Building A Winning Health Care Coalition; The Conscience of Pro-Life Democrats
I wondered some time ago if pro-life Democrats could derail the health care bill. It looks they are one of the voting blocks that continues to resisting their marching orders. Here.
If we are to build a winning coalition to defeat this bill, we will need them. A few months ago they penned a passionate letter to Nancy Pelosi demanding the inclusion of language that would exclude publicly funded abortions in any health care bill. You read the text here.
There were nineteen Democrats that signed that letter. They should remain primary targets. The nineteen are:
Reps. Dan Boren (D-OK); Bart Stupak (D-MI); Colin Peterson (D-MN); Tim Holden (D-PA); Travis Childers (D-MS); Lincoln Davis (D-TN); Heath Shuler (D-NC) Solomon Ortiz (D-TX); Mike McIntyre (D-NC); Jerry Costello (D-IL); Gene Taylor (D-MS); James Oberstar (D-MN); Bobby Bright (D-AL); Steve Driehaus (D-OH); Marcy Kaptur (D-OH); Charlie Melancon (D-LA); John Murtha (D-PA); Paul Kanjorski (D-PA); and Kathleen Dahlkemper (D-PA).
Here’s a simple message for pro-life Democrats:
It’s your conscience versus Obama’s insatiable ego. The Democratic Party will go on without universal health care. The Democratic Party will go on without Obama. Obama will tell you otherwise only because it is his ego and his legacy that worries him, not you and certainly not your conscience.
It’s a bad bill. From the public plan to all the unfunded mandates, it’s a bad bill. The voting public can see this. But let you, and only you, wrestle with the decision to support a bill that provides a door for publicly funded abortions. It’s your tax dollars, your debt and your conscience.
Will you be strong armed by machine style coercion? When you are old, will your vote against your conscience haunt you? Or when you are old, will defying Obama haunt you? Which will you regret more? Look into the mirror before you cast your vote.
And for Republican activists, it is we that must educate non-partisan pro-life organizations and faith based civic organizations with influence in the districts of the aforementioned Democrats. We can banter amongst ourselves. But it is they who have the power to mobilize troops with the ability to influence their Representatives. Nonpartisan constituent voices carry a tremendous amount of weight.
Tim Holden’s (D-PA) district includes Hershey and Harrisburg. Is ‘Forty Days for Life’ based out of Harrisburg aware that the health care bill may permit public funding for abortions? They are now. Is ‘Saint Joan of Arc Catholic Church’ based out of Hershey aware that the health care bill may permit public funding for abortions? They are now.
