I know this news broke Friday (April, 30th), but for some reason I am just now hearing about this:
“As I have prepared for my campaign, I have been troubled by persistent health problems and have come to the disappointing and sad conclusion that I cannot run for reelection. There are simply too many unresolved issues around my health and my pancreas in particular. As of this morning, my doctors are still undecided about what course to pursue next for my treatments.
“I encouraged (Hernando County) Sheriff Nugent to run because I know him to be a strong conservative who will continue my fight for veterans and seniors. This past week Rich told me he would stand in my place for election to Congress. On Monday I will to ask the Secretary of State to withdraw my name from the ballot.
“As I go forward with my medical treatments, I would continue to ask for your prayers for my family and me.”
Frankly I don’t know who this Richard Nugent person is, but I agree with TampaBay.com and the Orlando Sentinel on this one. This was done in bad taste.
Brown-Waite, a Brooksville Republican, planned to retire due to health concerns, and she wanted him to run in her place, Nugent told the Orlando Sentinel.
By April 24, after long days of consideration and prayer, Nugent said he decided he’d run for her District 5 seat… But it wasn’t until Friday that Brown-Waite, who had an easy time in previous re-election races, announced her surprise plan to retire and leave her seat up for grabs – minutes after the qualifying deadline. She immediately issued a statement expressing her support for Nugent.
The political maneuver brought a stinging rebuke from Nancy Argenziano of Dunnellon, chairwoman of the Florida Public Service Commission and a former state senator who was considering making a bid. She called Brown-Waite’s timing “a slap in the face.”
“If I had known even at 10 this morning, [Friday] I think I would have thrown my hat in,” Argenziano said, citing years of support from District 5 constituents. She said she had been urged by some in the district to run against Brown-Waite, while others suggested she go after the seat when Brown-Waite retired.
Sheriff Nugent, whether he likes it or not, took part in a deception to limit the number of Republicans running for Florida’s 5th seat. Both he and Ginny Brown-Waite lied. Which is why I can’t support a dirty-dealer like Richard Nugent and a betrayer like Ginny Brown-Waite. I am very angry over what happen this weekend.
I can however, and I hope the good people here at RedState.com will agree with me, support Jason Sager (CAN-R-FL-05). He was already in the race to upset Brown-Waite and will now need help in pushing back her hand-picked successor. I also interviewed Jason Sager back in February, so I know this guy is the real deal. This guy is a rock-solid conservative and is no RINO. Please check out his site and drop him a line of support if you can!
