I don’t know Daniel Snyder’s email address, so I am making this an open letter:
I am going to go against the grain and agree with President Obama. Change the name…
President Barack Obama says that if he owned the Washington Redskins, he would “think about changing” the team name, wading into the controversy over a football nickname that many people deem offensive to Native Americans.
…To the “DC Tea Party”.
No, this is a perfect idea. The Tea Party was a historical political protest by the Sons of Liberty in Boston against the tax policy of the British government and the East India Company that controlled all the tea imported into the colonies. What better way to protest the Political Correctness crowd than to rename yourself to a historical protest event?
And you don’t really have to change the colors or logo. Think about it: A bunch of drunk white men dressed up like Indians (I refuse to use the PC term Native American) and then raided a ship to destory some tea. They didn’t do it because they hated Indians, but because the Sons of Liberty wanted to show they were Americans not British. They were in fact, dressed up like Mohawk Warriors. You can even rename your mascot the Tea Party Mohawk!
Yes, I am well aware there is already a WashingtonDC Tea Party. This is why I suggested “DC Tea Party” instead. I have always felt that using just “Washington” confused some people into thinking you are from Washington State. If the Tea Party group protests still, you can always buy them out. You know these guys are free-market capitialists, so I’m sure they will be willing to sit down and see what you can offer them.
Once you change the name, you can sit back and watch liberal/progressive heads explode. It would honestly be worth the expense of changing the name of the team in my book.
PS: Or you can just change the name to Washington Mohawks. Keep colors/logo/mascot. If Florida State University can have the Seminoles, you can go with the Mohawks.
