Said Ali al-Shihri, terrorist

“I can say without exception or equivocation, that the United States will not torture…We the people will uphold our fundamental values as vigilantly as we protect our security. Once again, America’s moral example must be the bedrock and the beacon of our global leadership. –President Obama, 01/23/2009

Let me introduce you to Said Ali al-Shihri, he is a terrorist and suspected of involvement in the bombing of the U.S. Embassy in Yemen, September 2008. Mr. al-Shihri was released from captivity in Guantanamo Bay in 2007 to Saudi Arabia where he attended a rehabilitation program for former jihadists before resurfacing with Al Qaeda in Yemen. The US Embassy bombing described as “the deadliest and most ambitious attack in years in Yemen” resulted in 16 dead, none were Americans.

After the attack on Wednesday, a little-known Yemeni group that calls itself Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility. Yemeni officials seemed skeptical, however, saying they suspected Al Qaeda’s Yemeni branch, which has become more active over the past year.

This is the same group tied to Said Ali al-Shihri and the increase in terrorism coincides with his release. Perhaps this is mere coincidence or perhaps it is a direct result of his direction. Either way President Obama is now proposing (with the closure of GITMO) the release of approximately 250 Yemeni detainees. But Yeman is our own worst enemy for releasing detainees:

It has areas of the country that are poorly governed and its borders are porous,” said the former official. If the new administration [Obama] is willing to release detainees without demands on the home country, the process can go quickly. But the risk is that some might pose future security threats to America. emph mine.–LINK

Well, President Obama the ball is in your court. Are you going to place America at risk for increased terrorism or not?
