Pennsylvania District 3 was held from 1982 to 1994 by Tom Ridge. Phil English held the seat from 1994 until 2008. Phil:
You lost because, as with many Republicans, you lost your way. In your case, though, it was not policies, it was your campaign which was lost.
You lost to a woman, Kathy Dahlkemper, whose single life achievment was being born into a fairly wealthy family. Should we resent her being born into wealth? No, we shouldn’t. What we should do is show why her proposals don’t work
Her entire campaign was copy/pasted from the Obama campaign.
Did you go after her tax policies ? No, instead, you mocked her for saying that $250,000 was the start of middle class incomes (from a top income down perspective). You mocked her for being a millionaire. You talked about her 12 acre estate. Your ads had the tone of class envy. We conservatives are supposed to be the opposite of those who employ class envy.
We are Americans first and conservatives second, Phil. Instead of mocking her for being wealthy, you should have pointed out the the Obama-Dahklkemper tax increases on small business would cost jobs. You should have congratulated her on being a millionaire, and asked her why she, as a millionaire, wanted to pass into law new tax policies which would prevent new small business owners from becoming as successful as her parents were.
You have a lot of good ideas, but if no one knows these ideas, don’t be upset when you lose the election.
Phil, here are specific bills you sponsored, that few knew about, because your campaign did not mention them. I personally got 10 people to vote for you in the week before the election just by getting each to read these bills:
- Repeal of the alternative minimum tax(H.R. 1366)
- Increased exploration for natural gas and shale oil (H.R. 1444)
- The line item veto
There are many more issues on which we agree, but nobody knew about them.
You can run again in 2 years. You can win. All you need to do is be the Phil English we sent to Washington in 1994.
