This is primarily a response to Dan McLaughlin’s most excellent “think-piece” as he puts it. Instead of making a most lengthy thread of response with tangents, I thought I would respond with a post.
Let me begin by saying that I believe that Dan and I, as well as the rest of the ANTI-Obama-marxist-socialist-communist-weak-willed-spineless-power-grabbing-lunatics movement (i.e. anyone that loves God, Liberty and/or the American way) are in total agreement. The question isn’t “should we reform the republican party” the question so many are asking is “how?”.
I propose we stop talking about reforming the party and simply start defending freedom as it is required by the Declaration of Independence — “whenever any form of government becomes destructive to these ends, it is the right of the people to alter” their party and their government.
To me Freedom is at the heart of everything going wrong. We need people and representatives who are willing to defend freedom and not an “R” or a “D” or a anything else that comes after the name.
In the cause of freedom I hope that we can do away with labels of “libertarian” or “republican” or any other sort of ideological identification. I hope for this not as a stance that supports “the enemy of my enemy is my friend” type of associations, but rather… a rallying cry for all people who love freedom to join under the banner of freedom, we can work out the synthetic differences later, but for now we have to stop the assault of freedom. This unfortunately means to my libertarian friends that you’re gonna have to step out of your comfort zone and stop acting so fringe that your local republican committee sleeps with fear of you banging on their door at 3 AM with a list of grievances. (maybe once a year that’s ok… but let’s move past the rhetoric, and let’s talk about how we can pressure our representatives to support or fight legislation that is either for or against freedom) I see a whole lot of rhetoric about “getting back to what the founders created”… I indeed believe that the founders understand the practicality of defending an idea and working out synthetic differences later. I hope that republicans and libertarians can accept this for the sake of providence in defending freedom.
The Declaration of Indepence in my view is the battle plan for defending said freedom that is prescribed (SEE: Universal prescriptivism) by the founders of this nation. However I’m not going for the cliche “life, liberty, pursuit of happiness” phrase, rather the stuff that’s around it:
When, in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bonds which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the laws of nature and of nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.
I view that “one people” here circumscribes all who fear the loss of freedom that our founders sacraficed for resulting in our mutual benefit. I also view that “separation” in our current state is not quite necessary to the extent of revolution, but through separation of ideological alignment we may be able to win our freedoms that are being removed currently. Essentially I believe that if our representatives are not representing us, we must separate from them I don’t care if there is a D, R, L, I or otherwise behind the name. I would hope that there are well intended liberals that agree with us on these points. There is more to this issue found in the Declaration of Independence:
That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed. That whenever any form of government becomes destructive to these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety and happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shown that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government, and to provide new guards for their future security. —Such has been the patient sufferance of these colonies;
In my view we do not need to “throw off such government” as I do not beleive we(Americans) have “patiently suffered” like the colonies did. This gets me to my next point. I don’t want to talk about “How to rebuild the party” any more… I think we simply need to “alter” the party as the D-o-I suggests… and I think by alter we all understand that I mean “throw out the elitist self-serving spineless bums”.
I do believe that we as Americans need to WAKE UP and realize how close we are to handing over the greatest Republic and greatest civilization of any generation in the history of the world which is founded in the Constitution of the United States to Power-Hungry Elitist Wolves who walk about in sheep’s clothing. The arguments that “drive-by media” is allowing this to happen unchallenged is non sequitur — meaning It is illogical to separate them from the Power-Hungry Elitist Wolves In Sheeps’ Clothing crowd.
Now don’t get me wrong… I don’t believe in that marxian proletariat/bourgeoisie division nonsense as it seems to me that in the United States the working class even prior to the revolution had the opportunity to dream and become. That’s why we call it the American Dream right?
The point I’m making is that there are many in the role of “representative” that there to gain power, to keep power, and are utilitarian in a “bad way” as in their intent is to destroy freedom to maintain power which means selling out their constituents (I’m looking at you PAL!! and your friends! and others like you!! ad infinitim) and smiling when the press corps take their photos and make excuses for them.
Then there are those that are in the role of “representative” that are either ignorantly following senior representatives playing the game, but may have good intentions and need to be corrected by their constituents or be thrown out!
Of course there are others that are trying or at least trying to convince us they are trying…
Still there is a glimmer of hope coming from a “shining city on a hill” where at least one citizen of this town is well aware of the loss a freedom that is taking place and they are fighting the battle.
It is easy for the redstate crowd to identify and support those that are fighting the battle… I believe the onus that is upon us and upon all freedom loving people (including angry liberals who can see what’s going on) to identify whether or not their representative is willing to fight this battle of freedom, and if they aren’t then “throw the bums out“.
We often hear quotes in the vain of “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” but do we really understand what equality means in light of this phrase?
John Locke talked about these things and is credited with inspiring Jeffereson’s rhetoric. Oddly enough he is as inspiring to american liberalism as he is to american conservatism because both derive many principles from a individualism utilitarian ethos. Where most liberals and conservatives break is specifically on the role of government in protecting these things within specific arguments. I’d suggest that is how we have been able to reconcile as Americans after each political battle.
However, this last election in my view was the end of reconcilation. This last election is a representation of “The Politics of No Quarter“. The liberal elitists in charge lie to their base, and to their opposition and get a pass from the media. There is no reconciliation, no “bi-partisan” this election has turned into their “final push” they think they have won the hearts of the people, and have yet to realize they have won their minds only (as much gain as that might have).
2010-2012 in my view is our only chance at recovering from this awful state we are in. We have to win the minds back and bring the hearts along also… then we can get back to working out the differences, but we can’t when there is no statesman willing to debate honestly.
The Encroachments on Freedom should be the issue… it should be what we are debating with our liberal friends… we should stop the banter on the specific issues, and question the motives of their elected leaders… I feel we should spend our time educating people whether rigth, left or center with the some of the following but not limited to:
- The Obama Administration has not taken one step towards liberty. Neither positive liberty (having the power and resources to act to fulfill one’s own potential, with the ability of citizens to participate in their government), nor negative liberty (freedom from being forcibly prevented from achieving those ends). Where is the promised transparency? Where is the accountability? Why do we accept the blame game? If your representative can’t answer these questions, then you must ask yourself, are they representing you?
- Every move this administration makes is to increase the size of government, Are you o.k. with the re-distribution of your life(autonomous decisions), and pursuit of happiness(opportunity to own property)? Do you really think the government ought to legislate your every decision?
- This administration is weakening our fiscal stability, They will declare victory while destroying our domestic economic strengths and global position, while positioning oppressive programs that disengage the ethos of the American Dream. Don’t give me no sass about the previous administration, what is this administration doing about it? Are you ok with what they’re doing? Does your representative support this administration? If yes are they representing you? If no, what are they doing to oppose this administration, are they representing you?
- This administration has weakened the defenses of this country by promising open talks with Iran, North Korea, Cuba, etc… have the actions of any of these nations shown that open talks are working? What are they talking about? Do you even know? Are you ok with Iran and North Korea testing ballistic missles for accuracy and distance while in the possession of nuclear weapon materials?
- Are you ok with the fact that the media is not reporting to you things like why Pelosi’s remarks are inherently filled with lies that undermine our service officers and our foreign policy strengths?
We could go on… but the basis is…
Freedom is on the decline and is being choked by beauracracy and inflation in both government and economy… and as these go… so does our defense, and our liberty. I hope this clears up the question.
