Mike Haridopolos’ $152K Book Now Available Online

What is the difference between Mike Haridopolos and his book? One is overrated and the other is over priced:

Finally, a few years and $152,000 [in taxpayer money] in the making, Senate President Mike Haridopolos controversial book Florida Legislative History and Processes, is available in e-print. Brevard Community College has put the book online for sale at Amazon.com for $9.99.

The book deal set off a firestorm three years ago when Haridopolos, then a teacher at Brevard Community College, was pushing for budget cuts at the same time he was being paid for the book while it was being written (instead of being paid afterward). When we requested a copy in January, Brevard cited a Gray Robinson legal opinion that said the book wasn’t a public record.

The only way to see the book, said a spokeswoman, was to travel to the college’s Cocoa campus to read the one and only version. The Associated Press went to the Chamber of Secrets, read the book and this week published a story about it prior to the Amazon release.

A U.S. Senate candidate, Haridopolos was instantly embroiled in a new controversy. One paper opined that he had no right to lecture about government waste when he was paid a handsome sum for a book that took three years to publish. Haridopolos advocates blamed fellow Republicans who might challenge him for the post.

Still, the controversy might help book sales.

According to Amazon’s search engine, Haridopolos is a somewhat…. lukewarm commodity, it appears. When you type in HARI, he’s the fourth suggested link beneath “hair dryer, hair dryer in beauty, hair dryer in health and personal care.”

It’s unlikely I will buy this book. I hear it’s god-aweful and it’s already four years too old. I bet you dollars to donuts that this has nothing in it about social media websites like Facebook or Twitter.

Maybe, if I had the money, I’d buy it. If nothing else than to help pay back the $152 boondoggle of a book to the taxpayers. I feel that bad about that fact. But I wouldn’t suggest anyone buy it. From what I’ve heard, it’s juvenile in the reasearch department and completely outdated. It is 175-pages of double spaced dribble, the first 15 of which talks about the 2006 election of “teh awesome” of Charlie Crist. Again, I think it’s over-priced for such an outdated book. But I guess they have to recoupe the taxpayer’s money somehow.

Jim Stratton of the Orlando Sentinel thinks J.K. Rowling needs a new agent because of Haridopolos’ sweet, sweet book deal. I agree. I mean, I am also writing a book. It’s a High Fantasy novel that deals with dragons. I’d be lucky that a publisher would even look at it, not to mention get a $152K up front with a one third of book sales (in which Haridopolos has waved) in what is described as a simple “text book”. What a racket. I’m clearly writing the wrong type of book. Maybe I should write a self-help novel!

Now I’m sure Mike Haridopolos had nothing to do with it not being published for four years. I’ll put that on the shoulders of Brevard Community College for now:

Not looking much better is the school. In fact, one of the funnier parts of the AP story featured the BCC president fumbling to explain why the school had never published the book, going on to say that the school was “attempting to put it online.”

Attempting? It should take an intern a single day to scan the book and put it online.

Of course, the next day it was online. Still, I am not interested in Mike Haridopolos at all. Haridopolos may be good for his district and the Florida Senate. he may be a good Republican and outstanding RPOF member. However I want a conservative (yes, shocking coming from a Moderate Republican) in Florida’s other US Senate seat after 2012.

With that in mind, I support Colonel Mike McCalister, for US Senate. That man has more brains than the entire US Senate right now (not including Marco Rubio). I wish I could have captured all of what McCalister (blasted batteries) had said, because he was just plain cool.
