Pull a Gamecock: GC Recommends that Recommenders post a comment

The Recommended Diary entries section appears random/dysfunctional

Every time I recommend a blog on this Beta-Redstate 3.0, I post a comment alerting the diary writer and the general public. I usually did that on 2.0, but it is imperative that we do it here at the "improved" site since the site does not identify recommenders.

Moreover, there is ZERO stability in the order of the recommended diaries. They jump around from minute to minute or disappear altogether. And since human nature is still 1.0, I suspect either a dysfunction or a heretofore undisclosed new policy diminishing the prominence and importance of user diaries.

So let's pull a Gamecock (see also Jackson) and CROW like a rooster when we recommend a diary. Let's be scores of one men with courage making majorities. Let's vote with a

(fill in your name if you wish) Recommended comment

Mine look like this:

"GC RECOMMENDED"

(With variations depending on the specific circumstance)

And BTW guys, all of our blogs on 2.0 have vanished. Will we get them back and, if so, when?

Again people, don't just hit the recommend button for blogs. Follow up by pulling a Gamecock (as opposed to pulling a Kowalski to reply to your own comment) and writing out a comment alerting the site of your recommendation.

You will not be pecked by the rooster, so have no fears.

  1. As requested, janis recommended....

...and good idea, GC. I usually look at the list of recommenders on a post as it informs me of who it appeals to. A string of left-leaners is like catnip! Seeing a long list of known FredHeads means an article about first principles in some fashion---usually by EPU--- any diary with the user names of Joliphant and moderich attached will be about global warming, etc.

And yours, GC, will always be accompanied by what you requested here as well as some of the quirkiest comments I have ever read ANYWHERE! And good for you.

    1. Thank you, the movement has

RedState 3.0 is a brave new world, but that does not mean we need to abandon old world values of showing appreciation for a diary with our user name as well a a mouse click.

  4. Actually the stability was fixed

    Neil Stevens (link)

Henry at Eagle fixed it last week.

And we'll put in a list of recommenders soon.

So please, let's not put in content-free posts purely for the sake of reinforcing every single recommend we make. Seriously.

    1. ok here we go again - what is "stability"

      gamecock (link)

and to what does it relate in my diary.

And RECOMMENDING is CONTENT. Telling someone we agree is content.

Neil Stevens often does it, in comments.

But you're asking people to do it a lot.

That's bad and I highly discourage it.

            Neil Stevens (link)

The rec list will be back soon. Please just be patient until then.

The actual recommended diaries list works fine. There's no need for right now to worry about who was doing the recommends.

Just ease up. We all have little hardships to adjust to as RS 3 matures. So please just don't push this.

I just emailed you with the same request before I saw this thread so please don't shoot me.

I also mentioned another problem you might not be aware of, namely that I keep popping into other member's diaries when trying to enter my own...We'll manage till you get the bugs worked out.

        2. What's "bad" about telling

          gamecock (link)

someone we agree? You are out of it Neil. Most posts either recommend or disagree. Some people recommend and say nothing and vice versa.

How is it bad to let people know we agree? That a blog is in the recommended list tells no one how many have recommended.

Want to re-thing your statement that what I propose is

          "bad"?

        1. Hey...not true GC...In England

          AceInTX (link)

Hey...not true GC...In England if you want to give the equivalent of the middle finger...you turn the back of your hand to the person you are signaling to and hold up the index and middle finger which should be slightly hooked.

I got in trouble when I first got there in the late 80s when I was ordering fish and chips...the girl behind the counter asked how many fish I wanted with my order...and I said two showing my two fingers...I was treated to a string of curses that ended with "Bloody rude yanks"!

I was told that if you want to signal two in England you extend the two fingers all the way and show the palm side of your hand to avoid sending the wrong signal.

I think GHW Bush got in trouble in Australia in 1992 because he put up two fingers meaning to signal victory as they did in WWII and ended up tiking off the Aussies!

  9. Recommended. And a suggestion (R)

    streetwise (link)

I can understand Neil's point about consuming bandwith with comments that are only informing that the reader has recommended.

OTOH, it is important to know who the recommenders are.

So, a compromise suggestion. If you like a blog enough to comment on it in a substantive way, put (R) in the title to show that, and use the body of the comment for the substantive remarks.

And, going out on a limb here, if you think a comment or blog is damnably objectionable or of the troll variety, put (D)!

    1. Go for it

      Neil Stevens (link)

Certainly no harm in that. It's not slamming the server any :-)

    2. That's all fine, but many people, incl Neil

      gamecock (link)

as he has admitted, often simply write a comment that says

      recommended

Some do it often. Some don't. It can't be regulated. And it is important.

But let me be clear, I am no longer encouraging that everyone that recommends, also write a comment stating same every time per request.

But I have always done this almost every time and will continue to do so.

One reason also is that if you don't make a comment, the blog is not listed in your tracking and so available for alerts to more comments.

The site has problems with the server and much more it appears. I have been saying for weeks that 3.0 was not ready and not any improvement that I could see.

I may be blind, but even a blind man can see that if they think the server can't handle more frequent recco comments of few words, then they have much bigger problems than the latest rooster crowing.

btw, Mike loves Neil. I understand he is stressed. Mike is also stressed in a whining American buying gass and food (or not due to lack of moolah).

      So, I rest.

This just in from Chi-town. Not all gamecocks are created equal:

Fighting roosters, which spar with metal spikes attached to their feet, can be worth as much as $3,000 each, previous busts have shown, while gamblers bet tens of thousands of dollars on fights.

The largest cockfighting bust in Illinois history was made by Will County sheriff's police in 2002 on a farm outside Plainfield.

As many as 1,000 gamecocks were seized in that raid.

They are janis, pilgrim, GordonTaylor, David Hinz, shooflyguy68, streetwise, RottDawg, tadams1138, Oz, and Jake W. Perhaps it's shown in a little different spot, but it's still there.

BTW, just so the editors know, I LOVE the new Redstate. I think all the new features rock, and that's not just sucking up. If I thought it sucked I'd let you know.

        1. I agree on #4, whoopee!

          gamecock (link)

1 could have been incorporated into 2.0 and the best thing about 2.0 could have been transferred to 3.0 and that was

What you saw when the frontpage appeared. Three columns that showed the top story; all top ten diaries and the latest comments, all without a lot of scrolling (which, btw is regressive. The book was an improvement on scrolls!)

Yes, I abhor change and esp change for change's sake. I fear nothing! Except the Braves losing home field advantage in the WS due to three uggla errors!

I don't find it easier to enter posts or blogs; its harder to tell what comments are replying to; new comments are not flagged by color and the tracking is gone (and don't tell me the new tracking feature is as good as 2.0, and yes, I miss the 1.0 tracker).

But man, I will master this 3.0. despite itself!

      2. OK, I'll give you seven

        Leverkuhn (link)

        Here's a list of seven:

        • The new set-up makes it easier to put things in italics and in bold face than it ever was before.

        • It also makes it a whole lot easier to make block quotes, and to make links to your sources.

        • The new set-up makes it easier to put things in lists, like this list I'm doing now.

        • I like that the comments have lines going down to all the response comments, which makes it clear who is responding to who.

        • I like that you can view all of your comments now, which you couldn't do with the old Redstate.

        • The new Redstate also makes it really easy to add tags, which makes categorizing and searching for diaries easier.

        • Finally, and I know this is a tiny issue, but I like that the font on the diary titles is so big. It's easier on my eyes.

"Senator Joe Biden is ... a man so full of cr*p his speeches bear an awful resemblance to twenty minutes of flatulence preceded by 'Good evening ladies and gentlemen,' and followed by 'God bless America.'"

I wish they or you would do a blog on the new features and how to operate them. I didn't know a lot of that. I still lean to the features on the old site and esp the three columns, but that is moot now.

But we must get our old blogs back.

Mike DeVine’s Charlotte Observer columns The Minority Report and The HinzSight Report "The way to stop discrimination on the basis of race is to stop discriminating on the basis of race." - The Chief Justice Race 4 2008 "One man with courage makes a majority." - Andrew Jackson
