As I was mowing my yard this morning, a couple of the neighborhood boys came by and said hello. Cute, innocent, 9 & 7 years of age. As I told them about my time in the Navy, they were enthralled, and at the same time, upset. They then proceeded to tell me why not only the Iraq war is wrong, but all war is wrong. Before they left, the little 7-year old emphatically said he would never join the military, because he didn't want to get killed.
Pondering this, I started to wonder what the future of this country has in store if this is what we are turning out. When I was their age (and I'm fairly young even today), I was into politics, but I also wanted to be a soldier, firefighter, policeman and all that. Almost every single man my age or older wanted to do that. It had nothing to do with wanting to wage war, or hurt people. It was all about being the hero. We grew up on stories of ordinary men doing extraordinary things. Daniel Boone, Abraham Lincoln, Davy Crockett. All of these stories were woven into our consciousness and laid out a beautiful tapestry of the greatness of a nation when its citizens aspired to such, no matter the harm or sacrifice they may bear.
And I sadly realized that these kids are not simply outliers on the edge of childhood; rather, the views they've been taught by their parents and teachers are par for the course. This is what liberalism has wrought for this country.
We have too many conservatives nowadays that are focusing on 100% ideological purity. In focusing on voting in only the perfect, we squander voting in the good as well. We focus on endeavors that we enjoy, as well we should. But, too often, we scoff off jobs like education, saying "They'd never let me make it there anyways, so why bother?" We worry too much about one issue, never stopping to realize that they all integrate into how we live our lives.
As we do this, we lose focus of the true enemy in this fight. Liberals do not look upon the views of these children as an abhorration. Quite the contrary-this is their intended result. They have the viewpoint that it's not evil that needs to be defeated, but rather backwards, misogynistic cultures that need to be defeated. We are such in their eyes, so they seek for us to either be fundamentally changed, or erased from a position of power.
This cannot continue to take place. The incident with these little boys is a portending of what is to come if we continue to allow this to stand. This is our moment, much like the generation of conservatives before us, where we need to 'stand athwart history.' We have been given a country that is blessed beyond the imaginations of any entity in history, save God. We have a legacy of being the shining city on a hill. I'll admit that I'm in the 50% of users at Redstate that have a hard time with the idea of a John McCain as president. I will not allow that to stand in my way of voting for the man, though. If you can't stump for McCain, then vote for him and stump for downticket candidates. This treacherous halt of liberalism needs to stop, and it needs to stop today.
This election is too important to try and 'send a message'. Send it in 2010, and I'll work to send it with you. For today, though, we need you. The enemy has not only been sighted, but have taunted us over the past two years.
Send them the message instead.
