“Each day, as Chairman of the Republican Study Committee, I promise to fight for our conservative principles in the House of Representatives.”
With all due respect sir, your “fight” has all the appearances of one fighting off a charging tank with a BB gun. It’s time to bring out the heavy artillery and put a stop to the Liberal push sweeping across Washington and this nation like a runaway freight train.
Your Conservative colleagues seemed to be AWOL and unwilling to “fight” when the $300 Billion Dollar bailout package for irresponsible mortgage lenders flew through the Senate virtually unchallenged. And all indications are that the House Republicans are ready to wave the white flag when the bill becomes to your chamber floor.
Is this what you mean by “fighting for Conservative principles?”
I’m sorry sir, but I see that as reinforcement of the Liberal view that all our problems can be solved with more money and more regulations. Perhaps I’m getting a bit senile in my old age, but I still cling to the old-fashioned Conservative principles that the free markets – not the government – should sort out these kinds of issues and let the natural, self-correcting mechanisms inherent in any free-market system take hold.
I have to wonder if the outcome of that bailout package – along with Bear Stearns, Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae – would have been any different had this not been an election year. Perhaps you should make copies of Senator McCain’s quote regarding the Iraq war and tape it to the doors of your Republican colleagues: “I’d rather lose an election than lose a war.”
I vaguely recall a time when Conservatives stood for smaller government, and lower spending. What happened? Even during the tenure of a Republican-controlled Congress, spending increased faster than rising gas prices at the pump, funding for the “bridge to nowhere” made it to the President’s desk unchallenged, deficit spending ballooned, and my share of the National Debt has gone off the scale.
You will find millions of Conservative Americans like me who are eager and willing to join that “fight” to defeat the spread of Liberalism. But we must be led by strong, determined Generals who will get out front and show us the way.
And who will lead by example.
