Alaska Becomes a Little More Red
Republican Dan Sullivan handily won the run-off with Democrat Eric Croft for Anchorage Mayor tonight. The Anchorage Daily News story is here: http://www.adn.com/mayor/story/784846.html
Sullivan succeeds Mark Begich who defeated Sen. Ted Stevens in the November 4, 2008, General Election. Sullivan’s father George Sullivan was mayor of both Fairbanks and Anchorage and was Mayor of Anchorage through the early days of unification of the city and borough of Anchorage into the Municipality of Anchorage and the Pipeline Era growth.
Both Sen. Stevens and Republican Party Chairman Randy Ruedrich were with Sullivan for his victory gathering tonight in an Anchorage hotel, so evidently the good old boys haven’t been totally purged from Alaska politics. Gov. Palin called to offer her congratulations.
Eric Croft, son of former Legislator and gubernatorial candidate, Chancy Croft, was one of the Democrat rising stars, but a failed bid for governor and now a failed bid for Anchorage mayor may be near exhausting his quota of lost elections. Croft is another of that interesting breed of Alaska liberal Democrats who are also NRA Life Members and introduced Alaska’s Carry Unless Prohibited law. Croft joined with Sarah Palin in filing the ethics complaint against Murkowski Administration Attorney General, Gregg Renkes, which led to Renkes’ resignation.
Just another interesting evening in the slowly thawing frozen North.
