Before I start, I want to say this is in no way trying take advantage of the shooting of Gabrielle Giffords. However in light of the horrific act, I can think of no better way to honor her miraculous survival than to enact something she wanted to get done.
I want to first say that this article started out as rant when I heard she was killed. However since Gabrielle Giffords survived, it has changed for a call to do something positive in her name.
Who Is Gabrielle Giffords
A native of Tucson, Arizona, Giffords is a graduate of Cornell University and Scripps College. Gabrielle Giffords was a small business woman before going into politics. She was president and CEO of El Campo Tire Warehouses, successfully I might add, before she sold it to Goodyear Tire in 2000.
Before being elected to the US House, she was in the Arizona House of Representatives from 2001 until 2003 and the first woman elected to the Arizona State Senate from 2003 until 2005. She was also at one time a Republican!
Giffords is married to U.S. Navy Captain and astronaut Mark E. Kelly.
She is also Arizona’s first Jewish Congresswoman.
5% Reduction Of Congressional Pay
I completely agree with her.
I mean, they already voted on reducing their office and committee budgets by 5%. This is only the next logical step.
This reduction of congressional pay won’t take effect until the 113th Congress because of the 27th Amendment, but I think this is a non-issue. No time like the present.
A Memorial Act
Although named after her, I think the names of those who were wounded and killed should be memorialize in that act.
The heros of that day should also be recognized. Those who subdued the shooter, saving more lives, be included. The police unit who responded and the medical unit who rushed to save Gabrielle Giffords and others, should also be mention.
Something Both Sides Can Get Behind
Again, I am calling for something positive to be done in the wake of this horrific act and should be bipartition in nature. This is something Republicans can get behind, to reduce the budget, while honoring Gabrielle Giffords. Democrats largely supported reducing their office budget by 5%, so I don’t see how they could object to Representative Giffords’ call to reduce their pay as well.
I would like to see congressional pay rolled back to 2000 levels. However Representative Giffords suggested a 5% reduction, so let’s start there.
As of this writing, Gabrielle Giffords is in critical condition. She may yet pass due to her head wound. So my thoughts are with her and the rest of the victims. If you pray, please pray for all of them.
Again, this is just a suggestion to do something positive that everyone could get behind and nothing more. I’m just a citizen with an idea to come together after a horrific act. I also don’t care if a Republican or Democrat writes the draft bill, as long as it gets done.
