Well the NRO crowd have thrown in the towel

The gloom has settled in, next step is acceptance

I’m reminded of watching the 5 stages of grief. The NRO folks are well past bargaining, and are now in the anger stage. Soon they will settle into acceptance.

Oh look! We have more than a few of they same types here.

Here is Andy McCarthy on last night’s debate:

With due respect, I think tonight was a disaster for our side. I’m dumbfounded that no one else seems to think so. Obama did everything he needed to do, McCain did nothing he needed to do. What am I missing?

Now I’m as concerned about the polling as the next guy, but I’m really not sure what was expected out of McCain last night. I guess people expected him to just scream at Obama about being a terrorist sympathizer and watch him get carted out in a straight jacket. It might have made us feel better, but I doubt it would have helped him win.

I do think that the McCain campaign might do a better job keeping the partisan on our side of the aisle a bit more informed about what they are trying to accomplish. At least enough to keep the NRO folks off the ledge. I think part of the problem is that this election cycle, to the frustration of us all (especially NRO), conservatism just isn’t a winning message. McCain is doing what he needs to do to win in this cycle. If there is too much of a headwind, then no one was going to win.

But the campaign is not over, McCain is not so far down in the polls as to require us to jump off the ledge. A single debate performance that doesn’t appeal to those that have already decided to vote for McCain, isn’t going to lose the election. The funny thing about the undecideds is that they aren’t going to be swayed in 28 days by conservative principles. If they could be, they already would have been. But they might be swayed by someone talking about what he is going to do to save someone’s home from foreclosure.

We will see how McCain’s campaign uses the cannon fodder that Obama gave him last night.
