This is hauntingly beautiful, I think.
A colleague observed that it evokes a “sense of loss.”
I agree. This version should be sung at ball games and other events as we remember the America that once was and that might have been. Perhaps we should sing it for the funeral of each member of the fast-dwindling Greatest Generation, as we seem to bury with them the last vestiges of national pride and virtue.
But this is a pessimism born of living during the Obama regime.
Perhaps instead we should sing the original version with gusto, all the while seeking to restore the nation to the original vision.fa
