Rep. Darrell Issa(R-CA) May Call For A Special Prosecutor To Investigate White House
Republican Congressman Darrell Issa(CA-49) wants the White House to answer claims Joe Sestak has made. Rep. Joe Sestak(D-PA) claimed in a February radio interview that the White House offered him a federal job if he dropped out of the Pennsylvania Senate race.
“I’m not going to say who or how and what was offered,” Sestak said in an interview. “I don’t feel it’s appropriate to go beyond what I said,” because the conversation was confidential.
Sestak, 58, a retired Navy admiral, has said that some Pennsylvania Democratic leaders have tried to entice him to drop his campaign with promises of support for other offices in the future. He also has said that Sen. Robert Menendez of New Jersey, chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, urged him to run when Specter was still a Republican, then tried to force him out after Specter switched parties.
“He asked me the question, and I had to answer it honestly,” Sestak said of his exchange with Kane. Sestak said he had declined the job offer immediately and added, “The person said, ‘I knew you’d say that.’ “
It’s no secret that leading Democrats are backing Specter, a five-term incumbent who switched from the GOP last spring, soon after providing the critical vote for President Obama’s $787 billion stimulus program.
Jake Sherman of Politico reported that Rep. Issa has sent a letter to the White House seeking answers.
But in a letter to White House general counsel Robert Bauer Wednesday, Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) said that, if Sestak’s allegation is true, administration officials may have violated a federal statute which makes it a crime for a government employee to use his authority “for the purpose of interfering with, or affecting, the nomination or the election of any candidate” for certain offices, including Senate seats.
“While the White House may think this is politics as usual, what is spectacularly unusual is when a candidate — a U.S. congressman no less — freely acknowledges such a proposal,” Issa wrote. “Almost always candidates keep quiet about such deals, and for good reason — they are against the law.”
According to CBS News Rep. Issa is standing firm on his April 5 deadline for the White House to respond. If he receives no response, he will call for a Special Prosecutor.
Issa said that if he doesn’t receive “satisfactory answers” to his letter by its April 5th deadline, “then the next step would be to call for a special prosecutor to investigate.”
He said it is now “a lot easier” for the White House to respond because Gibbs “has the raw information that we asked for.” Asked if he expected his call for a special prosecutor to be answered, Issa said, “I’m a practicing Christian, I have always believed in the redemption of souls.” He said that if the issue generates enough publicity Democrats may feel forced to appoint a prosecutor out of “the fear of the voters.”
I commend Rep. Issa for having the courage to stand up to the Obama political machine. I have my doubts that he will be successful, but this administration needs to be exposed for it’s blatant thugery. I will have my popcorn ready, as this could be fun to watch.
