Over the past few months former Governor George Allen has been running what can best be described as a traditional retail campaign to build up the grassroots – much as his opponents have too.
Basically, Allen has been traveling the state, shaking hands, going to meetings, and making his case as to why he warrants a return to the U.S. Senate.
In doing so, Allen still has managed to build up a large lead over his closest Republican competitors and polls neck-and-neck with Tim Kaine – and the General Election campaign still hasn’t effectively begun.
George and Susan Allen are kicking their final leg of their “Send a Message” tour into high gear. The tour began last week and has been building to this final flourish of get out the vote activity as we head into primary day and mark the beginning of the General Election campaign.
For politicos across the state, be prepared to see Allen. Everywhere.
Whether it’s radio, direct mail, email, or in person, Allen is about to embark on a media blitz and an exhaustive schedule that only says one thing: the man wants to serve again in the U.S. Senate and is taking nothing for granted.
And Allen is going to get help too.
Congressman Robert Hurt, Majority Leader Eric Cantor, Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling, Congressman Morgan Griffith, Congressman Bob Goodlatte, and Governor Bob McDonnell have all leant their names and their energy to this effort.
Basically, the plan is for the appearances and the paid media to match up. So, if Allen is going to appear in a region, in all likelihood, there will be emails, direct mail, and radio ads targeting a conservative audience occurring at around the same time. Here's an example of what you can expect to hear:
ANNCR (male): Washington. Pushing the Obama/Kaine agenda, ignoring us. Obamacare, a government takeover of health care. Small businesses strangled by costly regulations. Record debt, debt our children will be forced to pay back. Tuesday June 12th we can send a message to President Obama and his liberal hand-picked party chairman, Tim Kaine.
ANNCR (female): George Allen. As governor, he cut taxes and grew our economy creating 300,000 private sector jobs. In the Senate he was one of only fifteen to vote against the Bridge to Nowhere and sponsored a Balanced Budget Amendment to the Constitution. George Allen’s pro-growth plan: rein in Washington, unleash our energy resources, create jobs. Tuesday, June 12th, send a message to President Obama and Tim Kaine. George Allen, our voice in Washington, not their’s.
GEORGE ALLEN: I’m George Allen, candidate for U.S. Senate, and I approve this message.
ANNCR (male): Paid for by George Allen for U.S. Senate.
Whether it’s Williamsburg, Virginia Beach, Lynchburg, Charlottesville, Richmond, Loudoun, Rockingham, Augusta, or Stafford – Allen is going on a whirlwind tour of the Commonwealth that no other candidate in the primary can match – and should make Tim Kaine very, very nervous.
Allen is proving, once again, that he is the man to catch this election.
Without breaking a sweat, he’s tied with Kaine. Now, he’s about to finish the preliminaries with a flourish and start the main event with the momentum...while Kaine is standing flat-footed.
