J. Wellington Wimpy, or “Wimpy” of the classic cartoon Popeye, was the gluttonous friend of Popeye who loved hamburgers but was too cheap to pay for them. As Wimpy used to say, “I’m buying; he’s paying.” That seems to be the Democrats’ motto.
January’s fiscal cliff deal was similar to Wimpy’s promise: Give us revenues today and we’ll cut spending later. Republicans caved and agreed to raise taxes; now we are facing Fiscal Cliff II.
The same could be applied to immigration reform; Democrats say: I’ll gladly secure the border on Tuesday for amnesty today. We’ve been down that road before. In 1986 President Reagan signed the Immigration Reform and Control Act, which gave 3 million illegal immigrants amnesty. The law also called for securing the border and penalizing employers for hiring undocumented workers. It didn’t quite work out the way it was planned. Well, blow me down.
When will Republicans learn? Don’t fall for “Wimpy” promises.
Following his tax victory in January, Obama now states that he would be willing to cut spending only if it is done “hand-in-hand with a process of tax reform so that the wealthiest individuals and corporations can’t take advantage of loopholes and deductions that aren’t available to most Americans.” Translation: more new taxes.
Republicans, fresh off of the Fiscal Cliff I tax debacle, insist that more tax revenues are not the answer; spending is the problem. Skyrocketing national debt cannot be addressed by tax increases alone. In a report by Senator Tom Coburn (R-OK), it warns, “Our nation’s $16 trillion debt is the new red menace, posing perhaps a greater threat to our nation than any military adversary.” The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office released a new warning this week as well. According to the CBO, “If current laws remain in place, debt will equal 77 percent of GDP and be on an upward path” by 2023.
Will Republicans stick to their guns this time around? Or will they cave yet again?
And speaking of guns, both President Obama and Democrat Senator Diane Feinstein (D-CA) are pushing for a ban on guns and ammo that would do nothing to stop violence but would limit law-abiding American citizens’ 2nd Amendment rights.
Whether it be taxes, secure borders, or the 2nd Amendment, don’t fall for “Wimpy” Democrat promises. Call your Congressman and Senators and ask them to draw a line in the sand. When you call them, you can quote Popeye. As he liked to say: “That’s all I can stand, I can’t stands no more.”
