Re: President Obama’s recent news conference in support of funding an extension of unemployment benefits with addtional borrowed moneys.
As you know, the President invited three unemployed Americans to join him at the podium as he pressed for the additional borrowings.
Joining the president at the podium were three unemployed Americans – a former auto dealership parts manager, a former fitness center employee and a former real estate agent – whose government support has run out or is about to expire.
Mr. Obama said maneuvering by Senate Republicans to block extension of unemployment benefits demonstrates, what he called, a lack of faith in the American people. He described as mis-guided the notion that emergency relief would discourage people from looking for jobs.
Here’s my suggestion:
Hold a presser tomorrow. Invite three American famlies. Each one including a husband, wife and three children. They can be employed or not. It doesn’t matter.
Look into the cameras and say the following:
Ladies and gentlemen, we are here today to discuss our nation’s finances. You all know there is a problem.
There are about 307 million Americans. Together, we are responsible for the nation’s government and its finances.
Last year, your government spent $1.42 trillion more than it took in as revenues. That is about $4,600 for each man, woman and child in the country.
For every family of five, it is about $23,000 which was added to our debt balance, which stands now at approximately $13.2 trillion. Every man, woman and child in America is responsible for about $44,000 of the nation’s obligations. A family of five is responsible for $220,000.
The President said this week that we are opposed to extending unemployment payments, but he knows this is incorrect. We are opposed to paying for the extension by putting the cost on our national tab. We have asked him to readjust the nation’s priorities in such a way as to pay for this relief. He has refused.
So we ask you: Are you worried about the amount of money this nation owes? Do you want grown-ups running things in Washington? Do you agree with us that immediate gratification without worrying how things are going to be paid for can cause immense damage to a family, and to a nation?
Then wait for the response.
