Barack Obama is set to speak at the Victory Column in Berlin. The Victory Column commemorates Germany's last military victory over France and Austria in the last 1860's - early 1870's. From that link:
Berlin authorities say that as many as a million people could attend. Four TV stations are broadcasting the entire speech, and the rest are scrambling to secure prime locations at the site.
Originally, the column was in a different location, but Hitler moved it in 1939 to its present location. He too wanted a beautiful stage and backdrop in Berlin. I'll refrain from pointing out the irony here.
Fast forward from 1939 to 2008 and Barack Obama will take the stage at the Victory Column. I'm sure Barack Obama is unperturbed by the military and Nazi history of the Victory Column and only recognizes it as being in U2's video for "Stay (Faraway, So Close!)".
But, okay, I can't help myself, Barack Obama is using propaganda FILMED IN GERMANY MADE POSSIBLE BY THE NAZIS RELOCATING THE FREAKING STATUTE!!!!!!! to woo Americans to vote for him. He's going to have freaking film crews there and the media to make sure the full emotional impact reaches back to the United States.
And why do this in Germany and not the Middle East? Because those rednecks in Pennsylvania and Michigan will not be so tipped off to see a mass of white folks applauding Obama as they would a mass of Arabs. And the rednecks won't be able to tell the Germans from Americans.
So win-win for Obama. But again, I find it both ironic and amusing that Barack Obama is going to Germany and is using Germans in Berlin at a location Hitler himself set up for aesthetic purposes in order to woo American voters.
The man has no shame. He'll say anything and do anything to get himself elected.
-
Oh, and it's even more funny if he really did, as news reports are suggesting, use Hamas/Fatah for security while in Israel.
-
Oh, and you lefties who would point out Kennedy and Reagan at the Brandenburg gate fail to understand history. They were there on substantive matters in relations between the East and West during the Cold War. What purpose does Obama have other than campaigning for office and whipping up the crowd into a frenzy? He is not, after all, an elected world leader. Oh, and then there is the total number of attendees? Only half of Berlin was able to show up for Kennedy and Reagan.

Arrogance

It's no wonder the Europeans see Americans as arrogant and self absorbed when they see this man acting like he is the president of the US when he is a junior senator with little to no experience with the world affairs and US affairs for that matter. He only dealt with Chicago and that makes him presidential? If we had a world government Obama would be the messiah to them but to the United States he will defeat what this great country has fought for, Freedom. Under Obama rule he will decide what is best for all of us and make us live with less and make us dependent on government. He will also take from the people who have worked for their gains and give it to the people who have not. Exactly what Hugo Chavez has done.

I'm wondering how well Obama's talk will go over, though, considering the crowd is not primarily English-speakers. Plenty of Europeans know English, but rhetorical flourishes that send tinges up people's legs here in the states just won't translate as well into German, IMHO...
I wonder if they'll have the German equivalent of an "Applause" sign...

Liberal fascism?
Hermes July 24th, 2008 at 10:52 a.m. CDT (link)
Once again, the Messiah from Illinois shows the true face of modern leftism: unreconstructed 1930's Bolshevism. Let's be honest here, folks, Hitler was a LOT closer in his policies and outlook to Stalin than he was to Mussolini or Franco. I think the recent rallying cry amongst some conservatives that the liberals are fascist is quite wrong; let's call them what they are: Bolsheviks.
Obama, in his, I'll be generous and say unintended, homage to Hitler merely demonstrates "Fearless Leader" syndrome. Boris and Natascha would feel right at home working for him; oh, wait, I forgot they already are (see, Reid, Harry and Pelosi, Nancy). This man's sheer arrogance is amazing. Look at his beliefs, his attitudes, his approach to politics: there lies the ghost of Stalin, not Franco.
Barry v. Barry
Hermes July 24th, 2008 at 11:15 a.m. CDT (link)
Obama's obsession with mass crowds (such as his upcoming speech in Denver) is not the mark of a statesman or a professional. It's the mark of a megalomaniac. Again, cue Stalin reference.
This reminds me, on a much smaller scale, of Barry Sanders. Unlike just about every other high profile skill-position player, Sanders was never a glory-hound. Even when he made spectacular, highlight-reel plays, he'd just hand the ball to the ref. No spikes, no two-minute celebrations, no cell phones hidden in goal-post padding, etc. Barry Sanders was the consummate professional on the field. Contrast that with another Barry who wouldn't recognize professionalism if it hit him on his already massively enlarged head.

Now that the junior senator from IL has made his stop in Germany, to give his speech to Whom? and Why? Exactly what will the German people hear Harump...Harump.....harump? If they love him the way the media wants us to see then let him gain German citizenship and run for Chancelor. We know his world tour has taken him to new heights, but at what cost? Where is the concern for the American people instead of worrying about what the Europeans think of our government. Let us remind him he aint pres yet!!!!! and he has made no major decisions while in the US senate.

Enough Germanophobia already. Yes, Obama is terrible but just because he is in Berlin doesn't mean he has any connection to the Third Reich.

he's not there as a politician today, just a humble, lovable citizen of the world, who happens to look different than other American politicians who've spoken in Berlin before him.
This is not a politcal rally, after all. It's just a big chat with thousands of his new friends, We're supposed to ratchet back on the comparison to 20th century politicians and just feel the love vibe.

Germanophobia?!?
Freedoms Truth July 24th, 2008 at 6:11 p.m. CDT (link)
Germanophobia - That is a curious deflection and elocuation indeed. So when the left calls Bush "Bushitler" that is Germanophobia?
I don't care about the name-calling either way, but if you cant see the parallels between the (in)famous Nuremberg rally of the 1930s and the cult-mass-appeal staged stadium events for Obama, you're not paying attention.

obama is running for president. the object is to get more votes than the other guy, and one way to get more votes is to show how popular you are, because popularity breeds popularity. so, if his stated objective is to get elected president, and if one way to do that is to show how popular he is, why shouldn't he give his acceptance speech in front of 70,000 people?
what am i missing? should he hold his rallies in front of green screens like mccain, because, i have to say, visually that was inspiring.

Were Obama's acceptance speech in front of the masses merely a pep rally type event to fire up the Dems, I would say, "Over the top, but within the bounds of normal campaign year grandstanding." For our friend, Senator Obama, however, this is far from a small blip on the radar. He LIVES for mass audiences; indeed, he seems to badly dislike small, town-hall sytle meetings. Most of Obama's appeal comes strictly from mass psychology (or the psychological drives of crowds). You have pointed out this phenomena in your question. Obama, like all good megalomaniacs, entirely depends on the approval of cheering masses. His ego rises and falls on such things. That is hardly the mark of a stateman. A statesman, rather, clings not to public glory but to the idea of having done his country proud. A statesman acts in the interests of his nation, not his own ego. A statesman is a consummate professional. He does not need screaming masses to soothe his ego. Once again, Senator Obama shows that not only is he an egomaniac, but also an unprofessional demagogue and rabble rouser. This country deserves better.
