On Foriegn Policy, Rand Paul’s plan is more ‘leading from behind’… Just without the leading part & more ‘behind’…
We've had 6 years of 'non-intervention' in-practice, if not in intent. Do you feel safer?
There are few things more absurd, than watching Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) 87% try to pretend he’s a Republican while simultaneously lambasting the party base for not being more liberal on foreign affairs.
But today’s press reveals just such a thing: Rand ‘daddy’s boy’ Paul claiming that foreign-policy-hawks are water-boys for the Obama agenda….
Because, at the end of the day, Obama’s *practice* of foreign policy has produced the EXACT sort of hands-off/America-is-just-another-nation environment that the Pauls champion. We let Assad stay in power in Syria (even after he used WMD on civillians)… We watched the Iranians crush a popular uprising, with little more than some finger-wagging… And we responded to an Islamist rampage in Africa with… Twitter comments! And of course, we are sitting down & negotiating with Iran as if they are a legitimate 1st-world nation state rather than a homicidal death-cult pretending to be a government.
Now, this is not to say that Obama believes in non-intervention. But intent & principles are irrelevant, what happens in-practice is all that matters – Obama may be a die-hard internationalist, but he has so completely abdicated America’s role in international affairs, that the result has been a power-vacuum & global chaos. Just like those of us who think the Pauls are cookoo-for-coca-puffs predicted, when Ron was calling for it!
Yes. Rand’s foreign policy IS Obama’s. Just with less espionage (a bad thing) and even more hear-no-evil/see-no-evil/speak-no-evil… Which makes it ironic for him to try and conflate the traditional GOP foreign-policy establishment with the President, while calling for more Obama-style global impotence….
And I think we can all agree that ‘leading from behind’ sucks as a US policy. America was and will be safer, when we lead from the front & treat the savages of the world as, well, savages rather than pretending we can negotiate with them.
And before you say ‘But Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) 44% sucks’… Yes, he’s a RINO squish, yes that does suck. But distaste for Graham & McCain does not require one to adopt Paulist loony-bin foreign policy positions. Nor does refusing to do so make one an Obama supporter.
P.S. If we are all for asking people ‘hard questions’… Someone needs to ask Rand Paul these: (A) If you were President, and you had concrete intelegence that an American Citizen was serving as a senior officer in the armed forces of a hostile foreign nation, actively recruiting for & directing attacks on Americans, and an opportunity to kill this person with an airstrike came up… Would you give the order to engage? (B) Who, in your opinion, owns data that has been collected & stored by private businesses – the business, or the person who’s activities the data describes. (C) What, in your opinion, is the legitimate role of the intelligence/counter-intel community in defending the United States?
P.S. P.S. I wonder if Rand will steal a page from Daddy & try to steal the nomination through local-precinct convention-delegate maneuvering? The GOP needs a process for expelling people from the party (say, forbidding them from using any Republican Party intellectual property), and Rand needs to be the test-case.
