Better to Give than Receive
We’ve all heard the old saying, “It is better to give than receive”. And it indeed is true. But there are millions of Americans who do not believe in it, including president Obama.
In fact no Democrats believe it because they give, give, give only as long as it is Other People’s Money (OPM) they are giving away; and as long as they get a benefit from giving away OPM (a government job, public approval, election to office etc.).
What the old saying really means is that “it is better to give of yourself than to receive.” But ’giving’ to a Democrat is completely contrary to the spirit of real ‘giving’. Here is columnist George Will writing in 2009 about charitable contributions:
Sixteen months ago, Arthur C. Brooks, a professor at Syracuse University, published Who Really Cares: The Surprising Truth About Compassionate Conservatism. The surprise is that liberals are markedly less charitable than conservatives.
If many conservatives are liberals who have been mugged by reality, Brooks, a registered independent, is, as a reviewer of his book said, a social scientist who has been mugged by data. They include these findings:
*Although liberal families’ incomes average 6 percent higher than those of conservative families, conservative-headed households give, on average, 30 percent more to charity than the average liberal-headed household ($1,600 per year vs. $1,227).
*Conservatives also donate more time and give more blood.
*Residents of the states that voted for John Kerry in 2004 gave smaller percentages of their incomes to charity than did residents of states that voted for George Bush.
*Bush carried 24 of the 25 states where charitable giving was above average.
*In the 10 reddest states, in which Bush got more than 60 percent majorities, the average percentage of personal income donated to charity was 3.5. Residents of the bluest states, which gave Bush less than 40 percent, donated just 1.9 percent.
*People who reject the idea that “government has a responsibility to reduce income inequality” give an average of four times more than people who accept that proposition. (end of excerpt)
Meanwhile, a group of… get this… Swedish economists warned the US about deficit spending, i.e., about Democrats giving away more and more of OPM. And remember how even Canadian and German leaders warned Obama to go easy on the spending at the G-20 meeting in Toronto?
Margaret Thatcher, the conservative English prime minister during the Reagan years, said it well. “The only problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of Other People’s Money”.
So what the heck is going on?
Answer: Reality, that’s what. Even the Eurocrat socialists now are turning off the spending spigots after giving away OPM for decades.
Now the White House has publicized a study that shows that federal workers in the US are very pleased with their jobs, salaries, benefits and pensions. And you’d be satisfied too if you had a pencil-pusher job with a much higher salary than anyone comparable in the private sector, along with a benefit and pension plan to be envied even in the good times.
Yet who is paying for these salaries, benefits and pensions?
The taxpayer, that is who. Those jobs are being financed with OPM. You know, the “other people” who are seeing their income sink, their benefits reduced and their pensions disappear in the recession. Meanwhile the Democrats are taking political credit by getting votes from the government workers who are living the only flush lifestyles in America today.
Now a federal judge in Boston has declared the federal Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional, allowing homosexual couples in Massachusetts – where same-sex marriage is legal – to receive the same federal benefits provided to heterosexual couples.
Oh, yippee! Now we are going to see OPM used to pay even more in benefits to even more federal workers! Isn’t the Age of Obama wonderful!
So here’s the deal. Even though…
*Most Americans disagree with homosexuality.
*Most Americans disagree with homosexual marriage.
*Most Americans agree that the federal bureaucracy is bloated and overpaid already.
*Most Americans agree that taxes are too high in order to fund this bureaucracy.
*Most Americans agree that funding this bureaucracy is economically unsustainable.
*Americans know that most homosexuals produce no children, and thus already have a higher standard of living than many people because they have no child-rearing expenses; yet
…most Americans now will have to pay more in taxes for benefits, including increasingly expensive health benefits, for gay couples in which one member works for the federal government.
What does all this add up to?
It is just more ‘taking’ and less ‘giving’.
And who will benefit?
Gays and liberals, that who. Using Other People’s Money to enrich and empower themselves.
Now compare that to the average conservative, who works hard, pays taxes, gives charitably, raises his and her children on their own dime, does not ask anything from the government except for the basics, and often serves selflessly in the military with little or no thanks.
In other words, conservatives focus on truly ‘giving’ and rarely, if ever, ‘taking’. Or taking advantage of a situation, as unionized government workers are doing more and more and more with every passing day. Even as the country is wracked by recession, government employees – who are largely Democrats – are absolutely refusing to give up anything, but only are interested in expanding their power and wealth. They are making no financial concessions until there is absolutely no other option. And often, as in Milwaukee, they are still refusing to make concessions, and many are being fired with the full knowledge that Obama will bail them out with federal money.
So ultimately what is it about narcissist liberals that separates them from us conservatives?
Answer: We give. They take. Period. We conservatives are the real deal, and it is on conservative principles that our great nation was built.
Look at our Founding Fathers whom Obama recently referred to in a July 4 speech as “men of wealth and privilege”.
Notice what he left out – that those men of wealth and privilege risked everything to make a new nation.
Imagine a bunch of welfare cheaters or unionized government workers or college professors risking their jobs and their comforts for a high ideal like freedom.
This is what separates us conservatives from liberals. We never yield to nostalgia, passion, selfishness or emotion, but only adhere to principle. And when the going gets rough, we do not head for the couch. We roll up our sleeves and give of ourselves. And we would not have it any other way.
