Matt Scully is a long time speechwriter for a vast horde of politicians on the right, and he's a very talented one. I had the good fortune to work alongside him at the White House, and wrote a little about him and his relationship with Mike Gerson here.
It's somewhat amusing to me that Matt has been tasked with writing Sarah Palin's convention speech, according to reports on CNN. Matt is a strong vegan, and even wrote an interesting book about the topic of animal rights and morality - which, if you're at all interested in the topic, is well worth a read.
Pairing a tofu-consuming scribe with a famously red meat loving female politician seems to make for an interesting combination. But on the good side, he penned some very good speeches for Fred Thompson, and his first effort for Palin was without a doubt a smashing success.
Sometimes speechwriting demands personality types who are conflicting in order to achieve a truly moving speech, one that reaches out to people from all walks of life. Let's hope that, given Palin's need to smack down the hyenas of the MSM in one fluid act, that Scully has the necessary combination of inspiration and caffeine to present her with an excellent first draft. In the end, though, it's all about the delivery.
