If a piece by John Fund in the Wall Street Journal is even remotely accurate, then the Democrats are planning to enact an agenda that is breathtaking in scope and exhibits historic levels of arrogance and disregard for the wishes of the American people.
According to Fund, among the legislation the Democrats are looking to mash through:
1. Card check
2. Tax increases
3. Climate change
4. Ratification of the New Start nuclear treaty
5. Federally mandated universal voter registration system to override state laws
6. A budget resolution to lock in increased agency spending
Some of the quotes from Democrats that lend credence to this fear:
"to those who think [card check] is dead, I say think again." Sen. Tom Harkin
"the lame duck would be the last chance, quite honestly, for the foreseeable future." Rep. Raul Grijalva
""I've got lots of things I want to do" in a lame duck. Sen. Jay Rockefeller
"It could be a huge deal." "We could get the country on a sound long-term fiscal path." Sen. Kent Conrad
And finally this from "a Senate aide" who told Fund "some of the biggest porkers on both sides of the aisle are leaving office this year, and a lame-duck session would be their last hurrah for spending."
This has huge implications for the country. If the Democrats take this path it will inflict long term damage on our system of government. While it has long been common practice for outgoing politicians or parties to do favors for friends as they go out the door, it has NOT been acceptable for major legislation to be enacted.
After the dust settles I suspect cooler heads will prevail and the Democrats who will remain in office after January 3, 2011 will think long and hard about this type of banana republic behavior.
Let us pray that this is so.
