In the current day and age we live in, politically we live in a damaged landscape. In the wake of the 2008 election, the devastation is fairly extensive in contrast to what we had before the end of the 1960’s. You might be asking yourself what I am talking about in respects to devastation. We all have known for some time that since the days of Walter Cronkite, and his own admission that he slanted the news to match his own particular view point in respects to the Vietnam War, that news reporting has been on its slide into objectively choosing sides ever since. Due to the transformational tide that has shaped news reporting since then, in my opinion our Republic entered one of its greatest points of danger since the civil war.
Abraham Lincoln himself stated that, “America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.”
Thomas Jefferson,in his Second Inaugural Address on March 4th, 1805, stated, “The press, confined to the truth, needs no other legal restraint; the public judgment will correct false reasoning’s and opinions, on a full hearing of all parties; and no other definite line can be drawn between the inestimable liberty of the press and its demoralizing licentiousness.Demoralizing licentiousness? What brought him to say that? After all, licentiousness has a profound meaning.
- Lacking moral discipline or ignoring legal restraint, especially in sexual conduct.
- Having no regard for accepted rules or standards.
Thomas Jefferson knew that as long as the press confined to the truth no other legal restraint is required. If the press did not adhere to the truth, and disregarded the accepted rules or standards of conduct, our nation was in trouble.
Now I must admit that Ronald Reagan himself commented on politics bearing some resemblance to the world’s oldest profession, but even he did not dare say that about the press.
After this election, it’s finally the time to make that comparison, because the press is now in the business of choosing political sides, and they are doing it overtly. However, what implications does that have for us as Conservatives?
I would like to start reminiscing about some past news coverage that is indicative of the point I am trying to make by contrasting it to current political coverage here in America today.
In 1994, when the Republicans took over control of Congress for the first time in 40 years, and America was greeted by “The Gingrich Who Stole Christmas” Time magazine cover.
We were also treated to “Wither on the Vine” news stories about Medicare. Even the New York Times had the decency to explain the Republican side of the story, but notice that they state an opinion that takes the Democrat side of the story? This is called objective news by today’s standards.
In this year’s news coverage during the election cycle we had Sara Palin’s with a devastating rumor and smear machine in overdrive to destroy her standing in the public’s eye. This included her firing of a state trooper for tazering a child, to her using e-mail for personal uses and the account being hacked into for the purpose of exposing this charge. Then there was the Trig Palin being born to her daughter and David Gregory venomously demanding proof of parentage in a press conference. There was even the spoof on Saturday Night Live saying it was due to an incestuous parentage! Of course let us not neglect the wardrobe issue as well. Then finally, there was John McCain being converted into a mean attack dog, instead of the media darling he had been before he won the Republican nomination.
The totally out in the open effort to destroy Sara Palin was unbelievable. Then this was contrasted by the news media openly not covering Mr. Obama’s past. The starkness was total.
Now that Mr. Obama is now our president elect, I can best characterize the news coverage by the majority of the news media by the coined term “an Obamagasm”. This is comparable to Mr. Gorbachov and the “Gorbasm” Rush Limbaugh used to characterize his news coverage.
The sheer joy and elation that is characterizing the election of Mr. Obama in magazine covers when compared to “The Gingrich Who Stole Christmas” is the best way to show the difference in news coverage between Republicans and Democrats today.
So, I have outlined what almost all of you already know. There have been a couple of posts here about putting the bias out of business by buying these network, or news services. In my opinion, this is not to far from the truth about what could be done. However, it is a long term goal I fear, and we also need a more short term plan as well. The balance must be restored if our Republic is to survive in its current constitutional format.
So, what to do about our current news services who now are one and the same with the Democrat National Committee media operation? From a short term perspective we need to take full advantage of the destruction Mr. Obama brought to our current public financing system. If he can benefit from its downfall, there is no reason why we can’t either.
A media arm within the Republican National Committee or a 527 organization needs to be set up for the express purpose of waging a media war against the news media. I am not talking something as crass and tasteless as MoveOn.org and the “General BetrayUs” ad. What I am talking about is the creation of a rapid response media war room. The Main Stream Media no longer has a monopoly. We can fight back. However, it needs to be an organized full time operation.
A perfect example of what I am talking about is what Rush Limbaugh did in the wake of the Spanish language campaign ad that was run by Mr. Obama that lied about Mr. McCain and Mr. Limbaugh in unison. Mr. Limbaugh launched an immediate response on several levels to get the word out about the lie.
This also has to include rapid response to the evening news broadcasts as well. Right after NBC, ABC and CBS run with DNC talking points as the nightly news, a commercial need to be produced and released on cable systems to give our side of the story. It needs to pointedly made known that the news media is to blame for the distortions in those responses.
Unfortunately, we are talking about replicating the Bill Clinton war room to combat our current news reporting organizations. However, that is what needs to be done. The decision needs to be made over how it is done. Should the RNC make this part of their operation, or should it be done by a 527 organization? I also think that no Republican presidential candidate who ever hopes to win election to the office of the president will ever accept public financing again. This needs to taken advantage of as well during the presidential election cycle.
There is one other component to this that may not be so easy to accept in my opinion. We need to gear up a campaign operation to combat the news reporting AFTER an election too. If Sara Palin is ever fortunate enough to be elected President, we will see her get a post election treatment worse, if not similar to what the news media did to Newt Gingrich after the 1994 election. That kind of reporting needs to be fought against just as hard as the election campaign itself. Most importantly, we cannot allow the Main Stream News Media shape our candidates in the public arena again.
This will be hard work, Rush Limbaugh is already actively engaged in this effort However he cannot do it alone. We must do it across the spectrum of media outlets and not just on the radio. The war must be total in its effort, just as the Main Stream News Media’s effort was total this election cycle.
We are faced with being consigned to history’s dust bin and obscurity if we fail in doing something about this problem. However, the fate of the Republican Party is nothing when compared to the fate of our free democratic Republic. It is also at stake too.
