Hillsdale College is establishing a permanent home in Washington, D.C., to give its students a first-hand look at American government. Hillsdale, which operates without any federal or state taxpayer money, is launching the Allan P. Kirby Jr. Center for Constitutional Studies and Citizenship.
Hillsdale President Larry Arnn made the announcement today:
Hillsdale College was founded 164 years ago on the idea that learning is the surest support of liberty. Our College has a long history of serving the nation on the basis of this idea. So while opening a Washington campus is something new, our mission remains unchanged.
The news comes a month after Hillsdale tapped Virginia Thomas as associate vice president of Washington operations. Thomas formerly worked at The Heritage Foundation (my current employer) as director of executive branch relations.
Hillsdale's Washington office will be located in a refurbished building, located at 227 Massachusetts Ave. NE. It is scheduled to open in September 2010.
