Cuyahoga County Corruption Watch: Indictment storms brewing.

How do you pronounce "Cuyahoga," anyway?

Noted yesterday in diaries, but worth looking at again. It would seem that things are busily boiling over in the Democratic portions of Ohio – and just in time for the November elections, too.

Inquiry in Ohio Could Hurt Obama Vote

CLEVELAND — A federal investigation of Democratic Party leaders in Cuyahoga County could pose problems for Barack Obama’s campaign in Ohio, party insiders and political analysts say.

If the party’s local campaign operation suffers, some Democrats said, it could cost Mr. Obama votes in a Democratic area where he must win overwhelmingly to offset Republican strength elsewhere in the state.

“There’s no question that this is not helpful,” said Peter Lawson Jones, a Democrat who serves on the three-member Cuyahoga County Board of Commissioners with Jimmy Dimora, the chairman of the county Democratic Party, who is at the center of a federal inquiry.

…Well, no question except by the Obama campaign itself, which was quick to assure the New York Times that the state organization that they built to lose Ohio by ten points in the primary would not be damaged by this scandal. The Times neglected to ask whether there was any overlap between said organization and Cuyahoga County Democrats, particularly the ones currently worrying about possible indictments in their future: then again, that particular county went 54/55 Obama in the primary (and imagine how the Edwards people must feel right now!), so no doubt the Paper of Record was feeling delicate about the whole thing.

As to the really important aspects of this… we’re talking OH-10, OH-11, OH-13, and OH-14. OH-10 is Dennis Kuchinich’s seat, and he’s being opposed by Jim Trakas; the incumbent gets weirder and weirder every year, and you never know when constituents will stop finding that funny (says he, whistling past the graveyard). OH-11… well. Maybe somebody can call up Stephen Pekarek’s campaign and tell them to get a website next time. OH-13 is David Sutton trying to unseat Betty Sutton; can’t win if you don’t bloody try. OH-14 is one of ours – Steve LaTourette – but better safe than sorry{*}. Be sure to check to see how all these people feel about the current price of gasoline, particularly the the Democrats: not that I’d ever think to suggest that some of the latter may be needing to factor in the increased costs in their getaway plans…
