Open Letter to our Republican Senators: Immigration Strategy Notes

Like the Miami Heat full court press the Gang of Eight immigration bill is red hot and being served up right now.

The debate around immigration is framed by the media as economic and political.  As far as the economic implications, we know that we have immigrants working in the US now. From a political standpoint the conservative Republicans will lose if we cannot position this bill as a means to secure constitutionally sound, personally responsible and educated voters, regardless of their ethnicity.

Use the platform to teach, like Lincoln.

We can use this debate to further the cause of liberty and do justice to resolve the issue of “resident aliens.”  I think that we need to co-opt the language of solving the problems with illegal immigration.  Reinforce “legal immigration” and “securing and reconciling citizenship.”  These all mean – border security first.  Why do these terms mean this?  Because I just said they do…

Stop falling into the trap of weak and inflexible language.  We need to pick a phrase and frame that uses many of the same “goals” and “needs” and “problems” that the media and democrats harp on.  Use the same evidence and stories to support our frame of reference.  Pick a few key facts and metrics as social math to use as part of our narrative.  This means compare $16T costs to support the democrats’ plan to over 16X the cost of the Iraq war ~$1T.  Play short vignettes with the numbers.

However, on National Security we lead.

We need to use this bill to secure the border, limit the effects of the drug trafficking and clamp down on drug related crime.  Many of these problems originate from and are focused in southern states but they have national and upper east coast ramifications.  Our porous points of entry in the south are only part of the problem.  Our ports are not secured throughout the country.  We invite threats from terrorists, espionage and international attacks from our enemies.

We must make this about safety and security as well as and alongside the other topics the media wants to promote.  Change the number of people we are talking about from 11M to 15M.  Why?  Because we want to discuss a bigger number that sounds more important to low-information voters.  We want to be for “reconciling” more individuals and their families.  What this really is about is all types of international immigrants, not just those from Mexico, Latin America and South America.  We want to address all immigrants, and we want to direct the conversation to how people come here from across the globe and teach the world about freedom.  I believe that there are freedom loving individuals still DYING to come to our shores.

This country is the last best hope for man.

I want to discuss bigger numbers of people not only because there is more than likely 30M people from Spanish speaking countries current living as “resident aliens” but because we need to formalize a better immigration policy that encourages naturalization and assimilation.

Don’t settle for the scraps off of the democrat overlords table.  Take the fight to them.  You want immigration, we want it more.  We want immigration that produces more freedom-loving Americans who learn English, learn our constitution and love our heritage.

If you want to come to America, let us set up a website that expedites the citizenship process with an online test that is secured by the NSA, because they know security, or another agency.  That sounds tongue in cheek.  I am serious.  I want a website where when “resident aliens” and foreign nationals apply for citizenship they take our citizenship test.

I could see a Republican standing up and reading the oath of citizenship, the pledge of allegiance, and sing our national anthem (with the assistance of Taylor Swift).

Naturalization Oath of Allegiance to the United States of America

“I hereby declare, on oath, that I absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state or sovereignty, of whom or which I have heretofore been a subject or citizen; that I will support and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States of America against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I will bear arms on behalf of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform noncombatant service in the armed forces of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform work of national importance under civilian direction when required by the law; and that I take this obligation freely without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; so help me God.”

Connect the number 15 million people to nearly 2X the population of New York City.

Then we can and will win the issue, embolden our industry and improve our voting population.

I would like us to find a way to get Cornyn amendment-like language into the bill.  Maybe people don’t like John Cornyn personally and want to politically slight him.  Maybe they don’t like his hair.  Maybe he wants credit for an obviously reasonable proposal to secure his vote and support.  He deserves it.  But even without giving it to him, do something with his plan.

As I mentioned above, if necessary to slow this process down we could broaden the scope to include all immigration from all classes of people throughout the world.  This appeals to the multi-culturalist and the industrialist.  It appeal to business men and women who don’t want to limit competition and secure a permanent  under class of low skill low wage workers.  Granted, when you put it that way these people are few and far between.  Practically this is a way to incentivize high tech grads.  This encourages my Indian (Asia) friends and top research and university graduates to stay in our country instead of returning to their nations of birth .  Let’s use this to build a “brain-magnet” alongside our “muscle-magnet” instead of the “brain-drain” in place.  And let’s stop bickering about nonsense playing defensive and start moving the ball, and scoring some points.
