((UPDATE)) Lanny Davis: Helen Thomas Should Go

First, it was Ari Fleischer who called for the outser of Helen Thomas. Now Lanny Davis joins him:

Clinton Counsel: Thomas An Anti-Semite

Davis, who served as Clinton’s White House Counsel from 1996-1998 pulled no punches when showing his disaffection for Thomas’ remarks, saying she should be stripped of her White House press pass.

“If she had asked all Blacks to go back to Africa, what would White House Correspondents Association position be as to whether she deserved White House press room credentials — much less a privileged honorary seat?,” Davis asked.

[...]Thomas’ apology did not go far enough, Davis said.

“In my opinion, her apology was not direct and didn’t address the merits of her belief in the stereotype that Jews are aliens in Israel and don’t belong there. She should be at the least suspended from all privileges in the White House press room since bigots don’t merit such privileges. And I believe Hearst should consider a similar suspension of her position as a nationally-syndicated columnist until she owns up to her bigotry and aplogizes (sic) for it,” he said.

Right on, Lanny Davis. However if I were Hearst, I’d still fire Helen Thomas. Things will only get worse for the bigot in the White House press room because Helen Thomas’ speaking agent has resigned as her agent over the comments. I wait the day when the WHCA grows a backbone and eject her from the room entirely. Her place in that press room is a privilege, not a right. I say, good riddance to bad rubbish.

((UPDATE)) The Anti-Defamation League issues the following statement (Via Commentary’s Jennifer Rubin):

Helen Thomas’s statement of regret does not go far enough. Her remarks were outrageous, offensive and inappropriate, especially since she uttered them on a day the White House had set aside to celebrate the extraordinary accomplishments of American Jews during Jewish America Heritage Month.

Her suggestion that Israelis should go back to Poland and Germany is bigoted and shows a profound ignorance of history. We believe Thomas needs to make a more forceful and sincere apology for the pain her remarks have caused.

I still think no apology would make up for what Helen Thomas said. Sure she can apologize all she wants, but she can atone for her racist comments outside the White House press room.
