What seems to be a foolish boondoggle by Obama may turn out to be a shrewd political move if he stops in on Afghanistan on the way back from Denmark:

Seriously, it’s dangerous there and Obama doesn’t do dangerous. And I can’t remember the last time that Obama made a “shrewd political move” since the election.

Campaigning is all he’s good at and that’s why he went to Copenhagen; they’re just one more crowd that he wants to wow so they’ll elect him. Oh, wait, I meant select Chicago. Same thing. Maybe he’s looking to the financial future and wants to be sure that his Chicago digs could be rented out during the festivities for some big bucks.

In principle, I agree with you. But, even a stopped clock is right two times a day. I just hope an “I told you so” isn’t in our future. Let’s not walk too far out on a limb on this one …

        • janis

Obama is definitely not George W. Bush who went to Iraq when it was a hot war so he could serve Thanksgiving dinner to his troops. Obama wouldn’t do something like that for any amount of money in his coffers, nor for the respect of the troops he claims to care about so much.

Blooch’s point is also a very good one— he’s been avoiding his own general on this very war. Why on earth do you think he’d take the chance of being face to face with him? And if I’m wrong and Obama does this, I’ll say I was wrong, so don’t be worrying about my credibility.

Obama is proving to be much less reliable than a stopped clock. And much less useful as well, at least to the cause of freedom worldwide.

          • blooch

There is no way Obama is going to take a page out of the playbook of the man he is still baliming for all of his problems.

Well, maybe one page; I wouldn’t be surprised if Obama flew triumphantly into O’Hare to proclaim victory before an adoring home crowd. Let’s just hope there are some unNEA-funded guerrilla artists there to hang up a “Mission Accomplished” banner for him. And don’t expect the MSM to carp about how the hard work of preparing for the Olympics has just begun, and this was just an inappropriate propaganda ploy blah, blah, blah…

    • blooch

He’s been avoiding McChrystal like the plague. Face-time with the General is his third-worst nightmare.

His second-worst nightmare is pixxing off the IOC with a provocative trip to a war-zone at such a delicate moment.

His first-worst nightmare is pixxing off Michelle by delaying the arrival of her winter clothes, which she–erm, her retinue– forgot to bring. She’s underdressed and in over her head with the Olympic Bigs. I guarantee you she’s in no mood to fly home alone, and there’s no way she’s going to ride with him on Airbus One to icky Afghanistan.

Ok, you all make very good points. When I saw Gibbs yesterday addressing the Denmark/Olympics issue, though, his smile indicated to me that something else was going on. Maybe that was just that the Olympics were already in the bag.

If Obama misses this opportunity, he would have to be considered the most tone deaf politician on the planet. That certainly won’t surprise me, and it will bode well for 2010.

Glad to see that someone got out ahead of this, and in a prominent place:

“Mr. Obama could show he understands this if he uses his trip to Denmark this week (where he will serve as pitchman for Chicago to get the 2016 Olympics) to make a surprise visit to Afghanistan.”

…to meet with McChrystal; all he has to do is stop off in London, according to a RedState post today.

President Obama, maybe you could talk to your general while you are in Europe

But no, Obama’s priorities are domestic politics and paying off his political allies. Who cares about foreign policy when you’re angling to be President for Life.

to the Chicago machine that made him what he is today. Considering how bad this looks and the amount of heat he’s taken over it, I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s already told Daley et al “OK. We’re even. Don’t come to me for anything else.”

‘an honest politician’ by definition being one that stays bought.

      Good for him…

And good for us… the more days he spends out of Washington the better.

were my first thoughts also… aren’t there more places we can think of and suggest he go to? Now, now, now, I mean places on Earth ;-) lol…. If he did go to Afghanistan, it would be to meet with BIN LADEN to discuss our surrender (Surrender Doctrine) – so I’d rather he NOT go there!

The Chicago machine or Uncle Sam?

  • boxer1017

This is a joke!!!!!! Our racial, spineless President would rather go to Denmark to try to get the Olympics in Chicago then to deal with serious problems such as Health care, the war in Afghanistan, and the economy. The only people who are going to benefit from the Olympics in Chicago are Obama’s thugs friends. The city of Chicago is going bankrupt but i guess we all know where the President’s priorities are.

Chain this man to his desk!

Best article I have seen yet on Obama and his governance problem.. Obama doesn’t get the proper relationship between himself and the people.

    - in the anything/everything is ONLY about him mind-set – it is all about allowing Chicago to CELEBRATE OBAMA on the conclusion of his 2nd Term he thinks he is automatically entitled and pre-ordained to having!!! They’ll then want to build the Obama Presidential Library somewhere on those grounds encompassing part of the Olympic buildings as future reminders to everyone it was OBAMA that brought them there!

      it goes to Rio.

Of course the answer is NO!

All but the most Politically Brain-dead see this for what it is, but unfortunately there are so darn many Politically Brain-dead folks in the US these days. For the first time in my Life, I am DISGUSTED by such a large portion of my fellow Americans!

I have been among many for decades tossing the concept of bringing the Olympics to DETROIT — plenty of worthless empty land to put it on here!!! Unfortunately it would be just another State/Federal DETROIT BAILOUT that would be turned into such a fiasco and LIBERAL FAILURE that has kept anything but a minor Dream…. Further, many of us would like to see the first DUAL CITY DUAL COUNTRY HOSTING with part a joint/cooperation bid of DETROIT MICHIGAN USA AND WINDSOR ONTARIO CANADA hosting an International Olympics with venues on both sides of the Detroit River in both Countries and an Olympic Torch anchored in the River between the 2 Cities/Nations.

Could you imagine if ANY TEXAS city were in contention?!?!? Obama would be lobbying for RIO to get it then!!!

  • Swamp_Yankee

Man, do they hate Glenn Beck. Is this even ethical?
