [Out of] Control Act.  To put that in perspective, the | Read More »

    Kimberley Strassel vs.a Republican Majority

By: Daniel Horowitz (Diary)  |  March 16th at 12:30 AM  |

In what’s become a biennial spectacle, supporters of unprincipled Republicans – who often vote with Democrats – are maligning conservatives as “purists” and accusing them of gambling away Republican control of the Senate.  Today, Kimberley Strassel published a column in the WSJ, “Conservatives vs. a Senate Majority,” insinuating that Freedom Works and The Club for Growth are helping elect Democrats to the Senate.  Specifically, she | Read More »

Senate Republicans and Boehner Unite Against Conservatives

By: Daniel Horowitz (Diary)  |  March 7th at 10:45 AM  |

Who needs Democrats when so many Republicans are willing to orchestrate their agenda for them? The Senate is on the precipice of passing Barbara Boxer’s highway bill with overwhelming support.  Mitch McConnell is negotiating a deal with Harry Reid in which Republicans would be granted a vote on some of their choice non-germane amendments.  After Democrats summarily defeat those amendments, Republicans will return the favor | Read More »

Is Harry Reid Really the Most Successful Majority Leader?

By: Daniel Horowitz (Diary)  |  January 3rd at 04:11 PM  |

Yesterday, Roll Call published an article suggesting that Harry Reid has had quite an auspicious year as Majority Leader.  They observe the fact that Reid has won a larger percentage of cloture votes this year than in 2010, even though his caucus has been diminished from 59 senators to 53: Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid managed to win more than half of the filibuster-breaking votes | Read More »

    Charting a Path Forward

By: Daniel Horowitz (Diary)  |  December 23rd at 09:59 AM  |

If the traditional description of the political parties wasn’t evident enough before the payroll tax/UI kerfuffle, it certainly is now: Democrats are evil and Republicans are stupid.  Democrats are evil for insidiously driving up the deficit, perpetuating unemployment, lying about Social Security and passing short-term unworkable Social Security tax holidays for political gain.  Republicans are stupid for a) having Mitch McConnell as Senate Leader and | Read More »

More Problems With Senate Extenders Package

By: Daniel Horowitz (Diary)  |  December 19th at 03:28 PM  |

The Senate-passed payroll tax cut extenders package was already on the ropes with House Republicans over the weekend.  The bill (HR 3630) offers a pathetic two-month extension of the payroll tax cut.  In addition, it extends long-term unemployment benefits for the ninth time, along with the annual Medicare doc fix.  The bill gutted all House-passed reforms to medicare and unemployment insurance, while offsetting the cost | Read More »

House Must Decouple Payroll Tax Cut From Broader ‘Extenders’ Package

By: Daniel Horowitz (Diary)  |  December 18th at 12:05 PM  |

“The Senate action was akin to grounding into a triple play for Team GOP, yet the underlying bill passed with unanimous consent.” Over the weekend, Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans obviated the superior leverage of House Republicans by passing a two-month extension of the payroll tax cut, along with a clean extension (no reforms and offsets) of doc fix and unemployment benefits. Don’t Fall Into Democrats’ Payroll Tax Trap

By: Daniel Horowitz (Diary)  |  November 30th at 06:52 AM  |

As the original 2% payroll tax cut for employees is set to expire next month, Democrats are proposing an even bigger cut.  Earlier this week, they introduced legislation (S.1917) to cut the payroll tax to 3.1 percent for employees, and for employers on the first $5 million of their payroll.  The bill would also eliminate the payroll tax paid by employers for the last quarter | Read More »

Stop Harry Reid’s Egregious Budget Power Grab

By: Daniel Horowitz (Diary)  |  October 26th at 12:02 PM  |

Senate Democrats (and all other Democrats, for that matter) have not passed a budget for over 900 days, yet they are planning to come late to the game and commandeer the appropriations process.  After delaying the process for over two years, Harry Reid, with the help of some Senate Republicans, is planning to expedite appropriations bills in a way that disavows standard procedures of transparency.  | Read More »

9 Reasons to Oppose Boehner 4.0 Debt Deal

By: Daniel Horowitz (Diary)  |  August 1st at 12:01 PM  |

    1) Obama gets his full lifeline, long-term debt limit increase that will take him beyond the election ($2.1-2.4 trillion), without making any transformational concession.  There is no realistic roadmap to entitlement reform; not a single agency or program, domestic or mandatory, will be eliminated; Obamacare is off limits; there will be no balanced budgets, ever.  We will still add trillions more to the debt over | Read More »

    Why We Fight

By: Daniel Horowitz (Diary)  |  July 31st at 07:26 PM  |

Over the past week, the Tea Party has been impugned and maligned with more ferocity than ever before.  Amidst our push to balance the budget, downsize job-killing government agencies and programs, and preserve our AAA credit rating, we have been condemned as extremists, suicidal, and traitors.  Sadly, most of these acrimonious ad hominem attacks were propagated by those who purport to share the aforementioned goals, | Read More »

McConnell Should Appoint DeMint to Finance Committee

By: Daniel Horowitz (Diary)  |  April 28th at 08:29 AM  |

Last week, Nevada Senator John Ensign resigned his seat, creating a vacancy on several Senate committees.  While Congressman Dean Heller will fill Ensign’s Senate seat, a member with more seniority will be appointed to his coveted slot on the Senate Finance Committee.  The Finance Committee is considered a prized “Super-A committee” due to the extent and relevance of its jurisdiction, which includes trade, taxes, Social | Read More »
