This has got to make you laugh. John Cornyn (R-TX) is hinting he wants a second term as NRSC Chairman for the Senate Republicans.Seriously.
If Cornyn were to lead the NRSC for another cycle, he would be following in the footsteps of another repeat chairman, Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.), who led the campaign committee during the 1998 and 2000 cycles.
For perspective, in 1998, Mitch McConnell was able to pick up zero seats and in 2000, Mitch McConnell's tenure saw the GOP lose seats in the Senate. Then there is Cornyn's on tenure. He endorsed Charlie Crist in Florida only to now see the very real likelihood of Crist running as an independent. He endorsed Arlen Specter only to see Specter bolt, and then the NRSC made no great secret of trying to find anyone other than Pat Toomey to run.He has weighed in for Jane Norton in Colorado (without endorsing, let me be clear, wink, wink, wink) only to see the grassroots go with Ken Buck. In Indiana, he threw Coats in the ring and Coats cannot even get his primary locked up. The NRA is going to go with Brad Ellsworth in the general should Coats get the nod given Coats's poor record on the second amendment. In Kentucky, Trey Grayson is now out attacking Sarah Palin and attacking Rand Paul for . . . wait for it . . . wanting to fix Medicare and Social Security. The GOP is going to have a good year. We all know. But we should use some real discernment to distinguish between falling into a win and actually working to win. Thus far, everything the NRSC has touched has gone up in flames with the base. But, if the news sends shivers of status quo down your back, you know what you have to do don't you? You have to work for the candidates the NRSC opposes.Chuck DeVore, Danny Tarkanian, Ken Buck, Mike Lee, Marlin Stutzman, Marco Rubio, Rand Paul, and the rest. It really is that easy and only you can make it happen.
